I was woken up by Chris shaking me awake.
‘Rise and shine sleeping beauty. Today you will learn archery.’ I groaned and looked at him.
‘Am I dreaming?’
‘Not dreaming.’ I got up and punched my pillows.
‘I hate it already.’
‘I’m going to leave and you just do what you do.’ I stuck my tongue out at him. ‘Now now. Put that away.’
‘Screw you.’ I muttered.
‘Bad language alert.’ He said. ‘Come on or I will start playing Neil Diamond.’ That got me out of bed.
‘Fine fine. I’m going. Why archery?’ I turned to looked at him. He was in all black with guns in his pockets and holsters. He pressed a finger to his lips and picked out some back clothes for me.
‘To the death.’ He whispered. ‘There is a large forest and guess what. It is on the Queens land. We will be playing there.’ I nodded. He walked out of the room to leave me to get changed. I got into my black top which was quite tight but then perfect for running and hiding and would not weigh me down. The trousers fitted me like skinny jeans with fingerless gloves and a leather jacket incase it rained. There was also a gun tucked into the jacket pocket. I checked the bullets. They were the bullets that left a bright red mark on you if hit. Everything was black. I also had a belt with some more bullets in them. The best thing was that you can reuse the bullets again because the red spot could only be seen in sunlight and they stuck to you like glue.
I slipped out of the palace and ran straight across the grounds towards where the forest was. I had to go through a small side gate and cross a country lane. There were loads of reporters outside with their cars.
‘YOUR MAJESTY! HOW IS THE BABY?’ One called.
‘I have no baby.’ I called back. I kept pushing through the mass of people and spotted Chris as he poked his head out of a bush nearby.
‘YOUR MAJESTY WHEN IS THE WEDDING?’
‘Your wedding.’ They said it like I was the most stupid person to walk the earth.
‘I have no flipping clue. Ask the planners.’ I walked through another small gate towards to forest. Chris grabbed my hand and dragged me away from the gate. I let the dim light of the forest swallow us up.
‘Do you have the gun?’ I nodded and handed it to him.
‘Good. Pass it here.’ I put it in his hand. When he leaned down to kiss me I put my hand on a gun on his belt behind him. When we drew apart I pulled the gun gently with me. He leveled his gun at my head.
‘You have ten.’ I loaded my gun and pointed it at his head.
‘No you have ten.’ He smirked at me.
‘Battle to the red spot milady?’
‘Why kind sir I would gladly accept.’ He snickered as I darted off into the woods while he started counting up to twenty. I doubled back around and climbed up a large tree I had seen coming in. It had loads of branches and I could easily climb it…
We sneaked back into the grounds through the kitchens and saw Jane was stood there leaning against one of the three large agas we had. There was a dark blue, green and white one. She was talking no let me rephrase flirting with Antonio. He was one of the french americans who worked in the gardens. He was like twenty something and by all the maids accounts of him “muy bonito”.
‘Jane.’ I hissed. She looked around. ‘Jane!’ I hissed again. She caught sight of me and waved. I smacked a hand to my forehead. She dragged me over to Antonio.
‘Antonio. This is Her Majesty the Princess of Ethelburgesa, Taylor Ayers.’ He dropped into a deep bow and kissed my hand.
‘C’est an honor to be in such a presence. Vous êtes très belle.’ Chris coughed gently behind me. I stood beside him. We linked hands.
‘Jane. Can you get me some clothes my grandmother would approve of me wearing. She might just kill me if she saw me.’ Antonio flashed me a smile.
‘I think you look perfect.’ Chris coughed again.
‘I am so rude. Antonio this is my bodyguard.’ Antonio took a step back towards Jane. ‘And if you dare hurt Jane or Mary or any of the maids I will hear about it. After all I am the princess.’
‘With a gun.’ Chris added.
‘With a gun.’ I finished. Antonio walked off in a huff.
‘Fine be that way. See what I care about.’ He stormed off into the gardens.
‘Jane? Jane?’ My grandmother was coming down into the kitchen. Jane threw a terrified glance my way. ‘Jane? Have you seen Taylor. Anthony said she was going for a walk with Christopher.’ Chris and I slipped outside of the door as she walked into the kitchen. I turned and came face to face with Titus. He was glancing from me back to Chris.
‘Did I just walk in on something I should not have done?’ I moved away from Chris.
‘What? Oh no. Not at all.’
‘There is nothing going on between us.’ Chris assured his father.
‘Just between us three you two really do have to start making more things public or something else much more nasty with start circulating.’ I nodded.
‘I’ll will bear that in mind.’ He nodded and then glanced around the corner.
‘I’m going to get you out of here. Taylor. Impromptu summer week away Can you get Mary to get you a nice summery outfit and stuff you need? Christopher can stay like that.’ I nodded.
Once I had all the things I needed Titus dragged Chris and I towards the summer house.
‘Taylor go get changed.’ I nodded again. Mary had grabbed me a dress. It had a white lacy type top with a brown belt and then a light blue skirt part with white dots. It also had a matching ribbon which Mary shoved into my hair.
