The Dead Walking 4

(This is the 4th book in The Dead Walking series) I hate death. Its not even the fact someone died really its the after math when you look back and think "maybe I could have done something" and it just eats away at you until you cant take it anymore. And it seems no one really understands it, but you so you are left to face it alone. Just like you're left to face everything else alone now because we're all just monsters too.

14. That Was Nice Of You

I spin around and whip out my pistol. The sudden movement causes me to wince as my ribs poke my side. I prepare to shoot, but stop when I realize that it's not the group that has been searching for us. There's a boy that looks to be about 15 or 16, another boy that looks to be about 12 or 13, and girl that look about the same age as the younger boy. They hold their hands in the air when they realize that I have my finger on the trigger, ready to shoot.

The older boy has shaggy, dirty blonde hair, his face is sweaty and he has a tall, muscular build. He wears some old, cut up jeans, a dirty blue shirt and a brown, zip up jacket on over it. I see a pistol in a holder at his side and he has a machete in his hand. He has the kind of look to him that everyone at school would have died to date him. His blue stares me down as I examine the group.

The smaller boy has short, cropped hair with hazel eyes. He's not much shorter than me, but I can tell he isn't very strong, he has that "skinny build." He wears some baggy jeans and a thick black jacket. I can't tell what he wearing under it. He only has a pocket knife.

The little girl has light brown hair that comes down to her shoulder blades with dark blue eyes. She wears black leggings that are ripped at the knees with a  pink long sleeve shirt that says "PEACE" across it in rainbow letters. Oh god... I hope she isn't one of those girls that "can't get dirty... or are too good for everyone else" I can't stand them kind of girls. She only has a pistol.

"Uh, umm," The older boy clears his throat. My eyes snap back to him. "Are we just gonna stand here as you guys scan us?" he chuckles.

Great... another Mathew. Well he's gonna learn real soon that I won't put up with his crap. "No you're supposed to stand there while we check to make sure we don't want to kill you," I smirk.

I don't even have to look over at Carl to know that he is smiling. The boy nods. "Fair enough."

"What do you want?" I ask.

"Well we didn't mean to run into you guys. So we don't really want anything," he shrugs.

"Whatever. Then we'll be going," I tell him.

I grab Carl's arm and turn around and start walking away. "Wait..."

I figured he would talk once we started to leave. I turn around. "Ya?"

"Well we... oh god I can't believe I am actually saying this... we don't have anywhere to stay. Do you think we could... stay with you guys. At least for the night?" he asks.

I look over at Carl, waiting for a yes or no. He shrugs. "Why not."

"Fine. You can stay with us... but only for the night," I tell him.

He smiles. "Cool." I can tell he is trying not to act too happy about us letting them camp out with us.

"But before I feel comfortable will you sleeping at the same camp as us... I need to know your names."

He lets out a small laugh. "I'm Casey, this is Ben, and this is Aria," he tells me.

I nod. "Okay. Well, you guys are in charge of making your own beds. I only have one blanket big enough for us 4."

     "That's fine."

"I'll keep watch first. Just in case," I explain.

Carl looks over at me and I know what he is thinking just by the look he gives me. Yeah we may have to worry about walkers and the group searching for us, but now we have to keep an eye on people right here in our camp. He'll probably end up staying up with me. And that's fine because it can get boring, just sitting there all night long doing nothing.

I lay out the blanket and Melonie and Joel lay down. By now the sun has practically set and the air has an icy chill. I am thankful for the shirt that Carl's letting me borrow, but to be honest I am still freezing. I look over at Melonie and Joel who are shaking more than I am and I sigh. I lift the half of the blanket up that me and Carl usually lay on and flip over so that it's like a sleeping bag for them. They look up at me with confused eyes.

"You need it more than us," I shrug.

     "Are you sure?" Melonie asks.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," I assure her.

I see her body relax as she starts to fall asleep. She's out in seconds. Carl puts a hand on my shoulder and turn around to face him. "That was nice of you."

I smile. "And your point is?"

He smiles too, but shakes his head. "Nothing."

I roll my eyes. "Let me guess... you're staying up with me?"

    "How'd you guess?" he jokes.

I look over at Casey and see that all three of them are asleep on the bare ground. I'm actually kind of surprised that they all went to sleep so quickly, without anything to lay on or to cover up with. They must have been exhausted.

I walk over to a tree in the middle of our little "camp" and sit down beside it, letting it prop me up. Carl walks over and takes a seat beside me. He brings his knees to his chest and hugs them close to keep warm. I look up at the sky. I see the moon, shining bright in the sky. It's a full moon. The light drowns out some stars leaving the sky look kinda bare. It's nice to just sit here, looking at the sky, with Carl right beside me. It would be even better if it wasn't so dang cold. But we're safe for now and that's a lot.

I look over at Carl. He's looking up at the sky too. "It's pretty isn't?"

    "It is," he agrees.

"Do you think... do you think that there's really a place, somewhere up in the sky, where you go when you die?" I ask.

"I- I don't know," I admit. "I'd like to think there is. I mean I think so. Because... well what would be point of even being here, for even living, if there is nothing to look forward to after you've lived hell?" he asks.

"But what if this is all you get? You get this and then you're gone. Maybe we're supposed to look at it like... kind of like that saying "Live life to the fullest." What if that's exactly what we are supposed to do, live life to the fullest because it's all you got?" I think out loud.

He just looks at me for a moment. "Then I'd say we better start living it up," he smiles.

I roll my eyes, but smile too. "I don't know... I guess we'll never know till we die," I shrug.

"Isn't that a big price to pay? You have to actually die to find out whether you're gone or if you get to go some place better? By then it's too late to live your life," he says.

"It is. So that's why you should just do it anyways."

He doesn't say anything else. He scoots a little closer to me and wraps an arm around my waist, careful not to hold on to tight because of my ribs. I lay my head on his shoulder and snuggle closer to him, thankful for the extra warmth. "You can go to sleep," he tells me. "I'll keep watch. I'm not tired anyways.

I would argue and say that it's fine, but I can already feel myself falling asleep. My eyes droop shut and my body relaxes. I fall asleep in seconds.

Okay so... I need some CC... people haven't been commenting much or liking. So I made this rule awhile ago, but I haven't really enforced it much so I'm going to start now. If you guys want me to update often then I have to get at least 5 comment, a like, or a favorite. I did the comment thing for the people that have already liked and favorited so that you don't feel like I'm mad at you guys for not getting me more likes and favorites. Anyways I hope you guys liked the unexpected twist... I don't know if you were expecting the group searching for them to find them or not... but ya... plot twist! Lol. And since I forgot to add this and I'm too lazy to go back and change it... the dog is sleeping next to Casey :)
