Problems

"Head in the clouds, got no weight on my shoulders"
~
When I was little, I thought life was perfect. But now, everything is a lie. I face things every single day ever since my mom died. About 80 percent of them involve my dad. He wants me to be something that I'm not, and it's stupid. I can't change myself, but in order to appease to him, I made this compromise with him. This compromise was worse than what he wants me to actually be. I've got 99 problems. But you, Ashton, won't be one.

24. I'm thinking life's too short

The three weeks that I didn't talk to Ashton were boring. Well, on a standpoint that he basically just said that he wanted to kiss me since freshman year. Did he have a crush on me at the time before he dated Amy?

I tried keeping what he told me out of my mind, but it's hard. No guy really liked me. Except for Michael, Luke, and Calum but they're my friends. Also Marlee and Luke have been hanging out a lot recently.

The week after Ashton practically confessed an old crush on me, and I don't know if he did still, I tried to see if I could get some hard facts. So during my study hall, I went to the history hall to talk with my honors world history teacher from freshman year, Mr. Bohr. His first year teaching at Placer was also my freshman year so he was now a familiar face. He liked me and Marlee because we were always interested in history.

I was 15 at the time so this was way before my dad forced me to work at the club.

When I knocked on his door, he kindly let me in.

"Mr. Bohr, I have a quick question."

"Sure Connor. What's it about?"

"Well...I've been hanging out with Ashton Irwin a lot lately..."

"Yeah..."

"And it was just last week he practically confessed that he had a crush on me, although I don't know if he did have one."

"I do remember you two were in the same class, but you would hang out with Marlee a lot."

"Because I didn't know him well."

"Is he still dating that one girl from your guys' sophomore year...what's her name?"

"He's not dating Amy anymore. They broke up in September."

"Okay, because I remember one day he came to my room asking for advice on women. And I only gave it to him because I have a sister." He's a bachelor.

"It was probably to ask her out."

"It was freshman year and he said it was to a girl in his class."

"Probably Mara."

"No it wasn't her. The bell is about to ring soon and I got a class next period so I best be letting you go."

"Alright. Thanks Mr. Bohr."

"Have a good day, Connor. Thanks for stopping by."

Well, that went pretty well.

The next two weeks, I would see him in the halls, but he would either be talking to some of his other friends. Last week was the beginning of the second quarter and it was boring as hell. But one day this week, I saw him reading the book I gave him for the bet.

However, today was more hectic.

It was Friday, but it was no ordinary Friday. My dad told me that next week, from this upcoming Sunday to next Sunday, he'll be in Los Angeles for a meeting with different companies on a huge inquiry that he can't miss. So this upcoming week, he won't be my asshole father. He'll be my actual working dad. A rarity.

Well that lifted up my spirit. But what happened during AP Gov. brought it back down.

I was into the classroom and people were giving me looks. I also heard some whispers about my name. Once I took my seat, I was hoping to enjoy a quick conversation with Michael, but instead I get a slap to the face.

From Amy.

She threw me to the ground, and kicked me. Continuously until Mr. Bruening walks in.

She did say something before that, but I couldn't remember.

Wait. Now I know.

She called me a bitch, slut, and a whore.

Like bitch, you don't even know that you're called that by the entire school.

As class was about to begin, I realized that I can't get up. And I can't breathe well.

That motherfucking bitch knocked the wind out of me.

"Miss Watson, is there any reason that you're on the floor?" Mr. Bruening asked.

"It's nothing, Mr. B." Amy said as if nothing happened. But luckily, as Mr. Bruening was a terrible teacher at times, he didn't take that excuse.

"Mr. Hood, Miss Hancock, take Connor to the nurse's office." He says before typing on his computer.

Calum and Odelia help me up off the floor and lead me to the office. This is the first time I've been to the office in any school since mom's final day, but of course the nurse's office has to be in the actual office.

"Connor?" I hear someone say. I look up slightly and see him.

"Hello Ashton." Odelia says, almost like she was speaking for me because God my back hurts.

"Hey Odelia." He gives a small smile. They got along back at Cal's prehomecoming party. Then his attention focuses back on me. "What happened?"

"Your ex-girlfriend happened." Calum snaps. That's when his eyes widen.

"You guys get back to Bruening. I'll take her." Ashton says extending an arm out for me.

"Oh, I'm still going with her. I got to explain to the nurse what happened because I was there." Cal counters as they both walk me to the office.

I was able to get the notes from Odelia, and Luke brought me today's chemistry notes. I stayed in the office until I got word that I can leave.

But I wasn't ready to face the student body now. I was lucky that it was only the wind got knocked out of me and I got a few minor bruises, but still.

Waiting outside in the waiting area of the office was the person I was probably expecting but I didn't know if I should've expected him.

Ashton.

"I talked Amy, and she claims she didn't do anything." Was the first thing that he said when I got out of the nurse's office. "Then she tried to get me to skip my AP government class to hook up with her. Does she not know what 'we are finished' mean?"

That earned a laugh from me. "Probably expected her to lie." I say looking down.

"I'm sorry I've been ignoring you the last couple of weeks..." He all of the sudden states. "I shouldn't have done that. But...I guess I was thinking a lot lately. And reading."

Oh yeah, he's reading A Tale of Two Cities. I need to make questions for that soon.

"It's okay." I sigh.

"No it isn't." He stops in front of me. "Look, Connor, what I said three weeks ago...yes I did have a crush on you freshman year. The only issue was that I paid no attention to getting to know you...but three years later, I finally did. I know I'm an ass at times, but I like you. You're...god I can't describe how awesome you are.

I look at him with wide eyes. No guy, except the guys in my friend circle, had ever talked about me like that. Suddenly my mind is somewhere else when I feel something touch my mouth.

Ash's hand.

"I know you want to kiss me, but I still have to finish this book and answer those questions and repeat that process one more time." I open my eyes to see him with a smirk on his face.

I move my face away, blushing a deep red, and I run to my locker to grab my keys and head to the college for English class.

What's going on with me?
