18. The Last Dance

I woke up the next morning with a smile on my face. I glanced over at Damon and smile. Damon smiles back at me before getting up and going into the bathroom. I slowly got up out of Damon’s bed, and got dressed in my clothes. I guess I packed more clothes in my bag than I realized, but at least I’ve got clean clothes. When I stood up from my bag, Damon wrapped his arms around my waist.

“Last night was amazing.” Damon whispered in my ear.

“Yeah it was.” I whispered back.

I think that I’m falling for Damon. I hope that I know what I’m doing because this could end badly. I have a feeling that Damon is falling for Elena, but I’m not 100% sure. Damon and Stefan went outside, and I went to sit with Bonnie and Elena so Elena could sign the papers.

“Please sign here and here.” the lawyer said as he handed Elena a pen.

“Okay.” Elena said as she took the pen and signed the papers.

“So this place is all yours? They just gave it to you?” Bonnie asked.

“For now. As sole owner, I’m the only one who can invite a certain type of person in here, if you know what I mean.” Elena said with a smile.

“Your own personal safe house.” Bonnie said.

“That’s the idea.” Elena said.

“Wouldn’t want to clean it.” Bonnie said which made Elena and I laugh.

We walked the lawyer to the door, and when he left Elena thanked him. Stefan and Damon tried to enter, but was stopped by the barrier.

“I’m sorry. I completely forgot. Stefan. Would you like to come inside my house?” Elena asked as she looked at Stefan.

“I would love to. Thank you.” Stefan replied as he entered the house.

“What are we, 12?” Damon asked as he and Elena looked at each other.

“One of us is. If I let you in, do you promise to obey the owner of this house?” Elena asked, and I had to roll my eyes.

Elena is seriously starting to get on my nerves. She thinks that this is all fun and games because everyone is dropping everything to protect her. She may think that I’ll drop everything, but she’s got another thing coming. I don’t mind helping her, but I’m not dropping everything for her.

“No.” Damon replied.

“Seriously, Damon. My way. You promised. I call the shots. No, lies, no secret agendas. Remember?” Elena asked.

“Yes, Elena. Sure.” Damon replied just so he could get inside the house.

“Then please, come in.” Elena said.

Damon walked through the door, and said, “Shut up.” when he looked at Stefan.

I grabbed my backpack, which I brought with me when I brought my overnight bag, and watched as Bonnie gave Elena her jacket.

“Thanks.” Elena said to Bonnie.

“Wait, where are you going?” Stefan asked.

“To school.” Elena replied like it was obvious.

“Huh?” Stefan asked confused.

“No, no, no. We didn’t create a safe house for you to leave it.” Damon said.

“Yeah, guys, Klaus is out there. We know that.” Stefan said trying to convince to stay home.

“Right. But where? No one knows. Look, I really appreciate what you guys are doing. And I’ll be able to sleep at night knowing that I’ll be safe here, but I’m not going to be a prisoner.” Elena said as she looked between Stefan and Damon.

“Your way, Elena.” Damon said.

“Don’t worry, I’m ready. If he shows his face, I can take him, Know how, and I have Ryleigh with me.” Bonnie said with a smile as she looked at me.

“The way I see it, next to Bonnie and Ryleigh is the safest place that I can be. Come on.” Elena said as we headed toward the door.

“Wait, I’m, coming.” Stefan said as he caught up to us.

When we got to school, I got to miss my classes because I was helping set up for the dance that night. I couldn’t wait for the dance because I didn’t get to go to the last dance. I also knew that tonight would be awkward. I decided to take a break and sat next to Elena and Bonnie. We were talking about Jenna and the dance, when Dana came up to us.

“Hey, Elena, there you are. Okay. This is going to sound freaky, but this totally hot guy just asked me to ask you if you’re going to the dance tonight.” Dana said.

“Tell him she has a boyfriend.” Bonnie said back.

“You could at least meet him. He’ll be at the dance tonight. Look for him. His name is Klaus.” Dana said.

Elena, Bonnie, and I shared a look but it went unnoticed by Dana.

“I’m sorry, what did you just say?” Elena asked.

