Wonderstruck

Do you ever just see a beautiful stranger? Not just a stranger that looks nice, but a really beautiful stranger who just captures you with the way they look and the way they act and makes you think about them at 2 am. A beautiful stranger that leaves you wonder struck and makes you somehow want to see them again and be with them forever yet at the same time, make you want to stay away from them so they remain this mysterious beautiful person that's in the world that would never hurt you.
I should have gone with the latter.

Ethan's point of view

I'm really nice to her that night. Not that I'm not nice to her usually, but I try to be really thoughtful and part of being thoughtful is just shutting up so I don't annoy her while she tries to think things through. I keep my arm around her though because it seems to make her feel better. Even though she isn't speaking very much at all, she's telling me how she is without meaning to. She's stressed. She can't stop fidgeting. I lie there and watch TV and she keeps moving around as she thinks, either wrapping her arms around me or resting her head on my stomach or fiddling with my hand.

"Are you alright?" I chuckle as she sighs, sitting on my lap.

She looks at me for a moment and then snaps out of her daze with a small laugh. "Sorry."

"No need for an apology." I smile, shifting her weight a little so she's closer. "Wanna talk about it?"

She shrugs. "I'm okay."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah." she sighs heavily, leaning her head on my shoulder. "Pretty exhausted but okay."

We turn the couch into a bed and she turns to face me.

"It's times like this I'm just so happy to have you." she says. "You're awesome, you know that?"

"Yeah I know." I wink. "Get some sleep, Rosy."

"I'm not tired anymore."

I laugh. "Rosy."

"Really. I just wanna stay up and talk with you."

"About what?" I ask, genuinely curious.

She shrugs. "Anything that isn't important right now."

I smile, stroking the hair out of her face. "Okay. Let's stay up and bitch about people to no end."

She laughs, happily. "Yes! I'm so down for that."

We do just that. She bitches about all the mean people in her year at school, I bitch about all the airheads at uni that are annoying me. We're not the type of people to gossip but it was kind of refreshing.

She falls asleep while I'm telling one story but I don't mind. I've learned that sometimes I've just got to be there for her and nobody else, not even myself. She'll never ask that of me and it will never have to happen often, but sometimes that's all I can do.

I find that I can't even sleep that night because it's one of those nights where I'm just there for her. I just lie awake and think and watch her sleep however creepy it sounds. She wakes up in the morning and smiles at me. She seems refreshed.

"Morning." she kisses my cheek. "Nice to see you."

"Lovely to see you." I smile, getting up. "The hot water isn't working at all so I'm gonna head to uni early to see if Adam will let me have a decent shower in his dorm. Are you alright getting to school?"

"I'll walk." she nods, lying back down to go to sleep again.

"You're not going to have time to walk if you don't get up, Rosy." I smile at how oblivious she is when she's sleepy. "Come on, get up."

"I'll just stay home."

"You have that exam, you can't stay home."

She groans. "The point of living with your boyfriend is that he doesn't act like your parents."

I know there's no hope of getting her to school by herself so I pick her up with some of her clothes as well and put her in the back of the car. I didn't think it was possible for someone to be such a heavy sleeper, but she sleeps for the car journey and she doesn't wake up when I carry her to Adam's room and set her down on the floor. He frowns.

"Did you kill her?" he asks.

I stare at her in wonder. "No. She's just sleeping. I couldn't get her up for school. Can I use your shower?"

I do and when I get out of the shower, somehow she is up and ready and wide awake. I'll never understand that girl's sleeping habits.

"Ready?" I ask her, grabbing my keys.

She nods, fist-bumping Adam goodbye and she goes to wait in the car. Adam grins.

"She's so awesome, dude." he says, almost proudly.

I nod, feeling proud of her. "I love her. It's kind of a lot of work but I love her."

He nods smiling. "I know what you mean. It's the same with Nicole."

I laugh. "See you in class, man."

"See you later."
