2. Hogwarts First View

~ CHAPTER TWO ~

Hogwarts First View

The train station was filled with the hustle and bustle of luggage and "Ooh"s and "ahh"s of the first years, who were seeing Hogwarts for the first time. Hazel sighed. The amount of times she had emerged from the Hogwarts Express and marvelled at the castle was innumerable.

Anna popped out from behind her.

"Wow!" she breathed in awe. "It's so big." Anna turned to Hazel anxiously. "Do you think we'll get lost?"

Hazel shook her head, then searched for an explanation. "I'm sure we'll learn."

A great looming figure emerged from the smoky substance escaping the engine.

"First years, c'mon! First years, this way, now!" he was yelling. Hagrid, the Hogwarts Gamekeeper, always took the first years on the boats to Hogwarts instead of the Thestral-lead carriages. Hazel dodged through the crowd towards him, Anna in her wake.

"WOW!" yelled Anna in astonishment. Hagrid, being a half-giant, was double the size of an average man. His bushy beard was full of bits of old rotting food and his beetle-like eyes crinkled in a smile at the gathering of small people huddled, trembling, around him.

"This way then!" He swung his great arm in the air, welcoming the first-years to follow him. They shuffled along awkwardly in a huddle, as though they might be attacked if separated.

"Look at the size of him!" mumbled Anna sceptically. Hazel turned to her.

"Anna, he's half giant, he can't help it," Hazel said, defending her friend - although, Hagrid didn't know he was her friend.

"Sorry," Anna muttered defensively. "How do you know, Hazel?" She wasn't being nosy, just pure curiosity.

"Er..." Hazel searched her mind for an answer. "My mum used to come here when she was young. She told me about Hagrid."

Anna nodded, seeming convinced by the story. Hazel let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd taken in.

    Finally, they reached the boats.

"Hop on!" encouraged Hagrid, and lolloped onto the largest boat at the very front. All the other first-years cowered uncertainly - Hazel clambered confidently onto the boat and steadied the swaying with well-practised hands.

Anna watched Hazel, her brown eyes wide. Mechanically, she leaped on easily, and the boat towed away with all the other first-years.
