It's Life

Yes, I have a brother who's in a band.
No, I don't really care.
No, I don't see him.
No, I do not have sexual relations with him or anyone else in the band.
Ooh, I just ruined it didn't I? Yeah well, I'm in a bad mood. My parents died. My brother won't even show up. Like I'm having a bad enough day. Until of course he shows up. Then I'm having an even worse day.
That's right. Vic Fuentes. My older brother.
But I guess it's just life, right?

2. New Life

The car slowly rumbled to a stop and Vic took out his keys. We both just sat there- he had stopped crying. He turned around halfway so he could look at me and whispered, "are you okay?"

I shrugged. "My parents are dead," I replied. "What do you think?"

He sighed slightly and got out of the car, opening my door for me before I could reach it. He grabbed my suitcase out of the trunk and I gave him a small frown.

"What?" He asked.

"I can do that, you know."

"Yeah," he said. "I do know." He smiled at me and went to open the house door too. I rolled my eyes at him but I walked in anyway, shivering in the sudden air conditioning.

"You've been here for a little while then?" I asked, noting the empty bottles scattered around the floor and the skin mags.

"Sorry," he said quickly, shoving the most 'interesting' magazine under a chair. We didn't talk for a second before he cleared his throat and began to drag my suitcase up the stairs.

"Really, really, I can get that."

"But I have it." He told me with a stubborn tone. I frowned and followed him up the stairs where he flung my stuff onto a bed in a plain room.

"So," Vic asked once I was done surveying my new living quarters. "You want pizza?" I shrugged.

"I don't know, whatever is cheapest." He gave me a large grin which didn't seem to go with the tear stains on his face.

"I'll get the most expensive one I can find then!" He stated, turning sharply and going back down the hall and down the stairs.

"Oh, come on!" I shouted after him but I just heard a small laugh in response. I sighed and took a longer look at where I was. White walls. White sheets. White lamp. White door. I sighed and took out a picture of mom, dad and I together and set it on my nightstand with a small smile. Much better. I felt a few tears gather my eyes and the smile slipped. No, I'm fine. I braced myself and set a large smile.

"CAS!" I heard downstairs. "Common the pizza is here!" I leapt to my feet and galloped down the stairs and was immediately met with the smell of... Heaven. Vic handed me a plate with about six pieces, eyeing my small figure.

"I can't eat all of these." I told him. He just gave me a long look.

"Everyone can," he said finally, before heading out to the living room. I dumped half of the pieces back into the box before following him.

"What do you want to watch?" He asked quietly.

"Preferably not Bambi." I replied. He laughed slightly and put in a comedy. I laughed as I watched and only ate about half of one slice of pizza.

"Not hungry?" He asked me.

"Not really," I answered, and that was the truth. He sighed.

"Well, eat a big breakfast tomorrow okay?"

I nodded with a small yawn.

"Just go to bed, okay kiddo?" I nodded again and got up. I went half the way up the stairs before turning.

"Hey Vic?"

"Yeah?" He said, peering over at me.

"Thanks." I said.

"For what?" He laughed.

"For everything, I know you're really busy."

He shrugged.

"Nothing is more important than family."
