Skin Deep

For teenage model Viola Lane, her image has been everything, but everything changes when she moves to the small town of Mayview, Connecticut and meets honor student and fan Ariella Dean. As the two become closer, feelings arise, and Viola begins to wonder if she's found the one person who can truly love her for her.

1. Starting Over

"Are you sure you want to do this, Vi?"

"I'm sure. I'm done being a doll."

"You can just take a break, you know."

"I told you, I'm done!"

Viola Lane inserted her earbuds into her ears, signaling the conversation was over and she did not want to be disturbed. Staring out the window of the plane, she lost herself in her own thoughts. Do I really want to do this? Do I just need a break? Should I stay in this business for the money? She thought. No. I've made up my mind and I'm done.

Surely the news is out by now. She thought as she turned on and unlocked her tablet. Article after article told of her refusal to renew her modeling contract and retirement from the industry. Of course each article also described how her retirement was a waste of her beauty, and that annoyed Viola more than anything. Sighing to herself, she turned the tablet off. Viola was definitely not going to miss being seen only as a pretty face instead of an actual person.

Stepping off the plane felt like heaven on earth. Finally, Viola had made the first step to being Viola Lane. Not Viola Lane the model, not Viola Lane the spokesperson for some corporation, just Viola Lane. A normal girl who liked normal things. Well, normal for the most part. Once you're in the public eye, you're never truly out of it.

She looked around, hoping to find the last remaining posters of her had been removed from the airport. Most of them were gone, save for a few from companies who had yet to replace the old advertisements with new ones. Surely no one here would recognize her. They didn't, but that didn't stop her from clutching her bag and holding her breath any time someone came towards her with a camera in hand, only to completely bypass her.

Running a hand through her hair, Viola chuckled at the irony. After years of being in front of a camera, she now ran from them. As she looked over her shoulder to make sure the latest cameraman was gone, she felt her pocket buzz. Who the hell is calling me now? Viola thought as she pulled her cell phone from her pocket. Across the top of the screen in white letters read "Chad Michelson". Rolling her eyes, she swiped right, declining the call. It rang again. She declined again. After repeating the process at least three more times, Viola came to the conclusion that Chad wouldn't quit until she answered.

"Hey, Vi, what's up?" came a voice Viola had come to loathe.

"Let's just cut to the chase. I am not interested. Just because we took a few pictures together and the internet said we were dating doesn't mean we actually were. Don't call me again. Goodbye," Viola punctuated her final word by jabbing the end call button with her thumb before ducking into a black car parked outside the airport, likely hired by her parents to escort the three of them to a new house they'd just purchased in.. what was it called? Merryview? Maytown? Something beginning with the letter M. Growing tired of staring out the window, Viola searched through her bag for the novel she'd been reading. While attempting to find said novel, she ended up with enough business cards to print a book on. Viola didn't hesitate to throw them one by one out the window. She stared at the final card pinched between her thumb and index finger. Once she threw this card, this final piece of paper, she would be free. With a flick of the wrist, the card sailed out the window to be carried away by the wind.

That was it. She had finally cut the last tie to her career. She was officially done with that world and everyone in it. Viola Lane was free.
