Problems

"Head in the clouds, got no weight on my shoulders"
~
When I was little, I thought life was perfect. But now, everything is a lie. I face things every single day ever since my mom died. About 80 percent of them involve my dad. He wants me to be something that I'm not, and it's stupid. I can't change myself, but in order to appease to him, I made this compromise with him. This compromise was worse than what he wants me to actually be. I've got 99 problems. But you, Ashton, won't be one.

2. A library mishap

I open the door to the library and walk inside. I was returning a book I had finished and needed a new one, so I stop here everyday after school.

Miss Malone, the librarian who looks very young, looks up from her work. "Good afternoon, Miss Watson." She says.

"Good afternoon, Miss Malone." I reply.

"What brings you here today? Even though you're here everyday at this hour." She asked.

I stop in front of her desk and hand her the book. "I came to return this and check out another one."

She takes the book from my hand. "The Fault in Out Stars by John Green. The most popular young adult novel out so far. Did you enjoy it?"

"Enjoy it? I cried at the end when Augustus..." I stop before my tears exited my eyes.

"I get that reaction from everyone who checks this out." She understands what I went through while reading. Audrey, one of the maids, had to fetch a box of tissues for me when I got to that chapter.(AN: if you know which chapter I'm talking about, I cried)

"Well, you know I have an opportunity for you." She says before I walk into Heaven.

"What?" I ask.

"Since you've been coming here for a long time, I was thinking maybe you can work here after school from Monday to Friday? You can do homework and then when you're done you can help me. I could sure use some extra hands. I know it's your senior year and you need to apply for colleges, so this will look good on your application."

My face lights up." Oh my god, Miss Malone! Thanks so much! I'll take it!" And then I realize what I completely forgot, "Except I can't do it Fridays. I also can't do Saturdays but I can do Sundays."

She shows a concerned face, and then realization. She knows about my situation with my dad and she's the only person who isn't Audrey or Hanna, the other maid at home. Those three are the only adults I've told about my real life in my family.

"Well, how about you look around to see what you like and then you can start tomorrow. Okay?" Miss Malone asks. I nod as I grab my backpack and walk towards the different sections of books.

Every time I check out a book, I chose a different genre. I chose out of the teen fiction area last time, so I move down to classical novels. I skim through the array of books and come across one that I haven't read yet. "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. I think I might've seen this in my mom's stash of old books before we gave them away after her passing.

I pick the book off of the shelf and walk towards the counter.

That was when I was bumped into from my side and I fell to the ground.

I propped myself up onto my elbow and pushed myself up from the ground, brushing my hair out of my face. I look ahead of me and see who knocked me over.

The boy had dark curly blonde hair and eyes that were a hazel color. The Nirvana tank, ripped jeans, and red bandana he was wearing may have given me a bad insight on him, but I don't know.

"I'm sorry." I apologize, making it seem like it was my fault.

He just shrugs it off. He kneels down and picks up the book. He hands it to me and I take it. As I walk away, I hear a voice ask, "Why 'Little Woman'?"

I turn around and it's the same guy who bumped into me.

"Because I've never read it before, that's why." I reply back.

"Okay." He states and walks away. I begin to walk back to the counter when I saw someone from my school. It was my Chemistry lab partner, Luke Hemmings.

"Hey, Connor Watson." He says. "What brings you to the library after school?"

I don't see him here a lot, but Miss Malone knows his name.

I roll my eyes and answer, "I'm here every day after school. I'm here for an hour or two and then I go home." Although I wish I didn't go home after school.

"So you work here?" He asked again as we walked up to the counter.

I shake my head no, "but Miss Malone just offered me a job today and I took it!"

"Connor, that's great!" Luke cheered, and then suddenly stopped. "Oh, shit."

I grow concerned. "What?" I asked.

He runs over to the nearest bookshelf and hides. "Can you check my book out for me? Ashton Irwin is here and I don't want him to see me." He hands me his book and runs.

"Wait, Luke!" I call, trying to stay quiet. But he ignores me.

"Who was that?" Someone behind me asks. I turn around and it's the same guy who bumped into me earlier.

"None of your bullshit." I reply walking up to the counter to check out for me and Luke.

"You know you can just reply with a simple 'it's yada yada yada'." He says walking behind me as I reach the counter.

I just ignore him and hand mine and Luke's book to Miss Malone. "One of them is Luke's." I tell her. She nods and checks them out. They were due back in two weeks, but I know I'll be back tomorrow.

"Luke who?" The guy asked.

"Skywalker." I sarcastically answer, "He's the one that ran away because he saw Darth Vader, who is also his father. And he didn't want his other hand cut off with a light saber."

He smirks. "Alright, I know you're talking about Hemmings."

I roll my eyes. My phone buzzes and I look at it.

From: Audrey the maid "Hi. Your father will be home any minute. So might want to leave now."

My dad hates it when I go to the library. He thinks I should "leave the books for school purposes and live your life like a normal teenager. Like go to parties, get drunk, have sex, do drugs".

After he said that, I gave him my "are you trying to fuck up my life even though you already are and ruin my goals of getting into a good college and to get a good job" look.

"Okay, I really don't care about you right now. But I got to go." I tell the guy putting away my phone and exiting the library. I open my car, hop inside, turn it on, and pull out of the parking lot heading towards hell number two.

I mean home.
