Wonderstruck

Do you ever just see a beautiful stranger? Not just a stranger that looks nice, but a really beautiful stranger who just captures you with the way they look and the way they act and makes you think about them at 2 am. A beautiful stranger that leaves you wonder struck and makes you somehow want to see them again and be with them forever yet at the same time, make you want to stay away from them so they remain this mysterious beautiful person that's in the world that would never hurt you.
I should have gone with the latter.

I'm walking along a bridge like walkway in a new castle that Saturday, just looking around. I look out at the view ahead and I can see a village in the hills and the main road just before that. I imagine whatever royalty owning this castle and looking out and just seeing hills and flowers and fields and knowing that it was all theirs. I can't imagine owning so much. It's not that my family is poor or struggling with money at all. But we're only just not poor so I don't ask for anything. I get things sometimes, but I never ask. Rain does the asking and Noah gets a lot of things. There's nothing I need really. I want plenty but there's nothing I need so I just keep quiet.

I hear somebody approach me and sigh heavily. "Rain I swear to god, you come near me with that sword-"

I shut up. It's him. It's the boy again. I'm kind of disappointed because I guess now his family drag him out to castles every Saturday which is not only really tragic for him but also means that now we're going to see each other regularly and he's going to become a thing. However, I'm kind of pleased because on the off chance that this would happen, I'd attempted to look nicer.

He raises an eyebrow, not quite smirking but also not quite just smiling.

"I'm not Rain but I'm intrigued as to what would happen if I did come near you with plastic weaponry." he says, leaning on the side of the walkway we're on with his back to the view. I carry on facing the view but I look at him.

"Well that's for me to know." I smile, having to squint a little because of the sunlight.

He laughs. "So Rain is your little brother, huh?"

I take a deep breath. "Unfortunately."

"And the baby?"

I smile on the inside but just look out at the view normally. "She's mine."

I see his eyes widen from the corner of my eye. "Oh! Oh wow... I mean, she's beautiful!"

I laugh. "She's my baby sister. I'm only fifteen."

"I thought you looked a little young." he says. I love his voice. He says things with real tone behind the sentences, like everything he says is exactly the point he's meaning to make. "What's her name?"

"Noah."

A corner of his mouth rises a little. "Noah and Rain, huh?"

I smile and he lets his laughter out. "I know, I know."

"And what's your name?" he asks, turning to face the view. "Boat?"

"Trust me, I've been making that joke to myself since she was born. But no, my name's Rose."

"I'd go for Rosy, myself."

I frown but smile at him, afraid that he said something funny but I just missed the joke and now I'm going to look dumb. Apparently that's not the case because he explains.

"More syllables than Rose. So whatever somebody's feeling towards you, if they say you're name, they get to get their point across more."

I laugh. "I'm not sure I get what you mean but sure. What's your name?"

"Ethan." he smiles holding out his hand. I shake it, trying to ignore how it feels. "So do your family bring you to a different castle every Saturday?"

Before I can answer, my mum is calling me over. She hasn't looked over. If she had looked over, she'd let me carry on talking to Ethan. I try my hardest not to sigh as I look at him again.

"I'd better go." I say.

"I didn't get the answer to the question." he says.

"Well I guess you'll have to find out."

"How?"

"Well see if I show up at a castle next week." I say as I start walking away.

"I think we're going to Peveril Castle next week." he grins. "I'll see you there."

"Maybe." I smile and turn around fully, jogging over to Noah.

I dare to glance back to see him chuckling, turning back around to look at the view.
