3. Radio 1

I was awakened by Dan once again as I attempted to drag myself out of bed. We walked to the underground station close by and got the tube train to central London. It didn't feel real as I walked into the BBC radio building, I passed by radio DJs who I recognised. Fearne Cotton and Scott Mills casually passed by.

"That's...That..." I stuttered starstruck.
I stood outside the office, we had problems getting in the building, as I wasn't a official employee and didn't have the pass to get it. So Dan and Phil had to do a lot of convincing, but right now Dan and Phil were trying to convince the boss to give me the runner job. I didn't understand why not, all I had to do was serve coffee and get paperwork, not exactly that troublesome.

"But sir please, she's a friend..."
"Howell, we've had hundreds of applicants. You can't just waltz in here and expect me to give her the job on the spot. I need a CV and interview and-"
I peered my head in, "I do have a CV, sorry to interrupt."
Dan leaned towards me and hissed, "I told you to wait outside."
I handed the boss who sat behind the desk, I smiled forcefully, "Well he needs it so, shush!"
"Okay, I'll give you a test run. You've got two weeks."

I beamed happily, "R...Really!?"

"Yes, unless you don't want it?"
"Of course! Thank you so much!" I nodded excitedly.

I felt my knees grow numb and drop down, but I quickly regain my posture as we left.

We all cheered after we left his office, I quickly hugged Phil and found myself in Dan's arms, he lifted me off the ground, which I wasn't expecting.  He seemed more happier than I was.

My face felt warm as I was placed back on the ground. "Thank you so much, I haven't figured out what I'm doing but I will pay you back somehow I-"
"It's okay, that's what friends do." Phil reassured me.

They both were hurried away by colleagues to go to an meeting for their next show, all the sudden I was put straight to work.

"I'd like a black coffee with ginger biscuits please, now hurry up." The boss ordered.

My smile disappeared, things began to get difficult between maintaining a healthy friendship with my neighbors, but also trying not to lose my cool as I served them and their work mates.

My optimism was slowly diminishing as each day passed, I felt guilty about it since Dan and Phil worked hard to get to the job for me. But I felt so drained. I was overworked, with hardly any breaks. Then my Narcolepsy had even more of an impact on me. I kept quiet about it as I needed the money to pay for the rent.

On the following Sunday I was working full time. I was having a break, it was almost six o'clock, I didn't finish until nine o'clock, then I would go home with Dan and Phil after their radio show. But my eyes began to feel heavy, I couldn't fall asleep now, but my body couldn't bear it no more. It was begging for sleep. I closed my eyes and found myself drifting off.

Dan and Phil arrived not long after, Dan looked round and couldn't find me.

"I'm going to get a tea, want one Phil?" He asked him.
Phil shook his head, "No I'm good thanks."
As he walked towards the empty staff room, he found me sleeping in the seating area. He smiled softly, then realised that I was meant to be working as he heard footsteps approaching.

"Hey... Liz." He said as he tapped my shoulder.

My eyes snapped open, I yelped, "W...What!"
I found Dan was sat next me, my face grew red. I was frustrated with myself for falling asleep, I must have seemed like I was slacking off.

"I'm so stupid!" I grunted, as I began slapping myself violently across my face.

Dan's eyes widened,"Hey what are you doing?!"
"I need to stay awake!"

"But its okay you've got-"
I cried as he held my arms down, "Yeah well I can't let anyone know, I don't want to lose my job."
"You haven't told the boss?" He said in disbelief.
"No because who would want to hire someone who can't even keep their eyes open!?"
"I think he will understand."
I glanced up at the clock, it was half past six. "Don't you need to get ready soon?"
He blinked before realising what I was talking about, "Oh yeah, well I came in for a tea."
"That's meant to be my job! I'm going to get fired!!"
I poured the boiled kettle, but accidentally scolded my hand as I missed the cups. I whimpered in pain, holding back the tears. Dan rushed over and took my hand as he ran it under a cold tap.
"But you've got to be careful too." He said.

I lowered my head, "You must think I'm an idiot."
"I think you're brave but very stubborn." Dan smiled as he met my eyes.

I quickly glanced back over to my hand, he was still holding it.

"My hand is okay now."

He moved his hand away from mine, before giving me an serious look.

"Tell the boss to shorten your hours, I hardly see you during the week now. Maybe do part time work instead." Dan advised.
I sighed,"Can I do that? I mean I'm not permanent."
"Well everyone has been raving about you. So don't worry." He reassured me.
A voice called for Dan, he began to leave.

"Thanks." I smiled humbly.

He winked as he took his cup of tea, "No problem."
