3. Chapter 2

Jasmin's P.O.V

I was helping Lizzy finish up the last order when Isaac, the manager walked over to us.

"Hey Jas, there's someone on the phone asking for you, said his name is Officer Castillo," he said.

"I don't know any Officer Castillo," I replied.

"He said it's important," Isaac replied.

I finished up the order, then walked over to the back and picked up the phone.

"This is Jasmin," I spoke into the phone.

"Hello Jasmin this is Officer Castillo," he greeted.

"Hi Officer Castillo, what can I do for you?" I asked.

"I just need to ask you some questions," he replied.

"Okay," I responded.

"Did you know someone named Alexis Carter?" he asked.

"Yes, he's my brother," I answered.

"Did you know he was involved with gangs?" he questioned.

"No, my brother would never be into that kind of stuff, what is this all about?" I asked.

"Jasmin, I'm afraid your brother was murdered, we found him in an old park, by the time we got there he was already dead," he answered.

"No, no, no, no, that can't be true, my brother is at school, are you sure we're talking about the same Alexis Carter?" I questioned.

"Why don't you go to the morgue and see if it's your brother?" he asked.

"Well my shift is about to be over so I'll go, Officer Castillo please just tell me it's not my brother, he's the only family member I have left," I told him.

"I can't promise you anything," he sighed.

I hung up the phone, tears streamed down my face. Alexis can't be dead, he just can't be dead. He's the only one I have left, oh God, please don't let it be my brother, please. I started walking back to the front register and clocked out. I went to the back, grabbed my purse and my coat.

"Jasmin what's wrong?" Isaac asked.

"Alexis is dead," I half whispered.

"I'm so sorry, I'm giving you a few days off, this must be hard for you, I'll have someone work your shift," he replied.

"No, Isaac, it's fine, I'll be back by tomorrow," I told him.

"No, don't argue with me Jasmin, you need some time off to deal with all of this," he responded as Lizzy walked by.

"What happened?" she asked.

"My brother is dead," I answered.

"I'm really sorry about that Jasmin, take time off, I'll work your shift, well if that's fine with you?" she asked.

"Yes, Lizzy can work your shift, you just take some time off," Isaac said.

"Fine, only a couple of days," I sighed.

"Bye Jasmin, and again I'm really sorry," Lizzy spoke.

I nodded and headed out to the parking lot. As I was walking to my car I felt as if someone was watching me. I looked around but, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I got in my car, turned it on and headed to the hospital. I just hope it's not Alexis, I can't loose my brother, I already lost my twin sister and it was probably my fault not my mom's. After about 15 minutes I arrived at the hospital. I parked my car, got out and locked it, then headed inside.

"Hi, I'm here to identify a body," I told the nurse.

"Name," she replied.

"Jasmin Noelle Carter," I answered.

"Right, Officer Castillo called and said you might be coming in, right this way please," she responded as she lead me to the morgue.

I took a deep breath before walking in. Please don't let it be my brother, I can't loose him. He's the only other person I have left. The doctor pulled the sheet off and my eyes instantly filled with tears.

"That's my brother, Alexis Carter," I sobbed.

"I'm so sorry, Ms. Carter, I know this isn't the right time but, there's a few papers I need you to sign," he replied.

"Okay," I responded.

I followed him out of the morgue towards the reception area. I signed the papers and left. I got to car, got in, turned it on, and drove out of the hospital parking lot. I just can't believe Alexis is dead, my little brother. He was only 16 years old, had a full life ahead of him. He wanted to study to become a lawyer.

"Why Alexis?" I quietly asked myself.

I finally arrived at the hotel parking lot, I parked my car, got out and locked it. I headed inside to the lobby and walked up the stairs to the second floor. Who would do this to my brother and why, he was such a sweet kid. I got to my door, I put the key in the lock and unlocked the door. I walked in closing the door and locking it. I imagined my brother sitting on the old couch watching t.v. and he'd turn around and say,"Hey sis, you're home." More tears streamed down my face, my little brother is gone.

"What am I gonna do without you?" I asked myself.

We've been living with each other after I turned 18, I took full custody of him. Our step-dad was sent to jail for attempted murder against some co-worker. My mom has been in rehab all these years, my real dad, he left when me and Diana were only 2 years, almost 3, Alexis was only a couple of months old. He never came back, that's when my mom met my step-dad, he was kind and caring. Then Diana died and that's when things got really bad. Just then there was a knock on my door.

"Who is it?" I asked as I wiped my tears away.

"Ms. Carter it's Alexis' math teacher, Mr. Blanco," he answered.

I walked over to the door and opened it, letting him in.

"Hi Mr. Blanco, what can I do for you?" I asked.

"I didn't see Alexis at school today and I was concerned, he has never missed a day of school," he answered.

"Mr. Blanco, Alexis was murdered this morning," I answered trying not to cry but failed.

"Oh, I'm so sorry Ms. Carter if there's anything I can do, anything at all, you just let me know," he replied.

"Well I was hoping some of his friends can earn some money to pay for the funeral costs and all that," I responded.

"I'll be sure to talk to the principal about that," he said.

"Okay, thanks Mr. Blanco," I told him as he opened the door and left.

I closed the door and locked it again. I wasn't in the mood to do anything, so I walked over to the room I once shared with Alexis. The minute my head hit the pillow I was in a deep sleep.