‘I don’t have the time right now. I need to meet our esteemed Prime Minister so I have been told.’ I said as Chris and I followed Titus.
‘It is not about having time, it’s about making time.’ Titus was running towards the other other Bentley. Yeah. We had loads of cars back then. Grandmother had said that if we have the royal flags on the car then we could park, go and do anything with the car. Thinking back I think she meant don’t scrap it for money.
‘Fine. But I do need to get to the meeting. They might not take it too well if I was sneaking off with my bodyguard and his father.’ Titus started walking backwards so he could face me.
‘He is not your bodyguard really anymore.’ Chris coughed. ‘Well More like boyfriend. Come on lets get you out of here.’ I glanced at Chris who shrugged at my unasked question. We piled into the Bentley with Titus in the front and Chris beside him. I sat in the back looking out of the window. I jumped when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at it.
It was Phoenix.
‘Sup P dawg.’
‘Taylor? Oh thank god. I thought that that physco had killed you.’
‘I saw the article about you and the baby and the wedding. Why am I not invited?’ Chris had turned in his seat.
‘Because it was a joke that went too far. Chris and I are going to sort it out now. How did you get away?’
‘My Uncle had dyslexia. He was one of the first people shot dead. He was staying with us at the time so yeah. Adios Uncle.’
‘Bhoze Mio. I am so sorry. I would offer you a private jet out to the palace where you can all stay for the holidays. But you are probably mourning him.’
‘Oh. Not really. We are got over the shock and pain last week. Mum and Dad just want to get away from the house for sometime.’
‘I’ll call grandmother and get a limo to pick you up and then take a jet over here and then you get a ride to the palace.’
‘Okay. Have fun. Bye.’ She disconnected leaving the car in silence. My phone rang again with a blocked number. I passed it to Chris who accepted the call.
‘Hello this is a private number. How may I help you?’ There was some mumbling from the other end of the phone.
‘One moment please.’ He passed the phone back to me.
‘Taylor? Where are you? You are needed at the palace right now to meet our Prime Minister and the British Prime Minister in Washington.’
‘Is Two coming? He is my bodyguard.’
‘Yes yes. Just get here fast.’
‘Fine. Give me twenty’ I hung up. ‘Titus we have to get back to the palace fast.’ The only problem was that we were now in the Capital city: Balaisbois.
‘Fine get out of the car. Christopher go with her to the palace tours office. I will drive home.’
‘Where were we going?’
‘Your grandmother gave me permission to take you two on holiday. We were just going to my family mansion. Chris got out and opened my door for me. I got out and put on the shoes Mary had grabbed for me. They were the same colour blue as the dress but had an inch or two heal. I rolled my eyes and walked down the street with Chris followed behind me.
‘Why exactly are we going to the police?’ Chris smiled at me.
‘Just walk don’t talk.’
‘I guess you are a poet and you didn’t know it.’
‘Your majesty.’ I put my hands in the air.
‘Fine fine. No seriously why the palace tours office?’ A woman who held a small childs hand walked past me. Then again. Then again until Chris stopped her.
‘Are you okay madam?’ She did looked slightly flustered and kept patting her hair.
‘What? Oh yes yes. I was just wondering is that the princess?’ There goes another pat.
‘Yes it is. Now if you may excuse us.’ He grabbed my arm and guided me away.
We arrived at the palace tours office in one piece. I walked up to the front desk.
‘Um. Please can you get me a trip to the palace in.’ I glanced at the clock. ‘Five minutes?’ He nodded.
‘There is a bus leaving just now. It does cost some.’ He had an american accent which was very mild.
‘Two could I have the card?’ Chris nodded and brought out his royal card.
‘Okay dokey. Two tickets coming up.’
We caught the bus just in time and zipped through the town and up the palace driveway. The guide stood up at the front.
‘Okay chaps. Please stick together and don’t touch anything.’ Everyone stood up and moved into the corridor Chris was the last one to stand up and held out his hand for me. Everyone was stood at the bottom of the steps in a large group as the guide was waiting. Chris waited patiently for me. Once down we ran past the group.
‘Miss. Please stay with the group.’ I completely ignored him and ran towards the limo. My father was waiting beside it. He hugged me.
‘Sorry about your spontaneous holiday. Phoenix rang about the jet. I will send it over after we get back from DC. Christopher you are in the landrover with Barney.’ Chris nodded and walked towards the completely black car. The guide tapped me on the shoulder.
‘Please miss. Stay with the tour. Sorry your majesty.’ He bowed to my father. My father put a hand on my shoulder.
‘This is my daughter the princess. We are off to Washington. Please get off my property.’ The guide shook his head.
‘I have a royal pass.’ He held up the golden card. I looked at it closely. It looked real enough. My father shrugged.
‘I have tabs and eyes all over the palace. Move, touch or take anything and I will take you and your whole tour group to court. Understand.’ The guide nodded and walked off. My father threw me a sheepish grin.
