Amber Wilson is an average teenage girl that thinks she's on top of the world. Her parents finally let her go on a skiing trip in Seattle with her two best friends, Dylan and Julie. Then she gets captured by a vampire and changed into a vampire, and there's no going back. What happens when the vampires decide to keep her? Why does she want to die? What happens to Amber when the police investigate where she is? What happens when a boy that she's convinced is a monster changes all of that?

6. Numb

We run through the forest and I feel exhilarated. I ran faster then all of them, screaming and whooping the whole way. Before they caught up, I could drink my fill of blood and follow Lena's faint scent of Lime and Roses. Lena! I shout then I stop. The rest of them stumble behind me. Stop. I whisper gently. Look. I could tell Lena and Ryder knew we were there, but they didn't seem to care. Lena had her legs around Ryder's waist, and they were in a deep kiss. Let's go. Leslie whispers. I furrow my eyebrows and slowly follow them, glancing every now and again at Lena and Ryder.

Once we get back to the house, I didn't know what to do. I try to rack my brain for vampire facts. Then I sigh. What's wrong Amber? Derrick's arm was around me, and it felt.......wrong. I shake my head. When do we go to sleep? There's a beat of silence before everyone busts out laughing. I expect my blush to reveal me, but then I remember. Vampires don't have blood pumping in their veins, so they can't blush. You don't sleep, stupid. Seth rolls his eyes. I crinkle my brow. Ever? They shake their heads and I press my index and middle finger against my temple. I didn't ask for this. I burst out. They all look at me. I didn't want to be a vampire, I just wanted to be me. I wish my parents never let me go on that ski trip. They stare at me and I zip upstairs so quickly I skid a little when I reach a bathroom. I lock the door and break down into sobs, getting angrier that I couldn't even cry. Why does something like this have to happen to me? What did I do? I wanted to go to heaven when I died, and now I'm some mutant, bloodsucking freak. I start to hyperventilate, and someone knocks on the door. Hard. Amber, let me in. Derrick's voice is hard. No! My voice is still stopped up though. He bangs it, harder. I swear Amber Wilson if you don't open this door I will break it down. I slowly rise to my feet. I couldn't do that to their house already- I've barely met them. So I open the door and poise on the shower bar, holding myself and sniffing. He spots me instantly and closes the door silently. Amber. I jump down from the bar straight into his arms, burying my head in his shirt. I wanted to feel the thud of my heart against my hand, I wanted to feel my pulse, and for the first time I wanted a terrible headache so I could feel the blood pounding in my skull. But I'd never feel that again. He rocks me, murmuring condolences in my ear until I calmed down. I can't help it; I stick my thumb in my mouth. He softly strokes my hair. I'm so sorry. I look into his round Amber eyes and push my hand into his hair. He buries his face in my neck. I'm so happy I found you. He whispers. Then he starts to kiss my neck. When I don't push him away, he kisses my neck again, up to my jaw. This boy could be my key to surviving this. A growl of pleasure rips through my clenched teeth and he chuckles softly. They're coming. He barely says and I position myself to where I'm in his lap, sucking my thumb, when the door flies open. A blue electric current runs through Lena's fingers as she stares at me. When did Lena and Ryder come back? Her face was hard until she saw me and her golden eyes smoothed. Derrick helps me up and leads me up another flight of stairs, the family still huddled around the bathroom door. He opens a door to a dark room and closes it once I got in. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear nervously and stare at my feet. Derrick runs a hand through his dark brown hair and his eyes seem to glow. You wanna sleep in here? Until, you know we get your room fixed? Are you uncomfortable? He starts zipping around the room. I'll sleep on the couch. You're fine. My voice rings out like little bells and he glances up at me. Are you sure? I sit on the center of his bed. I nod slowly. You want me to sleep on the ground? I start laughing, and it sounds like hundreds of little bells. He takes off his shirt and I have to turn away to keep from staring. I'll.....change into this. I take a long red shirt out of his closet and get into the bathroom. My skirt was way too short now, and the shirt covered my butt, so I felt fine walking out. My hair spills over my shoulders and Derrick shyly smiles at me. I climb onto the center of the bed, leaning into the pillows. I run a hand through my hair. I can't believe we can't sleep. I sigh. He climbs into the bed next to me and a shark tooth hangs from his necklace and brushes my skin. I turn so I face him. I can't help it, and my hands find his arms, running the tips of my fingers over his biceps, then his chest. He grips my waist, staring deep into my eyes. Suddenly, he fits his mouth against mine. I move my mouth in sync with his, pushing my hands into his hair. Then he breaks the kiss, looking at me wide eyed. Was that.....okay? I bite my lip and nod. It's okay. He grips my shirt and flips us over so he's hovering over me, and he kisses me again.
