Within Me

Poem for the Hidden Powers competition. [This is also included in my "Leaves of Lines" compilation]

1. Within Me

I always knew,

I could always see,

I always felt it

there in me.

Twisting and turning,

A churning sea,

Wriggling and writhing

Within me.

Something different,

filling with glee

drowning with sorrow,

Swelling within me.

Rising and yearning,

the urge to flee

to where I can let it

Stir within me.

It strains and bursts,

an untamed sea,

bold and true,

the strength within me.

The power surges,

but battling the sea

is my desperate guise:

the weakness within me.

To hold it back,

an aching plea

to stop the surge

Growing in me.

The power high,

the damage be,

due to that which

churns within me.

I try to stop,

I try to flee,

I try to fight

What’s becoming me.

It burns and rages,

bursting free,

that dangerous spark

That is me.

I drop the guise

dismiss the plea

I am one with

what's in me.

It let me loose,

I let it be,

that terrible power

Is me.

I set it free.
