Paris Wish

1. Chapter 1

I was sitting on the couch, staring out the frosted window as the snowflakes landed softly on the light, sparkling snow. I was so caught up in the moment; I couldn’t feel the mug of scorching hot chocolate burning my hands.

“Ouch…” I set the cup on the table and walk over to the kitchen. I turn on the cold water quickly. As I dry off my hands, I can see the bubbles on my hands starting to form. As I go to sit back down, I hear a car pulling into the driveway. I look at my watch. “Hm, early,”  I pretend to be sleeping as my mother walks in laughing, and I can hear Eric coming in behind her.

“Oh, shh…” My mother tells Eric.

“Oops,” says Eric, “Well, I better get going.”

“Thank you, Eric.” He kisses her cheek and shuts the door. As soon as he leaves, I can feel my mother’s warm hand touch my forehead.

“All the years living with you, I can tell you’re faking,” My mother says to me. I open one eye and smile at her. Her hair is a beautiful caramel colour in curls and her light green eyes are sparkling. How did my dad ever leave her?

I slowly sit up and as I reach for my hot chocolate, my mother grabs my wrist. She examines my hand, and then looks at me. I glance at the hot chocolate mug and she understands.

“Daydreaming again?” She asks.

“Not really, just caught in the moment” I reply.

“Ah, I see. Come with me, I can help with those hands of yours.” She smiles then gets up and walks down the hall to the bathroom.

I stand in the doorway while my mother looks for the medicine Band-Aids. I don’t tell her that we don’t have any because then she’ll freak that I didn’t tell her when we went shopping.

“Oh shoot, sorry honey, we’re out. Remind me the next time we go shopping so I can pick them up for you.”

“I’ll try not to forget.” Mom shoots a look at me and I put my hands up. “Okay, okay. I was kidding.”
