10. Chapter Ten

"Rapunzel?" Elsa asked, completely dumbfounded.

She still hadn't taken the girl's hand.

"But...but I always thought Rapunzel was a fairytale. A princess or something trapped in a tower with long golden hair."

The girl nodded.

"Yup, that would be me."

Finally, Elsa shook her hand cautiously.

"Well you don't exactly fit the bill.."

Rapunzel sighed.

"So I got a haircut." She said, shrugging.

"And how'd you get out of your tower?" Elsa asked, raising an eyebrow skeptically.

"I hitched a ride with a friend." Rapunzel responded, sitting back down at her vanity.

"But here's my question for you." She began, gesturing at Elsa with a hairbrush.

"If you're so suspicious that I'm not who I say I am, then how can you see me? The only way to do that is to believe."

Elsa leaned against a wall and folded her arms across her chest.

"I don't know...I guess I've just been..eager for something to believe in." Rapunzel tilted her head.

"You're lonely, huh?" She asked, reading Elsa's expression.

"You never realize how many people there are in the world until you're looking for just one." Elsa said, letting out a little laugh.

"I bet he's thinking that, too." Rapunzel remarked, giving a smirk.

Elsa gave her a confused look in return.

"Well, it is a boy, isn't it?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

Elsa sighed.

"It's that obvious?" She asked, and Rapunzel laughed and nodded.

"Who is it?" Punzie's eyes twinkled with excitement and curiosity.

Elsa took a seat on the torn up couch sitting against the back wall.

"Oh, you might have heard of him, his name is Jack Frost."

Rapunzel seemed to be caught off guard for a second, but she quickly regained her composure.

"Hm..yea, I've heard of him, I think. He's a guardian, right?"

Elsa gave her a puzzled look.

"A guardian? Well, I, uh, wouldn't really know..the last time we had a proper conversation was hundreds of years ago.."

Elsa said, looking down at her feet.

It bothered her to think Punzie might know more about Jack nowadays than she did.

Rapunzel raised an eyebrow.

"Hundreds of years, and you're still looking for him?" Slightly taken aback, Elsa scoffed.

"Of course! I love him." She crossed her arms across her chest defensively.

"Are you sure you still love him? He could've changed." Rapunzel countered.

"People don't change." Elsa said, rolling her eyes.

"Hey, my husband used to be a wanted thief." Rapunzel said, shrugging in return.

Elsa laughed in disbelief. "YOU have a husband?"

"Sure I do!" Rapunzel exclaimed.

"Well, I used to, anyway. He's probably long gone by now. Haven't seen him in..." she laughed sadly as she looked up at Elsa, " hundreds of years."

Elsa saw the light drain from Punzie's eyes for just a moment, but she quickly pulled herself together.

She gave Elsa a smile that would have left sadness undetected to anyone else, but Elsa had performed that same fake smile too many times herself.

She could see right through Punzie's act.

"Tell me about this husband of yours." Elsa said, smiling warmly.

"I..uh.." Rapunzel stuttered, clearly not used to someone else making the calls.

"How about I tell you what I know about your Jack instead. You should be more interested in that anyway, right?" Rapunzel suggested.

Elsa could also tell when somebody didn't want to talk, and she could see that clearly in Rapunzel.

"Sure. Tell me what you know." She allowed, nodding.

Rapunzel readjusted herself, clearly more comfortable with this topic.

"Well, recently he's become one of the Guardians, which is a group of crazy powerful immortals who protect the world's children. It sounds like a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me, but you have to be chosen by the Moon and all that and I'm kind of more on the sunny side of things. Long story. But anyway, he watches out for kids, makes it snow, does his job. Nothing to it really." She shrugged.

"But all the Guardians do is go on and on about what a responsibility it is." Rapunzel imitated some sort of soft high pitched voice and made quotation marks with her fingers.

Elsa laughed and realized the conversation was hardly about Jack anymore.

"You wish you were a Guardian?" Elsa guessed, and Punzie gasped.

"What?! Me? No. I'm way too much of a free spirit for that." She bragged, elegantly brushing her hair again.

"Well if anybody's a free spirit, it's Jack, and he still made it in." Elsa pointed out, but Punzie ignored her.

"Doesn't matter." She said, brushing the point aside with a swipe of her hairbrush.

Neither of them could help but giggle a little.

"Hey, you know, if you haven't got anywhere else to go, you can stay here.." Rapunzel offered, and their eyes met.

As Elsa looked into her eyes, she felt a sharp pain deep inside of her.

She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but it was as if Rapunzel reminded her of someone...someone in the back of her mind that she felt she'd never met, and yet they were so close.

"Is something wrong..?" Rapunzel asked, noticing Elsa's eyes drop to the floor.

"N-no. Thanks for the offer. I think I'll have to take you up on that." Elsa said, and she plastered her practiced smile on her face.