“His name’s Klaus. I know the name’s stupid, but I swear he’s hot.” Dana replied.

Bonnie and I started to look around before she asked, “Where is he? Is he here?”

“I don’t know.” Dana replied confused.

That told the 3 of us exactly what was wrong with her.

“She’s been compelled.” Bonnie said.

“But he wants to know if you’ll save him the last dance. How cute is that?” Dana asked, completely unaware of the looks that Elena, Bonnie, and I were giving each other.

Elena, Bonnie, and I decided that after Dana left, we were going back home to tell Damon and Stefan. I couldn’t believe that Klaus had the nerve to compel someone in public. He must be cocky, if he did that and no one noticed. When we got home, we sat in the living room with Damon and Stefan, and Elena explained what happened at school.

“So we go to the dance, we find him.” Damon said.

“Really? How are we going to do that?  We don’t even know what he looks like.” Stefan said.

“Something tells me he’s not going to be 16 and pimply.” Damon said which made me roll my eyes.

“He could be anywhere at any time. He compelled somebody at school.” Stefan said.

Stefan looked at Bonnie, Elena, and I before saying, “I guess it’s not as safe as you guys thought, huh?”

I was about to say a smartass comment, but there was a knock on the door. Before we knew it, Alaric walked into the room.

“There you are.” Damon said as Alaric walked into the room.

“Sorry I’m late.” Alaric said back.

“Hey, I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move.” Damon said.

I noticed that Alaric was looking at Elena funny. I hope that I’m just imagining it, but you can’t be too careful.

“Okay, so we find him and then what, hmm? What’s our plan of attack?” Elena asked.

“Me. I’m the plan. He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him.” Bonnie replied.

“That’s not going to that easy. I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around.” Alaric said, and I knew right then there was something off with him.

“Alaric has a point. I mean, what if he…” Damon started to say before he rushed at Bonnie.

Bonnie flung Damon across the room without even touching him. I was really impressed with that, and I wonder what else she can do.

“Well, I’m impressed.” Stefan said, confirming my thoughts.

“It doesn’t matter if he’s an Original. I can take down anyone who comes at me. I can kill him, Elena. I know I can.” Bonnie said.

“Bonnie, you know I love you, and if you need any more power, then you can channel me.” I said to my cousin.

“I love you too, Ry. I will only channel you as a last resort.” Bonnie said.

I nodded my head, and hugged her. I knew something was off by the way she said that, but I’m not going to let it bother me until the time is right. A plan was made for the dance, and I headed home to get ready. After I got dressed, I met Elena, Stefan, and Damon and we went to the dance.

“Damon.” Bonnie said as we approached her and Jeremy.

“Evenin’.” Damon said back.

Damon heads on into the school, and Stefan and Elena join us.

“Hey you two. Oh, you look nice.” Elena said before she hugged Bonnie.

“You too.” Bonnie said as she hugged Elena back.

“You guys ready to do this?” Stefan asked.

Bonnie and I hugged as well, and I could tell that she wasn’t herself. After we went in, we were having a ball before Dana went on stage and said that there was a shout out for Elena from Klaus. We all knew that it was to scare us, so we decided to have fun and let Klaus come to us. I was having fun with some of my classmates, when I saw Stefan go after Jeremy. I decided to join them, and I wished I hadn’t.

“Jeremy. What are you doing? Elena thinks we should stick together.” Stefan said as we finally caught up to him.

“Yeah, I’m fine. I’ve got my ring. It’s… it’s Bonnie.” Jeremy replied.

“What is it? Hey, you got something on your mind, spit it out.” Stefan said.

“What’s going on with my cousin, Jeremy? If you know something then please tell us.” I said as I looked at Jeremy.

“If Bonnie takes on Klaus, channeling all that energy’s going to kill her.” Jeremy finally told us.

“What?” Stefan and I both asked.

“But she doesn’t want Elena to know, ‘cause if Elena knows, she’s gonna try to stop her. And it’s Elena that could turn up dead, so… What am I supposed to do?” Jeremy asked.

