The Dead Walking 4

(This is the 4th book in The Dead Walking series) I hate death. Its not even the fact someone died really its the after math when you look back and think "maybe I could have done something" and it just eats away at you until you cant take it anymore. And it seems no one really understands it, but you so you are left to face it alone. Just like you're left to face everything else alone now because we're all just monsters too.

23. Competition

As the day progresses and the sun starts to warm the air it isn't as cold, but it is still cold. We must be getting winter now... which means... it would have already been my birthday. How could I have not realized that? So then I'm actually 16. That's weird to think about. For some reason I cant really imagine myself being 16. To be honest I still feel like I'm 12 and this has all just been 1 long ass year.

We walk some what slowly down the road. We're not in too big of a hurry. I mean yeah we do need to reach the house today, but it only took us a day to walk from the prison to WALMART so we should be good.

I shiver as we walk and my teeth chatter loudly. I feel Carl's arm wrap around me and he pulls me to his side. The warmth from his body instantly makes me warmer. I snuggle into him as we walk. It's now that I wish I had more than a quarter length shirt. I hold onto the tips of the fabric and slide my arms back up into the sleeves so my hands can get warm. Why cant that sun rise already?

       "Are you okay?" Carl asks.

      I nod. "Yeah, I'm fine. J-just cold."

"I'm sorry. We should have brought a jacket... I just didn't think it would be this cold," Carl shakes his head. "Is there anything I can do?"

      I shake my head. "N-no."

      "Here," Casey says.

I look up and see Casey holding out his jacket. I look over at Carl. Won't that be a little awkward? Me... wearing Casey's jacket? I shake my head. "Keep it. I'm fine."

Carl rolls his eyes and grabs it from him. "You need it," he insists.

I sigh and put my arms through the sleeves as Carl holds it up. It's like 2 times my size, but it's really warm. I look over at Casey and I automatically feel bad. I took his only jacket leaving him with just a tight gray t-shirt. "Are you sure?" I ask.

"Of course," he says and keeps walking. "So how much farther is this place?"

"We're probably about halfway now," Carl tells him.

      "Good. I'm tired of walking."

Carl chuckles, but doesn't say anything else.

                                                        *******

Sometime... around 4 I can see something in the distance. I can just make it out as a small house. THAT'S the house we need. I smile and nudge Carl's shoulder, but I already know he sees it too. "We're almost there. That house up there is the place we've talking about," Carl tells Casey.

Casey nods to himself. "How fast can you run carrying her?" he asks Carl.

Carl raises an eyebrow. "I don't... I don't know. Why?"

Casey chuckles. "Do you think you could run faster carrying her then I could?"

"Oh my God. What are you doing Casey? Why would either of you need to carry me?" I demand.

"We can get there a hell of a lot faster if we run," he points out.

"I can carry her. It's fine," Carl insists.

"Okay," Casey smirks and Carl shakes his head, with that... determined look on his face.

"I swear to god if you drop me trying to run faster you will NEVER see the end of it," I warn him.

Carl smiles. "Okkaayy," he says sarcastically. I walk over behind Carl and hop on his back. "Well I didn't really think this is what he meant by carry you..."

      "Yeah... and I don't care."

Even though I cant see his face I know he rolled his eyes.

"Alright... on the count of three..-"

"WAIT! When did this become a competition?"

"Right now. Okay so... 1... 2... 3... GO!"

Everyone starts running... except me. For awhile it's Carl and Casey in the lead, but then Brian starts to catch up and Carl slowly starts to fall behind. "Carl you can leave me here so you can win and I'll just walk," I tell him.

       "No. I've got this."

I roll my eyes and just hang on as he pushes himself a little harder. After a moment he is past Brian and Casey and him are neck and neck again. He's going to hurt himself. That is all that he is going to gain from this stupid competition. We are so close to the house now. No more than 50 feet. Carl just barely pulls ahead long enough to step onto the gravel before Casey. When he stops he is breathing heavy. I hop off his back and help him stand up. He just ran a mile... with me... on his back... against Casey. He must be a lot faster than I give him credit for.

"Nice job man," Casey shakes Carl's hand.

Carl is literally dripping sweat and Casey is just standing there... barely looking like he ran 10 feet. I already know... he let Carl win. I'll have to talk to him later about that. I look straight into his eyes and after a moment he rolls his so he must know what I'm saying.

"Alright... lets get inside before we all freeze to death," I say.

We walk up the driveway and up to the door. I turn the brown knob and step in. Even without heat it's about 30 degrees warmer. Everyone sighs in relief as soon as they step in. I can't stop myself from just collapsing to the floor. My ribs sting from hitting the wood floor, but I'm too exhausted to care... which is pretty bad because Carl just RAN with me on his back for a mile. I lay there as the butt of my gun digs into my back and my pocket knife presses into my hip. Casey rolls his eyes and sticks a hand out for me to grab. I take it and he helps me stand up. I walk over to the couch and sit down next to the left arm rest. I bring my knees up to my chest and wrap my arms around them.

Carl comes over and takes a seat beside me. He wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me closer to him. I rest my head on his shoulder as Casey starts a fire in the fire place using the left over wood. Once he gets it going he takes a seat beside Carl. I get the black blanket out and give it to the kids so they can lay on it. After a moment between the warmth of Casey's jacket, the warmth of the fire, and the comfort of Carl beside me, I fall asleep.
