16. Chapter 8 - Part 4

"You wanna order pizza?" Harry asked from the kitchen.

We were both starving and decided to discuss the 'real' truth over some food. I had changed into Harry's shorts and his huge t-shirt which fit me like a dress. Harry changed into some sweats and was in the process of making us both a hot chocolate. I made it extra clear that I wanted 4 marshmallows and whipped cream. What's hot chocolate without the cream?

"We could... or we could order something else?" I asked, hoping he would catch the hint.

"You wanna order Fish Grill?" he asked, peaking his head round the corner of the kitchen door.

"I mean it's up to you." I replied, trying to sound polite.

"I could eat some fish." he smiled.

I picked up the phone and dialled the number. I quickly told them our order and Harry disappeared back into the kitchen, returning a few minutes later with two cups of hot chocolate. I was pleased to see that the one he handed to me had four marshmallows on top of a huge dollop of cream.

"Why four?" Harry asked whilst dipping his tongue into his cream.

"I've always had four marshmallows." I replied.

"Since when?"

"It started when I was about 6 years old. My grandmother bought me a hot chocolate from this amazing coffee shop and it had four marshmallows on it. I got quite upset because I wanted more, so to cheer me up, my grandmother told me that each marshmallow represented each member of my family. My father, my mother, me and my grandmother. She died a couple of weeks later... and it just kinda reminds me of her I guess."

I leaned over to wipe the cream from the tip of his nose and his dimples showed up as I licked it from my thumb.

"Sexy." he smirked.

"Shut up!" I playfully hit his arm and he laughed.

"Bella... I don't think we should have this conversation. I mean, I like it when we're having a laugh together... and I'm pretty sure you're gonna run away from me when I tell you this." The seriousness in his voice made him sound nervous.

"Harry, I promised I would stay. I need to know the truth." He's lied to me so many times, I don't think I can take another lie.

"Fine." he simply replied.

I moved to the floor and crossed my legs. Harry sat in front of me and spread his legs so that they were either side of me. He rested back on his hands and I held my hot chocolate in my lap, keeping my hands on the side of the cup. He took a deep breath before giving me his explanation.

"Wow, this is really hard. Urm... quite a while ago, you went to a father-daughter disco right?" he asked.

"Urm, yeah." I remember this night clearly. My father stood me up and I had to go on my own.

"You were standing outside your primary school with your Mum. You were wearing this cute little pink dress with silver sparkles all over it and you had your hair up in a bun. I still remember your tiara. You had these little black dolly shoes on."

My eyes grew wider as he continued reminiscing on the night. Was he there?

"You must have been standing there for about 15 minutes before hugging your Mum and walking inside. I watched as she told you she'd pick you up at 7pm. I smiled when I heard your name, Bella. You looked absolutely devastated. I could see the tears starting to form in your eyes. I sat behind the big dustbin for almost an hour, and then I saw you running out."

I could feel my eyes getting heavier as he went on.

"You sat on the curb and I desperately wanted to run over to you and just... talk to you. So I did." He paused.

My mind went back to that very night. I remember sitting on the damp curb all by myself until a young boy rushed over to me and gave me his jacket. "You. You were the little boy from that night."

"Mhmm. It was the second time I'd ran away from home, I was sleeping behind the school in a tent I found. I gave you my jacket and you gave me your juice box. I remember asking why you were sat outside and why you weren't inside with everyone else. You said..."

"I don't have a Daddy to dance with." We both said at the same time.

"Yeah. You said he never turned up."

I was gob smacked... mind blown... shocked that all this time, Harry was never really a stranger to me. But that still didn't explain how he knew everything about me.

"So you stalked me for the next 10 years of my life?" I asked, placing my cup on the table and moving to the couch.

He followed me and sat on the edge of the table. "No, don't be stupid. I will admit I was quite fond of you and at the time, I wanted to get to know you more. I wanted to to go to a high school nearby, so Seth and Keith helped me get into McKinley High. I asked around the whole school if anyone knew anything about you... eventually I met a girl who was dropped out of Eden Grammar and she seemed to know quite a bit about you. I found out where you lived, what you looked like, everything I could get. But it still wasn't enough. I wanted to see you... I mean, it'd been nearly 10 years. So, I sneaked into Eden and I bumped into you. I recognised you straight away, but I was too scared to talk to you so I snapped at you."

"I... I don't know what to say Harry." I was speechless... for the first time in my life.

"There's more." he added.

Was he serious?

"I'm in quite a bit of... trouble. I need you to know that I'm 100 per cent innocent... it wasn't even my fault." He grabbed my hands.

My stomach turned upside down as his face turned from a sad puppy to a guilty criminal.

"Two years ago... me and my mate Reece were arrested for DUI and we were only 16 years old at the time, it was hard. Reece didn't handle it very well... in fact, he was taken out of his cell and moved to an asylum half way across the world. I haven't seen or heard from him since. I managed to escape the prison after months of failed attempts. I only ended up getting myself into even more danger because I'm currently number seven on the Ten Most Wanted list in South Carolina."

That was it. That was what I had been dreading since we came here. This is what Harry warned me about... but I didn't listen. I froze.

"Bella... Bella say something." he begged.

"I... you... we..." The doorbell rang and brought me out of my trance.

"I'll get it." Harry said and stood up to answer the door.

I took my chance to leave and rushed into the hallway to put my shoes on. As soon as I grabbed my bag, Harry slammed the door shut and dropped the bag of food to the floor. He rushed over to me and grabbed my arms, making me drop my bag and coat. He pushed me up to the wall and pinned my arms above my head.

"Harry please! Just let me leave!" I cried, tears rushing down my face. I was terrified.

"You said you'd stay! You promised!" he shouted in my face.

I scrunched my eyes shut and did my best to release myself from his grip. He loosened his hands and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me in for a hug. Is he serious?! He wants a hug after he's just told me he's a criminal?! I declined and shoved him away from me, running upstairs and locking myself in the bathroom. I heard him run up after me and he began banging on the door.

"BELL! BELLA OPEN THE DOOR!" he screamed. I ignored him and cried my eyes out, hoping he would leave me alone. "You wanted an explanation and you got one!" he shouted once more and headed back downstairs.

I left it about twenty minutes before standing up and opening the door. I thought maybe he would be sat at the bottom of the steps waiting for me to come out... but he wasn't there. I shouted his name a couple of times but I got no reply. I slowly crept downstairs, hoping to find him calmer than before, but he was no where to be seen. I checked the kitchen, the living room, even the back garden... but he wasn't there.

I gave up looking and slumped on the couch to find a note on the coffee table. It read,

'Bella. I'm so sorry you had to find out this way. I really hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me. Unfortunately, I won't be around to witness this, I've decided it's best if I wasn't around you. I don't want to ruin you any more than I already have done. Again, I deeply apologise and you should know I will always love you. I've never really been good at solving problems. I guess when I make mistakes, I tend to just run from them. All my love, Harry.'

I folded the note and ran into the hallway to put my shoes on and grab my bag. I dialled Trevor's number and calmly asked for a ride back to my house. Obviously he questioned me about my night but I had no time for it so I told him we'd talk on the way home.

Harry's gone. And I have to find him.