Stefan and Jeremy both hugged me because I was seriously fixing to have a breakdown. After I finally calmed down, Stefan and I went to find Elena, and then we went to find Bonnie. Bonnie, Elena, and I went outside to talk because Elena and I both want answers.

“How could you not tell me?” Elena asked.

“Yeah, Bonnie, how come you didn’t tell me?” I asked.

“‘Cause I knew how you both would react.” Bonnie replied.

“No. No way, it’s not an option.” Elena said and I nodded my head in agreement.

“It’s our only option.” Bonnie said.

“Then we’ll find another way, okay? Bonnie, you’re not dying to save my life.” Elena said.

“I have the power to save you! If I don’t use it and something happens, that would kill me more.” Bonnie said.

I was starting to see why she didn’t tell us. I also had to agree that if you got the power then you need to use it.

“I can’t let you.” Elena said.

“Just answer one question… if the situation was reversed, would you do it for me?” Bonnie asked.

I knew what my answer was and I think Elena did too because neither one of us said a word.

“So you know why I have to.” Bonnie told us after we kept quiet.

“No. No!” Elena argued.

Before anybody can say anything else, Alaric comes up to us yelling, “Elena!”

“What is it?” Elena asked.

“He has Jeremy.” Alaric replied.

“What?” “What?!” “What?!?” Elena, Bonnie, and I yelled.

“Yeah, Klaus has Jeremy. Come on.” Alaric said as he ushered us into the school.

We’re running through the hallway, when Elena asked, “Okay, so where are you taking us?”

“Just a little further.” Alaric replied.

“Wait… Something’s not right.” Elena said as we started to slow down.

“Where’s Jeremy?” Bonnie asked.

We finally came to a complete stop. I knew something was off too, but I can’t put my finger on it. Alaric then decided to start laughing.

“I just had to get away from that dance. The sixties, ugh. Not my decade.” Alaric finally said.

I knew right then that Alaric wasn’t really Alaric, but Klaus in Alaric’s body, and I didn’t know if I should out him or let him out himself.

“I mean, whose call was that, anyway? I much prefer the twenties. The style, the parties, the jazz.” Alaric said, and that right there proved my thought.

“Alaric. Are you on vervain?” Elena asked.

“Now why would you ask me that question, Elena?” Alaric asked.

“He’s being compelled.” Elena replied to me and Bonnie.

“Nope. Try again.” Alaric said.

“What’s going on?” Elena asked, and I really wanted to smack her because he just basically told her what was going on.

“Okay, I’ll give you hint. I am not Alaric.” Alaric replied with a smirk.

“Klaus.” Elena and I said together.

“Surprise!” Alaric/Klaus said as his smirk grew.

“Oh, no. No, it’s not possible.” Elena said, and I was thinking the same thing.

“Just relax, Elena. I’m not here to hurt you. You’re not on my hit list tonight.” Alaric/Klaus said as he looked at Bonnie.

“But you are.” Alaric/Klaus said as he pointed at Bonnie.

Bonnie threw him into a wall. I was ready to attack as well if he tried to come after us.

“Now, did I mention that I knew a witch? You’re gonna have to hit me a lot harder than that.” Alaric/Klaus said as he got up.

Alaric/Klaus tried to rushes us, but Bonnie and I threw him into a display case. I guess he thought it was funny because when he got up, he was laughing.

“By all means… Fire away!” Alaric/Klaus yelled.

“If you kill this body, I’ll just get a new one. Maybe Jeremy.” Alaric/Klaus said.

“Go. Run. Run!” Bonnie yelled.

We took off, and while we were running, Bonnie and I were shutting the doors behind us. We actually met up with Damon and I was happy to see him.

“What happened?” Damon asked.

“Klaus is in Alaric’s body.” Elena replied.

“What?” Damon asked confused.

“He’s possessing it or something.” Bonnie replied.

Damon turns to Elena and says, “Go find Stefan. Now.”

“Okay.” Elena replies before running off to find Stefan.

“Can you kill him?” Damon asked once Elena was out of sight.

“He’s got some kind of protection spell on him.” Bonnie replied.

“You have the power of a hundred witches. Break it.” Damon growled.

