"C'mon, Caitlyn. It's a new school, new people, new friends-" I opened the car door, cutting my mother off. "Honey," she called after me. "At least try to make friends?" She was holding onto the charm I've held when I get nervous. I plucked it out her long fingers, "I love you, Mom." I kissed her cheek and left the car. I was immediately consumed with panic as I looked up at the school. My heart was beating miles per second, and my breathing was unsteady. I ducked my head, walking through the hall to my first class, trigonometry. Though I believe we will NEVER use this math skill in our lives, I still enjoy doing math. I immediately grabbed for the little shamrock in my pocket. Every one stared as I sat in the seat in the mid section. "Taken." A girl to my right snapped. "Sorry," I mumbled and moved to the next empty seat in the front, "New kids don't sit in the front." A guy said. I frowned and ended up in the seat in the far back beside the window. I let out a shaky sigh as the teacher walked into the small classroom.

"Okay class, the Law of Cosines-" his words stopped as soon as he made eye contact with me. He seemed like a laid back teacher; shaggy brown hair with streaks of grey spotted in random places among the hair on his head and his short beard: he wore khakis and a green polo shirt. He peered at me through his glasses with brow furrowed and eyes narrowed.

"And who must you be?" His words were soft but intimidating.

My heart raced and I felt like I was shaking, but I clutched the small charm in my hand and squeezed harshly before speaking: "Caitlyn, Caitlyn Brennan." The teacher began to stroll between each row of desks like a shark circling it's prey.

"And where are you from, Ms. Brennan?"

"Allen, Kansas." I answered shyly and he smiled, "Ah, kind of a city place, right?"

"Not exactly, I mean, I lived on the country side."

"Redneck," someone coughed in the front making stifled laughter start up. "Quiet, Bryan." The teacher snapped at a kid who was dressed in expensive clothing. "C'mon, bro, I gotta mess with the new kid a little." He defended. "Kansas is a much more civilised state than your IQ allows you to think. And I think I can prove that by your last test score, bro." Everyone laughed as the teacher still weaves his way to my desk.

"And what brought you to Columbus, Ohio?" He asked without looking away from the spot in front of him.

"M-my dad was stationed at the military base." I answer.

"An army brat, huh?" The questions kept coming with every pace closer. "Yeah." I nod. He was now in front of my desk, standing over me intimidatingly. "Well, my name is Mr. Logan. I'll be your teacher for the rest of the year. And don't worry about these idiots like Bryan." The last sentence Mr. Logan whispered just loud enough for a few students to giggle over.

"Okay students, so who can tell me the formula for the Law of Cosines..."

"See I told you she was a geek. She's carrying comic books for god's sake." I heard a girl say to her friend as I passed by. It was now the end of a horrible first day. I had gotten lost six times, people were already talking about me, and someone stole the lunch money out of my locker.

I threw my stuff into the locker and yanked my penny board from the long locker. I made my way out of the school and texted my mom:

Hey gonna be home late. Love you xx

I dropped the board to the sidewalk and made my way down to town. I had an interview for a place called Northstar Cafe in twenty minutes.

I first stopped by a little store, Mel's, and kicked up my board so I could carry it. I immediately made my way to the drinks and picked out a bottle of Naked and a Snickers since I didn't eat lunch. I also picked out a new pair of earbuds (since mine were also stolen along with my cash) I walked up to the register where a boy about my age stood. His hair was black and long enough it fell in his face. He had a lip ring on the right side and his eyes were a metallic blue I had never seen before. He was tall, about 6'4" or 5". As soon as I sat the supplies on the counter he spoke: "Rough day?" I peered up at him, "How'd you know?" I asked. He chuckled, "No one just walks in with shoulders slumped with a messy bun and a penny board just to buy a drink and candy." I raised an eyebrow. He laughed, "You look stressed." I rolled my eyes, "Yeah it was kind of my first day at school." I answer.

"No way. I hated my first day of kindergarten too." The boy says in a serious tone before cracking a smile. "I'm just messing with you. But what year are you?"

"Senior." I answer. "Ah, that must suck moving on your senior year. Especially since the year's almost over anyway." I nodded watching him check out the items, "$23.60." I handed him my card and he swiped it. "I'm Jordan by the way." He said. "Yeah I can kind of tell by your name tag." I say. Jordan scoffed playfully, "I meet you for the first time and you're already getting sassy with me?" I laughed a little and he handed my card back, "There's a smile." I picked up my stuff and walked towards the door but stopped when Jordan hollered after me, "Can I know your name?" I smile and turn to face him, "I'm Caitlyn."

"It's nice to meet you Caitlyn." I smiled to myself as I walked out, biting my lip.
