Taylor Ayers

‘I will be back as soon as possible.’ I nodded.
‘I just don’t want you to leave. But I know you have to.’ He tucked a strand of my wet hair behind my ear.
‘I will be back before you know it.’
‘Pinky promise?’ I asked. I stuck out my pinky.
‘Pinky promise.’ We linked pinkies and shook on it.
Taylor is a normal fifteen year old girl until her father turns her world upside down. With contracts, a relentless psychopathic general and a bodyguard who has many secrets. Will she be the person she is destined to be or will she be a rebel and defy the system her grandmother set out for her? Will she find love in her world which has been thrown in the bin and burned? She has to fight even harder than she did before to attempt to keep her life almost normal.

22. I nearly drop the planet

I nearly drop the planet

My father was looking around with an anxious expression on his face. Uncle Barney was stood behind him patting his arm. Barney pointed at me and they both relaxed. I ran towards my father and he caught me in a hug.

‘I thought you had been shot.’

‘Two and I escaped over the low wall which lead towards the swimming pool.’ I looked around to see Chris stood with his father who was looking relieved. His Akki looked pissed off that he was getting all the attention. She was fussing over her own sons. Lord Baenziger looked quite old next to his wife and her sons.

‘Taylor we are going home now are you coming?’ Father was calling. I ran over to the limo. My shoes squelched with the water. I hesitated before going in. Dad caught my hesitation and smiled at me.

‘Don’t worry. Mother will sort it out if you get the seat messed up.’ I smiled. My mother would have kicked up a stink if I had even gotten a hair out of place.

‘What happened with you? Two just asked for my phone and ipod then pushed me into the water.’ My father sighed.

‘General Mosebush has decided to take a stand. He wants everyone who is different to be sent away. That was a demonstration of his power. I fear people will start to “disappear” and we can’t do anything about it. Once the school term is over Titus and I will take you and the boys back home. Shinji and Takeshi will continue schooling at William James Academy though to keep up appearances.’ I smiled.

‘So these people who disappear what will happen to them?’

‘I don’t know. I expect that they will be killed and then the body burned leaving no evidence. We will need to be a source of light and comfort over the next few months.’ I nodded. That was easy. Look worried; I am because Chris is away from me. Act sympathetic; It’s in my nature, most of the time, 60%, make that 45% no no I am wrong again 0.5% of the time. Be a friend to them go around to peoples houses personally and comfort them.

‘Two is being sent away to be updated lets say on how to protect you even more than he already does. He will be appointed to you again.’

We arrived back home in time to Chris sent to the airport. I shut myself in my room for the rest of the weekend. Chris texted me when he landed and had settled back into training. I really missed him but then Dad said it was all for my own safety.

The time when Chris was away from me was really hard. It took forever for the day until he flew back home.

It was finally the Chris came home at last. I woke up early even though it was Friday and bounced downstairs. Dad and Lord Baenziger were sat with a piece of paper in front of them. They pushed it away when I came close.

‘Taylor. I know I made a large mistake when I tried to get you to marry Louis when I should have seen that you and him are best friends-’

‘Were.’ I interrupted.

‘Louis and I used to be friends. It went balls up when I thought he killed Two.’

‘Right Two. Lord Baenziger and I have discussed this at length for a long time and we have decided that we; It is optional! We would like to enforce a marriage contract with you and Christopher.’ I nearly dropped the planet whoa I wish sorry. The p-l-a-t-e  had got out of the cupboard. The plate I had got out of the cupboard.

‘Like what like of contract?’ I said warily. I had a right to be cautious. Grandmother did try to force be into one with someone who was once my best friend. If that had gone ahead the world would be burning. Louis and I were not meant to be.

‘Well it would a conditional contract to that you can be engaged or married whenever you wish. It has to be your signature and it has to be completely up to you. I can’t force you into anything.’ I smiled.

‘Can I talk to Two about it first?’ They nodded.

‘That is the best bit of the contract. You can take however much time you need.’ I mulled it over for most of the day at school until Two arrived in lunchtime.

Phoenix and I had been around the front of the school and when Mark opened the door for somebody to get out. When he stepped out into the sunlight I just had to leave Phoenix behind under the tree. Chris caught me in the largest hug yet. HIs hair was slightly lighter from all the sun and his skin was darker by just a tad.

‘I have missed you so much!’ He mumbled.

‘Same. It was so hard when people asked me where you were. Jez I was going to kill someone soon enough. Have you heard the news?’ He shook his head.

‘Father said you had something important to tell me.’

‘Oh gods are you pregnant? Who is the father? I am going to kill him!’

‘No. Your father and my father put their thick skulls together and decided to draw up a-’ I paused.

‘A what?’ He said looked down at me confused. We had started walking into the school reception hand in hand.

‘There is an element of Q and A.’ He shrugged.

‘I have no clue.’ I sighed.

‘A betrothal contract.’ He looked outraged.

‘I am going to kill them both. I will take out their intestines and ground them up and feed them to birds and then-’ He muttered darkly.

‘But the best bit is that it is optional, we have to agree, and time within reason, a divorce is allowed and it is flexible.’ He turned to look at me.

‘We? Like us?’ I nodded ‘What do you think?’ He was genuinely serious and not fooling around. I looked down at our linked hands.

‘I am happy either way.’

‘No you aren’t. They taught me a bit about body language.’ I looked up at him.

‘It’s okay. I don’t like betrothal things after what happened with Louis but this one sounds nice. Er’ I added as an after thought Chris smiled at me.

‘I am happy only one way and that is with you. I would tear the world apart if you ever went missing.’ I laughed and tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear.

‘Well then I am signing. Are you.’ He nodded.

‘Now go and see your friend while I sign in.’ I skipped off back to Phoenix.

She was pulling up the grass around her.

