9. Katerina

I woke up the next morning, got dressed, and went with Elena to see Stefan. I hate seeing her upset, but I have no idea what to do to change that. We walked into the hallway, and Stefan was there, along with Rose, the girl that was going to hand Elena over to Klaus. I went for her, but Damon stopped me.

“Why the hell is she here? She’s the reason I almost lost Elena!” I yelled as I thrashed against Damon.

“She’s sorry about that and she wants to help us.” Stefan replied as calmly as he could.

I finally stopped thrashing and stood by Elena. I didn’t trust her, and I wasn’t going to let my guard down for a second.

“Fine, but I don’t trust you, and I will kill you if anything happens to my friends.” I growled as we headed into the living room.

Elena knew I was pissed because she sat next to me, grabbed my hand, and gave it a squeeze. I squeezed her hand back to let her know that I would be ok. Rose then started talking, so I just sat and listened.

“Okay, I only know what I’ve picked up over the years. And I don’t know what’s true and what’s not true. That’s the problem with all this vampire crap. But Klaus I know is real.” Rose started telling us.

“Who is he?” Elena asked, and I was curious too, but I think I’ve heard of him from somewhere.

“He’s one of the originals. He’s a legend.” Damon replied.

“First generation of vampires.” Stefan added.

“Like Elijah.” Elena said.

“No, Elijah was the Easter bunny compared to Klaus. He’s a foot soldier. Klaus is the real deal.” Rose said, which made Damon and I roll our eyes.

Damon and I may not get along most of the time, but when we do, then that’s when you need to worry because we do work well together. I had moved to the chair, where Damon was sitting on the arm, and I did that because I knew that I would want to kill Rose no matter what, and I knew that he would stop me. Damon took notice and placed his hand on mine.

“Klaus is known to be the oldest.” Stefan said. I was still trying to place where I had heard of Klaus before, but nothing was coming to me.

“Okay, so you’re saying… that the oldest vampire in the history of time is coming after me?” Elena asked.

“Yes.” “No.” Rose and Stefan said at the same time. I giggled at that, and Damon just smirked.

“What they’re saying is… I mean, if what she’s saying is true…”

“Which it is.”

“You’re not just saying this so we don’t kill you?”

“Which I’m not.”

“Then we’re looking at a solid maybe.” Damon finally finished his sentence, after Rose kept interrupting.

“Look, Elijah’s dead, right? No one else even knows that you exist.” Stefan said as he moved next to Elena.

“Not that you know of.” Rose said.

“Not helping.” Damon said which made Rose glare at him.

“Look, I’ve never even met anyone who’s laid eyes on him. I mean, we’re talking centuries of truth mixed with fiction. We don’t know what’s real. He could be some stupid bedtime story.” Stefan said, while trying to calm Elena down.

“He’s real. And he doesn’t give up. If he wants something, he gets it. If you’re not afraid then you’re an idiot.” Rose said, while trying to make us believe her.

“All right, we’re shaking. You made your point.” Damon said which made me smile.

Elena got up and adjusted her bag, so I got up as well. I grabbed my bag, and followed her, but stopped. I went back to Damon and kissed him on the cheek, and then I left. I knew that Rose had a thing for Damon, but I just wanted to see what would happen.

Elena and I left, but we didn’t go to school. She was going to talk to Katherine, and I went with her. I wanted to know a little more about her because I still don’t understand on why she’s attached to me. Elena made Caroline promise that she wouldn’t tell Stefan where we were, and she promised. Caroline finally left, and I just barely heard anything that Elena said to Katherine or vice versa, but I was pulled from my thoughts when Elena asked, “Thrown out?”

“My family, your true ancestors… they disowned me. My indiscretions were not tolerated at that time. I had a baby out of wedlock. The shame.” Katherine replied. I sat next to the tomb and listened to the story.

“It was kept secret.” Elena said interested.

“Mm-hm. My baby was given away. I was banished to England and I had to learn to adjust. So I quickly became English. It was there that I caught the eye of a nobleman named Klaus. I was taken with him at first till I found out what he was… and what he wanted from me. And then I ran like hell.” Katherine said, and that made me fell somewhat bad for her because she didn’t get to see her baby.

“So… what did Klaus want?” Elena asked.

“Same thing that he’ll want from you. He wants to break the curse.” Katherine replied.

“By sacrificing the Petrova doppelganger.” Elena said.

“He wanted to drain every single drop of blood from my body.” Katherine said, and that made my blood run cold.

I didn’t know which was worse: Katherine coming to town, or Klaus coming to town to kill my friends and family. I have no idea what I’m going to do, but I will do everything I can to help.

“What does the Petrova bloodline have to do with Klaus?” Elena asked.

“It’s really tedious… but the curse was bound by the sacrifice of Petrova blood. Witches are crafty with their spells. The doppelganger was created as a way to be able to undo the spell. Once the doppelganger reappeared, the curse can be broken.” Katherine replied.

“So you ran before he killed you.” Elena said.

“Something like that.” Katherine said.

“Rose never ended up taking you back to Klaus, did she?” Elena asked.

“No. But not because she had a change of heart.” Katherine replied, and I think I knew exactly why Rose didn’t do it.

“You killed yourself?” Elena asked shocked, and that gave me my answer.

“Klaus needed a human doppelganger. As a vampire, I was no longer any use to him.” Katherine replied.

“But it didn’t work. You didn’t really escape. You’ve been running ever since.” Elena said.

“I underestimated his spirit for vengeance. Living out of a suitcase is better than dying… so that you could have your blood spilled over some silly rock.” Katherine said, and that made Elena start to think things over.

