7. The Room Where Everything is Hidden

The Room Where Everything is Hidden

Naturally, Anna couldn't help but wonder why Hazel was showing her this room.

"Hazel, why are we here?" she inquired, echoing the question spinning around her mind. At first, silence lapsed on, and Hazel continued to delve deeper and deeper into the room. Looking around, Anna noticed the most random things: books stacked up, gathering dust by the second; large mahogany cupboards at every turn, some empty and some crammed to the brim with useless things; instruments, violins with broken strings, trumpets snapped in half carelessly; and a whole assortment of other things nobody would seem to ever want. Whatever could they be doing, wondering aimlessly in a place like this?

After another silence that seemed to be going on too long, Hazel at last explained what she was doing.

"Look, it isn't safe to speak anywhere else, okay? I know some of the Professors like to roam the halls at night, including Filch and that vile cat of his. Nobody else in the castle knows about this place." She paused, looking around uncertainly, then carried on. "Not that I know of, anyway. This room is hidden, and trust me, you can't come across it on accident." Anna looked at Hazel with plain confusion. "Anna, I'm a Metamorphmagus."

When Anna spoke, her voice emitted a strange, high-pitched sound. "I know that now!" She paused to cough her voice back to it's original state. "But how did you turn into the object?"

"That's the part I need to talk to you about. I thought we could all turn into objects, us Metamorphmaguses? And now you're telling me it's only me who can?" Hazel seemed genuinely panicked.

"Well I don't know!" exclaimed Anna in frustration. She could feel her face heating up. Anna had never been sure what to do in these types of situations. "What does it matter, anyway?"

"I can't tell you." Hazel appeared to be on the verge of tears. Anna had never seen her so weak.

Without saying anything, Anna left.

Hazel wasn't sure why she was so stressed. It's not like anything would happen to her if they found out she could change into objects! She bit her lip anxiously, replaying the events in her mind. She kept telling herself that she was overreacting, that Anna wouldn't tell anybody - but she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd made a huge mistake in exposing herself to her, even if it was just one person.

Her footsteps echoed unexpectedly loud as she climbed the staircase to the Gryffindor common room. She tried to be quick and light on her feet, in fear that Filch would come and take her to Professor Dumbledore. The last thing she needed was a detention right now.

After what felt like forever, Hazel reached the Fat Lady's portrait. Her figure was slumped in the frame, her eyes flickering.

"Excuse me?" Hazel hissed impatiently. The Fat Lady jumped, and glanced around in alarm until her eyes narrowed on Hazel.

"Ah, you again! You better hope I don't tell Filch about you, waking me up in the dead of night as you've been wandering the castle!" she said, smoothing out her huge gown.

Hazel mumbled the password irritably, and rolled her eyes as the portrait swung open. The Fat Lady was still muttering her annoyance as the portrait closed, sealing off her words. Hazel glanced around at the deadly quiet and made her way up to her room.

Charlie Weasley waited until Hazel's footsteps had faded before stepping out of the shadows in the Room of Requirement. He'd had no idea anyone else knew about this place - Bill had only told him about it so he could practice Quidditch in peace without being barked at for owning a broom as a first year. He wasn't in the mood for Quidditch after what he had just heard.

He glanced around in the eerie silence of the Room. If Hazel, a first year, had found this place so early on, what's to say no-one else had? His knuckles white as he gripped his broomstick, she marched out of the Room.

There had to be more to it than Hazel had been telling Anna - why else would she be so bothered? Charlie was so distracted by the questions that he didn't even bother feeling guilty about eavesdropping. He promised himself he wouldn't tell anyone - but he would have to ask Hazel what was going on.

He faced the floor as he paced back to the common room, questions tripping over themselves in his head, when he walked head first into a solid wall. He squinted up at the wall, and noticed it was breathing.

Charlie had walked into none other than Professor Snape.