‘Who was that?’ She asked curiously.

‘Two. He never died.’ Phoenix shrugged.

‘He really likes you. I could see it in his eyes.’ I smiled at her.

‘Thanks.’ Chris bounced over to me and sat down beside me.

‘So. What are we chatting about over here ladies?’ He asked. His dark hair flopped in front of his eyes. I pushed it back.

‘You need a haircut.’ Phoenix smirked at me.

‘No I don’t. I am trying to have long hair.’

‘Boys don’t have long hair. And anyway it does not suit you.’ Phoenix added. He stuck his tongue out at her.

‘I don’t like your friend.’

‘Screw you she is my friend.’ He ruffled my hair. I laughed and moved away.

‘Nice try. Mary and Jane almost killed me when you took out my hair at that garden party. Ruined the limo that did. Father was fine with it though.’ Phoenix looked confused.

‘Garden Party?’

‘We went to a garden party before Two went away. I went with Father and Uncle Barney and Two came with his father and stepfamily. Guns went off and he pushed me into a pool. Jane almost killed me about that dress. I liked that one as well.’

‘Not like the raspberry ripple dress.’ Chris said. He was mocking this horrible dress which was white with dark purply blue tie dye all over it. It was hideous. You had to wear a corset and at the waist there was layers and layers of netting which made it stand out. It was impossible to walk through doors. No scratch that you could not do anything. I could barely breath and fainted when I wore it. That was in the fitting room. Chris had laughed the whole time and my grandmother had not bought it. We had dubbed it the raspberry ripple dress because it looked like a raspberry ripple ice cream. Phoenix looked confused. She pushed herself off the grass as the bell went.

‘Well as you two chat about dresses the bell has gone.’ Chris jumped up and then lent me his hand to help me up. Phoenix rolled her eyes. I smiled in thanks. We walked back to tutor with our hands linked together.

Chris dropped mine before I walked into the room. He walked in behind me looking stern. I slipped back into my chair. Louis glared at me from across the room. He had lost the right the right to have a bodyguard. Unlike me. Looking back on it Louis can’t have “killed” Chris because the force killed him unless Louis was a part of it as well. Everyone was in this group. Maybe it was a secret service like MI6. That would be cool. I glanced at Chris. He was holding my hand gently under the table but it was more tense like he was drawing comfort. I looked in the direction he was looking. It was not Miss Tomson but somebody else. It was General Mosebush. I glanced back at Chris.

‘He won’t go for you because you are not different.’ He muttered something sounded off about his voice like he hadn’t spoken in a long time. It took me a moment to realise that he was talking in Russian. When General Mosebush wandered over to our side of the classroom. Chris gripped my hand tighter. I gripped his back. I could feel his become slightly sweaty but that did not matter. General Mosebush drew a gun and everyone went silent. Chris held out his other hand. I grabbed his gun from his holster and placed in his outstretched hand. General Mosebush leveled it at Lewis Huddlestones head.

‘You have an allergy. Different. I am sending you to a happy place where you will never be ill.’ He fired the gun. Lewis went limp and the light left his eyes. All the girls started screaming. The general nodded and walked over to me and pointed the gun at my head.

‘Different.’ He clicked a bullet into the chamber but before his short fingers could move to reach the trigger he was on the end of Two’s gun.

‘Fire and I will kill you.’ He was dead serious. General put away his gun and checked the list again. Chris grabbed my hand and stood up.

‘Everyone up and out into corridor. Go and wait outside for your bus to come. Stay together in a large group. Come on Taylor.’ He pulled me out into the corridor. General Mosebush stood in the classroom looking confused Chris leaned down and started whispering in my ear.

‘He has short fingers and so was teased at school also has bad dyslexia. That is why he hates difference. It is a nice thought to rid the world of bullying but it is going too far to kill people off.’ I nodded.

‘Why am I different? I thought I was normal.’ Chris looked at me closely like he was x-raying me.

‘In Ethelburgesa they do an IQ test almost every year. Your father did them and your tests were getting 170 and higher when you were younger.’

‘The average is 90.’ I looked ahead trying not to let what I had been told affect me. Great I was special in another way which everyone would find stupid and make fun of. The tears burned in my eyes.

‘Why me? Why is it always me. I am a princess, high IQ, everyone betrays me, bodyguard,  betrothal. Why goddamn me?’ Chris looked hurt.

‘Well if that is who quickly you dismiss my love for you be that way.’ I realised what I had said. ‘Chris wait. I’m sorry that came out wrong. You are one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I think I love you.’ He kept walking. I took matters into my own hands.

‘Christopher Castiel Balthazar Baenziger you come back here right now!’ He turned to look at me. There was a smile on his lips.

‘Yes Taylor Athena Ayers?’
‘I should not said any of that.’

‘Rewind back four sentences. What did you say?’ I looked at him like he mad.

‘How am I ment to know that?’ He laughed.

‘I love your face when it scrunches up. It is so cute. Anyway for your information you said you thought you loved me.’ Gun shots broke up our moment. More people poured out of the school screaming. General Mosebush was halfway down his very long list.

‘Is that-?’ Chris nodded.

‘That is. Might be best to get you home.’

‘Last day of school tomorrow.’

‘At this rate it does not look like there will be school tomorrow.’ He was already walking away. I followed him.

‘Well this looks like the last day of year ten. Hey I am sixteen tomorrow.’ Chris stopped to look at me.

‘Are you kidding?’

‘No. Why?’

‘I am going to be seventeen tomorrow.’

‘We were destined to be together.’ I said dramatically. Chris laughed.

‘Yeah. You have to get home. I don’t care if it takes forever I am walking you home.’

‘Most girls would love a guy to walk them home.’

‘Seven miles. I can do that. Mark might see us coming and pick us up.’
