Zombie Street

This is a new Zombie Story for the competition about Zombie Awareness Week! Enjoy!

4. Meeting new People

Dear Diary,

The town house is loaded with goods. I spent the afternoon picking through the fridge, through the cupboards... we even found a basement stocked with goods! It was a surprise when we got down there though, because we found a little girl and her crazy mum trying to protect the food. We suspected they were dehydrated so Tegan stayed upstairs with the big gun and poured her a glass of water. They're getting on well, now. The basements been locked so were spending our night down here.

I managed to get a little bit of sleep. I slept beside Chelsea and the small girl. The small girl woke me up, though. I caught her sobbing into her sleeping bag. I sat up and wiggled over to her, and put a comforting arm around her shoulder.

"What's wrong?" I asked her, although I was pretty certain I already knew the answer. If there's anything I'm worse at than keeping BIG GOVERNMENT SECRETS, it's comforting people when they're upset.

"Daddy's dead," she hiccuped, and fell into another few sobbing fits. I let her sob into my dirty clothes for a while, and then I managed to rock her, and she started to drift off. Before she did, she asked "what's your name?"

"Jasmine," I replied softly.

"Jasmine," she giggled. "That's funny, because I'm Yasmin." After that, she wrapped her arms around me, and we both fell asleep.

Now I'm sitting with her, in the middle of the night, watching everyone as they sleep. They're so peaceful. I bet when they dream they forget the realism about what's going on. I don't. It haunts me in my dreams. That's the thing, though. I can't forget. I was the one who caused this. I have to be the one to fix it. But how?
