Things Just Happen

This is a rant book, where I can just put on issues that I come across day by day, which'll help me, but hopefully you too :) x

27. Music

So people are being mocked for their music taste. They are put down because of it. It doesn't matter what type of music you listen to, you will always be targeted, and that's a horrible, horrible thing.

I personally am a band girl. I listen to All Time Low, Tonight Alive, There For Tomorrow (by the way, if anyone on here listens to TFT please talk to me because I don't know anyone who listens to them. I need a fangirl sister/brother for them), Bring Me The Horizon, Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance - you get the idea. I'm often faced with people from the pop community saying "Oh, you're such an emo, why do you listen to this emo music?". I listen to it because I like it. Are you listening to it with me? No. Leave me with my choice.

But it's not just the pop community. I'm faced with people from the metal community, or people from older generations saying "These guys don't even know what real screamo is. The stuff they listen to is so generic." Did I say I listen to "real screamo"? No. In fact, I don't listen to much screamo anyway (Before any of you start having a go at me, I know there is another word for screamo, but right now my mind has forgotten what that word is, so I'm using the word screamo until I remember what the word is. Probably in a few days). The screamo I listen to isn't like the stuff you're used to, I know that. But I don't mind that it's "generic" or what. I like it. I don't want to spend loads of time on that. I'm more of a punk/rock girl than I am screamo girl.

Then the punks and the rocks say "That's not punk or rock at all. WHat are you on about? Listen to some real punk/rock!" Okay. I don't care, okay? I don't care what genre it is, just leave me alone. I like this music. To you it isn't real music, but to me it is. To my ears, it sounds nice. I like this. Leave me alone.

The point I'm trying to make, is that you will be scorned at for your music taste even by those who listen to music of the same genre. Everything sounds different to everyone's ears. Don't tell someone that they're not listening to "real music". Real music is different to each and every person.

Another thing I hate is how different genres attack each other. The pop genre attacks other genres badly, always saying things like "Why can't you stop being freaks and listen to the radio? All you listen to is wispy, hippy stuff/Satanic stuff/ other stuff." No, can you not? People like different genres for different reasons, leave them alone.

But that's not the worst of it. There are genres that attack the pop community as well. I know for a fact that the rock/punk/metal community bashes up the pop community a lot. They're always posting things like "Our music has better lyrics and meanings than pop music". Actually, no. A lot of songs on the radio might have horrible lyrics, but there are so many pop songs that don't make it to the radio that have wonderful lyrics. For example, Taylor Swift's Never Grow Up. I don't care that I have a completely different music taste now, but that song will always be one of my favourites, simply because of the lyrics. There are so many songs that do have good lyrics, so stop picking out the worst lyrics in pop songs and comparing them to the best lyrics in rock/metal/punk songs. If you're going to pick out the worst lyrics by, say, Lil Wayne, then pick out the worst lyrics from Blood On The Dance Floor.

I also hate the way that people bash Directioners and the actual band. Although I may not like the music that One Direction makes, I respect the fact that they're actually making music, and most of all I respect their fans. So many people are like "Ew, One Direction are so bad, they're so gay". No, they're not. They're going on tour and making music that people like, which is a lot better than you're doing right now. And don't bash the fans. They have their reasons to like the band, maybe they helped the fan. Before you go on about "How have they helped the fan?", tell me, have you listened to every single lyric and every single song? No, because you hate them so much. There may be a song in there that a fan relates to and helped them get over a certain situation. And even if that's not so, and they just like them for the sound, then leave them be. To them, it's the most perfect thing ever. If you don't like them, fine. Express it, but express it nicely - or try to, like I tried to. If you love them, then that's great for you. I hope you get to see them live, and maybe even get to meet them.

Another thing is the whole "if you're a true fan you'd know this/you'd recognise this". No. If you're a true fan, you don't need to know every inside joke, or have watched every interview, or support every decision. You just need to care for the artists, and you just need to wish well for them. They're human beings, just like us. They make mistakes. they're far from perfect, so stop acting like they are. You need to accept them, love them, recognise their flaws, and love them more. If necessary, if they've made a bad decision, or they've done something that is bad like a crime or something, then you need to tell them that they didn't do a good thing - if you feel that's necessary. But to be a true fan, you don't need to know everything. You just have to wish them well and care for them.

Basically, if you want people to be nice to you about the music you listen to, respect other people's music taste. Don't be horrible about it.