“What’s wrong? Afraid I’m right? You don’t wanna die? There’s another way out. Better hurry. Your opportunity is going, going, going, and gone. I made the other choice.” Katherine said as she was almost done telling her story.

“Rose and Trevor spent the last 500 years running because you used them. Trevor just got killed.” Elena said, and she was starting to get mad.

“Never thought he would’ve lasted that long.” Katherine said coolly.

“You don’t even care that you ruined their lives.” Elena said.

“I was looking out for myself, Elena. I will always look out for myself. If you’re smart, you’ll do the same.” Katherine said before she turned around and kept looking through her family history.

“So how much of your little story is true?” Elena asked as she stood up.

“I have no reason to lie, Elena. I have no reason to do anything, but sit here and read and rot.” Katherine replied.

“Okay, assuming it’s even partially true, that’s the reason why you came back. Because you wanted to be the one to hand me over to Klaus.” Elena said as she turned to look at Katherine, who was slowly getting up.

“Five hundred years on the run, I figured maybe e’s be willing to strike a deal.” Katherine said.

“So you got Mason Lockwood to find you the moonstone.” Elena continued.

“Right again.” Katherine said with a somewhat smirk.

“What else is needed to break the curse?” Elena asked.

“Look who’s getting smarter.” Katherine said.

“It’s not just me or the stone, is it? Otherwise there would be no reason… to trigger Tyler Lockwood’s werewolf curse.” Elena said while walking back and forth.

“Witches and their spells. So many ingredients, so many people to sacrifice.” Katherine said with a roll of her head.

“So you need a werewolf.” Elena said as she was finally starting to figure things out.

“Believe it or not, they’re hard to come by.” Katherine said, and I knew that, that was true.

“What else?” Elena asked.

“A witch to do the spell. Mine bailed, but little Bonnie will do just fine.” Katherine replied.

“What else?” Elena asked again.

“A vampire.” Katherine replied, and that made my jaw drop.

“Caroline.” Elena said, and I knew that she was just as shocked as I was.

“Could’ve been anyone, I suppose, but I like the poetry of Caroline.” Katherine said.

“So you were gonna just hand us all over to be killed.” Elena said, and I was wondering the same thing.

“Better you die than I.” Katherine said before slowly disappearing into the tomb.

I was just as shocked as Elena was, but I knew that I would die before I let anything happen to her. She knows that, and she also knows that I stick to my word. Elena and I were getting ready to leave, when Stefan came down.

“Elena. Ryleigh.” Stefan called.

“Stefan, what are you doing here?” Elena asked, and I was wondering the same thing.

“I could ask you the same question.” Stefan replied.

“Caroline told you.” Elena said with a sigh.

“No, she kept your secret. It’s didn’t take long to figure out what was so important… that you’d keep it from me.” Stefan said back.

“I knew you’d stop me.” Elena said back to help her case.

“Listen to me. Whatever she said to you is a lie. Do not listen to her. She is a liar, Elena.” Stefan said, and that made me mad because I believed Katherine.

“What if she isn’t? You didn’t hear what she said.” Elena tried to reason.

“You don’t have to worry. I’m not gonna let anything happen to you.” Stefan said, and I knew that he meant it.

“That’s the problem. You won’t. But you’ll die trying, how is that any better?” Elena asked.

“There’s nothing you can do, Stefan. I haven’t even told you the best part of the story. He killed them. My entire family. Just to get back at me for running. Whatever you do to escape Klaus, he will get his vengeance. On your friends, your family, on anyone that you’ve ever loved.” Katherine said as I tried to keep the tears from falling.

“No, look at me. No. Do not listen to her, okay?” Stefan asked Elena, who was also trying not to cry.

“Always the protector. But even you must realize that she’s doomed. There’s nothing you can do to stop it. Unless, of course, you have this.” Katherine said, before showing us the moonstone.

“What?” Elena asked confused.

“Oh, no. There it is. That’s the ultimate lie, isn’t it? You spun this whole thing so that we would have to get the stone from you.” Stefan said as he stepped closer to the tomb entrance.

“I didn’t spin anything, Stefan. It’s the truth.” Katherine said back.

“No. Let me guess. You wanna trade that stone for your freedom, hmm? You manipulative, psychotic bitch.” Stefan said, and that made me want to question everything.

“My freedom? That’s where you’re wrong, Stefan. I don’t want my freedom. Because when Klaus shows up to kill us all and he will… I’ll be in the tomb. Where no vampire will enter because they can’t get out. I’ll be the safest psychotic bitch in town.” Katherine said before turning around and walking back into the tomb.

I ran after her, and Stefan almost did, but Elena stopped him. I heard Elena tell him that Katherine wouldn’t hurt me, but they still would be here for me because I needed a ride back.

“Why did you come in here, Ryleigh?” Katherine asked as she turned to look at me.

“I wanted to do this.” I replied before I hugged her. Katherine was shocked, but slowly hugged me back.

“I’m sorry about your family, but maybe next time you can tell me about mine.” I said as we pulled apart.

“Maybe, but you need to go back to your friends, but I’ll always be watching over you.” Katherine said as shooed me away.

“I know, and I believe you, even if nobody else does.” I said as I walked back to Stefan and Elena.

We left and Stefan followed us to his house because I wanted to see Damon before I went home. When I opened the door, I wish I hadn’t because I saw Damon and Rose sitting on the floor under a blanket. I ran back out the door, with Damon calling my name. I ran into Stefan, who drove me home. He didn’t ask any questions, and I’m glad because I didn’t really want to answer them. Stefan dropped me off at home, and I honestly thought about running back to Katherine, but I knew that Stefan closed the door, so I couldn’t get in to see her. I finally just crashed on my bed, and cried myself to sleep.
