20. Chapter 20

'Bella?' Harry shook my shoulder gently, to wake me up from my thoughts. 'What?' I asked confused and aware of the fact that I hadn't been listening to anything that had been said. 'Are you going to come?' Harry asked again. I had no idea what he was talking about, to be honest.
'I, ehm..'
'You have no idea what he is talking about do you?' Alice sighed.
'No, sorry.' I smiled awkwardly.
'My mum has invited all of you for dinner tomorrow.' Harry explained.
'Okay, I'll come.' I dismissed the subject quickly, not exactly in the mood to talk about fun things. My soul was being torn apart by what I had found out the day before and soon I was in deep thoughts again. But I could hear Ben move around on his chair nervously. For a moment his hand touched mine underneath the table after Alice had asked me if there was something wrong. 'No, nothing.' I said smiling and felt his hand move away again.
It felt wrong to lie to her, but I had no choice.

'We need to talk.' Ben whispered to me when the canteen emptied. He walked beside me down the hall. I had no idea where the others had gone, but I assumed they weren't with us, otherwise Ben wouldn't bring it up. 'Okay.' I said.
'Your locker, after school.'
I nodded. Without another word he walked away. I listened to his footsteps disappearing in the crowd and sighed. What was I going to do?
I thought about it while walking to my class, my cane moving along the ground, following the walls, but I didn't pay as much attention to it as I would normally do, causing me to bump into a wall twice. When I got to class, with an aching shoulder, the teacher had already started.
I used my always working excuse of 'having trouble finding the classroom' and sunk down in a seat by the window.
I realised I had gotten involved in two secrets, that I couldn't share with anyone. But if I didn't share it, and Alice and Ben would find out, I would be just as screwed. Maybe I could convince him to share his secret. I already knew he wanted to do it, but Thomas, whoever he really was, stopped him.
I had to try it: this wasn't something you should hide from your best friends.

I sat beside the door in my last class so I could leave early. Nervously, I made my way to my locker, this time paying better attention to where I was going. The whispers and sometimes rude comments, didn't bother me this time. When I arrived at my locker, there were still a lot of students in the halls. Ben probably wouldn't come until everyone had left the building, so I took the time to get ready to go home myself.
'Hey Bella?' An excited Alice bumped into me. Her enthusiasm always put a smile on my face, just like it did this time. She didn't deserve to have her heart broken like that.
'How are you?' I asked, genuinely wanting to know. 'I'm great! Ben and I are going to watch a movie tonight.' She squealed. I had never seen her like that. It made my stomach ache, knowing she would never get what she wanted. 'Just, be careful.' I mumbled in response.
She barely paid attention to me or maybe she just didn't hear it. 'I gotta go!' She said, hugging me tightly before running off. 'See you tomorrow!' I heard her shout behind me.
I slammed my locker shut in frustration. The sound it made echoed through the now abandoned hallway. For some reason it sent a shiver down my spine. I leaned against the door while I waited for Ben. When I heard footsteps approaching, I initially thought it was him, but there were two pair of feet, which confused me.
'Hi.' Ben said.
'Hi.' I said, my head tilted a little bit to the side. There was someone with him and I had a good feeling who it was.
'I brought Thomas.' Ben said, as if reading my mind.
I couldn't help but taking a step back. I wanted to use this opportunity to convince Ben to be honest, but I would never get the chance if Thomas was here too.
'Thank you,'  Ben started, 'for not telling anyone.' I didn't know what to say to him.
'I know it seems a bit crazy for you that I have kept this a secret, but you need to understand that, if I told anyone, Thomas parents might find out. And they wouldn't be so understanding.' I felt bad for him. For Ben, that is, not so much for Thomas. It's a lot to ask your boyfriend to pretend to be someone he's not. But all of it didn't matter: I wasn't going to do the same thing.
'Who knows about it, beside me?' I said, assuming that his parents or at least Matt knew.
Neither one of them responded. I shook my head in disbelief. 'Not even your own brother?' I must admit I was quite impressed by the fact that he managed to keep this a secret from everyone, for how ever long it had been going on.
'Look, it's all new to me too.' Ben defended himself. But I shook my head again. This was bullshit. I wish I had never walked into that room. 'You can't keep this a secret any longer.' I whispered, picking up my bag from the floor. For me this conversation was over.
'No. Thomas-'
'Maybe, Thomas doesn't deserve you if he's really putting you through all of this.' I regretted saying it as soon as the words left my mouth.

'Hey! You promised!' Thomas got in between. He was angry. I realised that the only words I had ever heard coming from his mouth were said in anger. 'You're not going to tell anyone.' My cane was suddenly snatched out of my hand.
I realised he had taken it from me when Ben tried to calm him down. 'Thomas, give it back.' I stepped back, feeling very vulnerable. My cane was like my eyes. Without it I couldn't see.
I felt tears burn in my eyes. Thomas, to me, was a terrible person. I didn't care what his motives were, this was wrong. What did Ben even see in him?  When Ben finally calmed Thomas down, he gave it back to me. I took it, my hand shaking, and started walking down the hall without saying anything. 'Bella, wait!' Ben shouted after me, but I din't turn around. I didn't want to be part of this. It wasn't worth losing my friends. Although I still didn't know what to do..
