My Uncle Niall has been the person that I have most loved in my entire life. Other than my mom and dad of course. I remember being little and him teaching me how to ride my bike, how to write my name, how to say swears in an Irish accent.
And then he left.
Right after the last tour ended, and we finally got to come back home permanently Uncle Niall decided he needed to spend some time with his family in Ireland.
And I didn't understand, because I thought we were his family. That's what they always said, that we were a family.
I remember he told me the night before he left that he would be back soon, that he loved me, that he always would. And I cried and cried, wishing that he didn't have to go.
Then he gave me a phone, dad didn't let me have a cell phone so Uncle Niall got me one of those old-fashioned cord phones.
He told me, "Princess, whenever you need me. Day or night, I will answer your call. That I promise you. I love you, Ems, don't forget that."
And he left.
That was the longest year of my life. School was terrible, my Uncles were all busy, and dad well, at least I had dad.
But Uncle Niall came back, he came back for good he says. But it scares me to think that I love him so much, that when he leaves it feels weird. Like a big part of me is missing.
I hope he never leaves me again.
"Princess, your dad called!"
I run to the stairs and smile, "They're coming back tomorrow?"
"Yes they are."
I run down the stairs and he catches me on the last step and swings me around the kitchen chuckling.
"Guess that means I'm moving out."
"Emma, you know this wasn't permanent."
I feel myself blush and look down, "Yeah, I know."
"Ems, I'm not leaving again." He takes my hands and smiles at me. "I'm not leaving you, I'm just moving back home, okay?"
He ruffles my hair and goes back to the cutting board on the counter.
"What are you making?" I ask coming closer.
"For what?" he says without looking up.
I tap him on the hand lightly and he looks at me.
"For coming back."
"I'll always be back for you, princess. Now go get washed up, I need some help."
The last night uncle Niall and I spent together before mom and dad came back home we spent watching movies and eating the dinner he made. It was exactly the way I would want to spend it.
By the time we woke up, I giggled as I opened my eyes seeing that we didn't even make it to our beds, instead we had taken the sofas in the living room and slept on them the entire night. I got up and walked to my room making as little noise as possible. I looked at the clock and smiled, mom and dad were coming home in two hours.
I quickly got dressed and cleaned up the living room and kitchen without waking Uncle Niall, and finally when I saw there was a half hour left I tapped his shoulder lightly, hoping he'd wake up easily.
He grunted and turned away from me.
"Uncle Niall." I said a bit louder. He didn't respond. "Uncle Niall! Get up! Mum and dad are coming home in half an hour."
"Ems, five more minutes."
His Irish accent was way thicker when he was half asleep and it made me laugh.
"Why are you laughing?"
"No reason. Just get up. I cleaned everything, you just need to get dressed."
He sits up on the sofa and looks at me still half-asleep, "Emma, I'm supposed to be taking care of you, why are you cleaning up for me?"
"Just go get dressed."
"Alright, princess. I'll be down soon."
As soon as they enter the door I jump upon my dad and am enveloped by his smell and his strong arms. His hair had gotten longer, again, and he wore a hat to cover it up. He looked tan and happy, just like mum.
"Baby, we missed you." He says lifting me up and kissing both my cheeks. I laugh as he struggles to lift me higher, "You've gotten bigger."
"Dad, it's only been two weeks."
"What have you been feeding her?" He says looking at Uncle Niall.
"Not pancakes." He says smirking.
As soon as dad puts me down I wrap my arms around my mum's waist and smile as she bends over to hug me tightly.
"Have you been good Emma?"
"The best." I say smiling up at her, "How was your vacation?"
"Very fun." Dad says moving the suitcases from the door to the living room. Strangely enough, mom doesn't help him. She simply sits upon the sofa and takes off her shoes.
Uncle Niall looks at her and then at me, "You mum looks wrecked."
"It was a bloody long flight." Dad says putting the last suitcase next to the sofa and finally sitting down.
"Indeed it was." Mum says closing her eyes and laying back onto the plush sofa.
"You look a bit pale there, Edie." Uncle Niall says looking at my dad, "What did ya do to her Harry? She looks a mess!"
"She got sick before we left Niall, I don't know what's wrong."
I approach the couch and kneel beside my mum, putting a hand on her forehead, "Are you alright, mum?"
"I'm fine baby. I think I just need a bit of a nap."
"Are you sure?"
"Alright." I say getting up and sitting next to dad.
His arm immediately goes around me and hugs me tightly. I lay against him and close my eyes, taking in the fact that he was finally back. It didn't hit me how much I had missed him until he was finally back.
"I'm glad you're home, dad."
"Me too, Ems."
