Saving Her

He came out from the shadows, with that familiar sweet voice. I knew from that moment there was something about him. Now I can't let go, not ever.

1. Familiar Shadows

I just watched the ground below as all the cars moved along the busy streets completely unaware that I was high up above them. I just come here sometimes, for air. I mean, nobody understands me at home. I feel so alone. My Father doesn't see me as a woman he just sees me as another puppet in the Martinez family show and I'm beyond sick of it. As for my Mother, she just goes along with whatever he wants. What's worse is that she doesn't even see me as a daughter, and to be honest I don't see her as a Mother. My nurse is more of a Mother to me than she will ever be. Nurse is the only one in the house that actually talks to me like a woman and not a possession like the others do. I slowly began to stand up as I heard ambulance sirens run by. I walked along the side of the building slowly putting one foot in front of the other.

"Having fun up here?" I heard a voice which caused me to jump when I felt a hand pull me forwards and steady me. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just... needed time." I stared down at the floor because I felt awkward attempting to make eye contact with a face I was unable to even see.

"You don't seem fine. I heard your crying earlier..." He blurted out.

"You heard that?" I said, quietly..

"I just wanna help you, I wanna help make whatever's upsetting you disappear. If you'll let me?"

"Why do you even want to help? I don't know you, you're nothing but a stranger."

"I lost someone very close to me. She used to stand on top of bridges for air." I barely noticed him gesture air quotes around the word air. "Until one night, she finally did it. She finally jumped from the bridge into the Ocean. Her body was recovered Three weeks later, dead."

I moved my hand out to rub his arm, I could tell producing that story hurt him. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry, it's not your fault. That's why I'm going to help you. Save you if you like, because I couldn't do the same for her." I finally saw his head nod through the darkness.

"I was actually going to head home in a minute anyway." I sat back down on the edge of the building and noticed him sit down next to me.

"Why do you come up here for air? Why not go for a walk?"

"I'm sure you know the answer to that."

"Okay well, what's going on?" I felt his eyes on me again as I felt pressured into answering his questions.

"My family isn't the easiest to tolerate. I mean, I'd be happier just running away from everything and living in a cardboard box, at least I'd have time to breathe for once." I admitted.

"Seriously?" I heard him answer back. "Your voice seems strangely familiar."

"Mine? I doubt that." I stared down at the traffic again.

"Look. I think you should just go home and tell your parents how you're feeling, it might help."

"I guess." I slowly began to stand up with his help. "Thank you for everything."

"Don't thank me. I'll be here, if you ever need to talk again." I saw his head move in the motion of a nod through the darkness as he slowly walked off.

"But wait!" I shouted after him, finally realising this his voice was too familiar.

But he was gone. I struggled to remember where I've heard his voice but I know that I've defiantly heard it. Maybe he was someone I knew, someone special perhaps.
