The Dead Walking 4

(This is the 4th book in The Dead Walking series) I hate death. Its not even the fact someone died really its the after math when you look back and think "maybe I could have done something" and it just eats away at you until you cant take it anymore. And it seems no one really understands it, but you so you are left to face it alone. Just like you're left to face everything else alone now because we're all just monsters too.

25. Nobody's Safe

It isn't long before all the kids are awake. Melonie and Aria are practically drooling over the cat. Brian and Joel were petting it for awhile, but they got bored with it pretty fast.

"Carl... I'm going outside. I'll be back in a minute," I tell him. "We can leave after that if you want."

I start to walk away, but I hear Carl follow. "I'll be fine ya know," I say.

        He chuckles. "Yeah I know."

I roll my eyes and open the sliding glass door. A gust of cold air blasts me in the face, causing me to cringe. I step onto the patio and take in a breath of the icy air. I shiver a little, but keep walking. The yard looks different when it's covered in a layer of white. Once I reach the tree line I make my way through the even more scattered looking trees. I make my way past the last tree and out into the open. Even with no flowers, and barely any sun it's still one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Carl takes a stand beside me and I feel his arm wrap around my waist. I look up at the sky, half white, half gray. A little snowflake lands on my nose and a couple others in my hair.

"I can see why this would be your happy place," he comments.

"Yeah... but It wouldn't be the same without you."

I turn to my left and stand on my tip toes. His other arm makes its way around my waist and this time... it's me who leans in.

                                               * * * * * *

"Does everyone have their stuff?" Carl asks. Everyone nods. "Then lets go. We can't be out too late... it's cold enough now."

I throw my bag over my shoulders and position my weapons. I walk behind Casey who is at the front of the group. He opens the door, but steps to the side. "Ladies first," I can just make out a slight wink.

I roll my eyes and step outside. I hang back a little, waiting for Carl who has the cat. He is the last one out. "Here. I'll hold her," I suggest.

He hands her to me and I hold her close to my chest, trying to keep her warm which is probably useless because I'm not even very warm. She falls asleep pretty quickly.

"So how far is it from here to your guy's camp?" Casey asks.

"A couple of hours. About 20 miles... maybe a little less," I tell him.

"Thank god. I think this is the farthest I've ever walked in such a short amount of time," he says sarcastically."

"We've walked all the way from the prison to the camp in one day," Carl lets out a light laugh. "This is nothing."

      "Says you."

"No. Says you. You ran a whole mile without sweating a drop!" I exclaim.

"That's different. Running is different. And it was only a mile. I ran track, I did cross country, I played football, and I even tried soccer. I'm an athletic person, but I've never been a far distance walker," he rolls his eyes.

"Whatever. You're the most athletic one here so shush."

       Casey chuckles. "Yes, ma'am."

I shove him a little, but that only causes him to laugh.

"What do you think is going to happen when we get back? They're going to be worried... and now we come back with 5 new people. I mean it looks more like we went on a run looking for people," I laugh a little.

"I guess it doesn't matter what they think. I mean most of it wasn't our fault," Carl shrugs.

"But it is. Well... my fault anyways. If it wasn't for me we would have never been kidnapped," I point out.

"But aren't you glad we did. I mean look at all the people we found."

"Yeah. You found us. You guys are pretty damn lucky. I mean I'm a real catch," Casey jokes.

"Haha yeah I'm glad we found you guys. It wouldn't have been the same without you here to bug us. No, but really I am glad. You're not half bad," I say, honestly.

"To be honest I'm a little guilty for thinking you would feed me to a zombie..."

"Nah you don't have to feel guilty. At first we probably would have," Carl points out.

Casey shakes his head, but there's a smile on his face. "I just wish my dog was still here."

"Oh my god... I completely forgot about your dog! What happened to it?"

"When I stayed behind. He stayed with me. But I was the only one who made it..."

"I'm so sorry... I didn't even know..." I am at a loss for words.

"It's okay. He was old anyways. He actually kind of saved me. One of them lunged at me and he blocked me so he couldn't get me. That's how I got away," Casey says sadly.

I cant even reply. Really the whole group is speechless. "Yeah..." he says and keeps walking.

                                                  * * * * * * *

Sometime later I actually see a couple walkers up the road. The past couple of days It hasn't really felt like the ZA. I kind of felt normal... like I was safe. Being back out here just reminds that we're not okay. That I'm not safe. Casey's at the front again so he kills the 2 off with his machete. I sigh and keep walking.

"Izzy... IZZY!" Carl shakes my shoulder.

"W-what?" I look around realizing I had been day dreaming.

"Look!" he points up the road and I see what he's pointing at. We made it. This time we don't start running. We just speed up our walk a little. It's too cold and our bones are too stiff.

We just keep pushing. It feels like an eternity before we reach the parking lot. As we start toward the door I see it. the doors are busted down. I look over at Carl and see that his eyes are wide. So many emotions. Fear, confusion, anger.

"NOOOOOOO!" a women screams from inside. It sounds like Maggie.

        Then a gunshot.

        Nobody's safe. Nobody's safe. Nobody's safe.

HEY GUYS! Sorry for the crappy ending! So yeah... that's the end of this book! Like I said the next book is going to be about 4 hours long and its going to have a LOT more action and its really just going to be crazy. If you've seen THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 5 TRAILER then you'll understand a little better. Because it's going to be more like Season 5 than any other season so prepare yourself! No more kid stuff.

I would LOVE some more CC on this book so PLEASE comment and like and favorite... ya know the drill! So I've decided I am going to wait to publish the next book until this one gets 10 likes! So like it up!