“I’m trying! If I kill Alaric, he’ll just possess someone else. He knows I have my power, Damon. He’s trying to kill me.” Bonnie said.

“No. Klaus does not get to win tonight, no way. You still willing to do whatever it takes to kill him?” Damon asked.

I really didn’t hear anything else that was said between the two of them. I’m glad that did because if I knew what was fixing to happen, then I would’ve tried to stop it. I was pulled from my thoughts when Bonnie pulled me along with her. We finally got to the cafeteria, and I was sort of freaking out.

“What took you so long? Oh look, you brought a friend. Now, do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?” Alaric/Klaus asked as he looked between Bonnie and I.

Bonnie and I broke his wrist, but he just popped in back into place.

“The hard way. Got it.” Alaric/Klaus said with a smirk.

Bonnie and I then break his shoulder. All he did was groan.

“What? You’d kill your favorite history teacher?” Alaric/Klaus asked.

“It’s what Alaric would want. And he’d want you to suffer first.” Bonnie replied.

“Look at you.” Alaric/Klaus said.

I looked at Bonnie and saw that her nose was bleeding. I was shocked that mine wasn’t bleeding, but then again, I’m not using the power of 100 dead witches.

“Is that all you got?” Alaric/Klaus asked.

“Let’s find out.” Bonnie said before nodding to me.

Bonnie and I were fighting Alaric/Klaus, but before I knew it, Bonnie had shoved me outside to Elena and Stefan, and then slammed the door in our face. Elena and I were trying so hard to get in the door. We were finally able to get into the door, when my cousin fell to the ground, dead.

Elena and I were trying to wake Bonnie up, but it was too late. Elena and I were clinging to each other as Damon came into the room, and told Stefan to get us out of there. Stefan finally got us out of there, and when we got home, Elena and I changed clothes and just clung to each other.

Stefan was trying to talk to us, but the only one listening was Elena. I was crushed because Bonnie was my cousin, and no one was going to make me smile unless Bonnie is alive. Damon came in and I was shocked to say that Elena and I had the same idea for smacking him.

“You both need to listen to me, and prepare for what I’m about to say. Bonnie had to die. Klaus using Alaric’s body was a total surprise. She wasn’t prepared for that. And he wasn’t going to stop, and we weren’t going to be able to stop him until he knew she was dead. He had to believe it.” Damon said.

I wanted to smack him again, but then I thought about it, and it made sense. I couldn’t believe that he kept it from us. I’m glad that I at least get to talk to my cousin. Elena and I are sitting in front of a laptop waiting on Jeremy to connect us, and when he did, Elena and I yelled, “Bonnie!”

“Elena, Ryleigh, I’m so sorry.” Bonnie said.

“It’s okay, it’s okay. We just needed to see you for ourselves.” Elena said back, and I nodded my head in agreement.

“There wasn’t enough time for me to tell either of you.” Bonnie said while crying.

“It’s okay, seriously. Damon explained it all.” Elena said and I agreed.

I decided to let Elena talk to my cousin alone for a little bit and decided to go talk to Damon.

“I don’t think I’ve said thank you tonight.” I said as I walked into his room.

“You didn’t but Klaus needed to believe that she was dead.” Damon said.

“I know, but I wished you would’ve told me.” I told him.

“Klaus needed to believe your reaction. It had to be real.” Damon said.

I couldn’t think of anything else to say except, “I’m sorry for slapping you earlier.”

“Apology accepted. But, let’s be clear, if I had to choose between you, Elena, or that witch, then I would gladly let the witch die. I will always choose you or Elena.” Damon said as he got closer to me.

I couldn’t believe that he said that, but I guess I could because it seems to be that Damon cares. I’m glad that he cares about me and Elena, but I love my cousin, and I won’t lose her to anyone.

“Goodnight Damon.” I said as I headed out the door.

“Good night.” Damon said back.

I went back downstairs and met with Elena. She mouthed to me her plan to go to the basement, and I followed her. Elena pulled the dagger out of Elijah’s body, and sat against the wall. I sat next to her. We just waited until Elijah woke up.
