She has the added issues of death and family riding on her shoulders.

13. Thirteen

I wake up in Harrison's bed, naked. I gather the bed clothes around me and look around for Harrison. He is not there. I get up, still holding the bedding, and grab my clothes. I rush back to the bed and start to get dressed under the covers. Harrison enters. "I thought you'd never wake up!" He says, kissing my forehead. II smile and finish getting dressed. I push the covers off me and get out of bed.

"Breakfast?" Harrison asks. I nod and he passes me some butter and toast and a croissant and three hash browns. "Hell of a lot for breakfast!" I say, laughing. Harrison sits down next to me. "Why? Don't you want it?" I laugh and pull the plate closer to me, out of Harrison's reach. He kisses my cheek and gets up to leave.

"Where are you going?" I ask.

"A meeting with all the mentors."

"Send my love to my dad, won't you."

"I will!"

"Oh, and don't beat up Clese!" Harrison laughs and winks at me. I wave goodbye, and he is gone. I pick up the photo he gave me and put my jacket on and leave.

Eight weeks later I stand in training. Knife throwing. I grip the knife handle and prepare to chuck it at the board. Suddenly, I feel a sharp, aching pain in my stomach. "Ah!" I mutter, rubbing my stomach. I think that it is just a stomach ache.  I trough the knife and hit the target. The pain comes back, but more violent, it hurts so much. I squat down on the ground holding my stomach. I squeeze my eyes shut and sit there in my own world for a while. I feel a hand on my shoulder and open my eyes. I see Harrison.

"Dani, are you OK?"

"It hurts so bad!"

"Dani, I'm gonna take you to the clinic, OK!"

I nod and Harrison wraps his arms around me and lifts me off the ground. He runs with me in his arms clinging onto his T-shirt. He kicks open the doors in the way and always keeps his arms round me. The pain fades in and out. I wrap my arm around my stomach and squeeze it tight. Like that's gonna help!

We arrive at the clinic. Harrison kicks the door open and lays me down on the soft chairs. I let go of his T-shirt. He walks over to the reception. "I need a medic, quick!" He says. The receptionist nods. "Under what name?"

"Her name is Eaton, mine's Barnaby!"

The reception nods and starts typing.

"Dr. Eloise Barnaby should be free!"

Harrison's mum is Eloise Barnaby. Harrison nods and the receptionist starts dialing on the phone.

"Eloise, your son and his girlfriend wish to see you. Danielle needs medical attention."

The receptionist puts the phone down and Harrison sits next to me to wait for his mum. She enters. Tall, slim, dark hair and sharp blue eyes, just like Harrison. She smiles at us. Harrison gets up and kisses her cheek. "It's Dani," He says to her. Eloise looks down at me and kisses my forehead. I've known her as long as Harrison and she is like my second mother. "Can you stand?" She asks. I nod and slowly push myself up. Eloise puts her arm round me to support me. "Harrison wait here," She says, "I'll see Dani alone."

Eloise takes me into her room and sits me down. "What's wrong Dani?"

"I had this really bad pain in my stomach out of nowhere."

"Has it happened before?"

"OK Dani, I'm gonna take you so we can do an MRI." I nod and she helps me up and supports me like she did before. We walk into a white, clean room with a big machine in the middle.

"Do you have anything metal on you?" She asks. I nod and take out the two knives in my pocket, the lighter and I take off my jewelry. Eloise lays me down on a long tray attached to the machine. She slide the tray into a long tube and flicks a switch. Lights come on in the tube. I wince because of the brightness. A beam moves up and down my body.

After a while it stops and the lights go out. Eloise slides the tray out of the machine. I sit up. "Any news?" I ask. Eloise nods, gravely.

"What is it?" I say worried. Eloise helps me up and takes me to the computer. On the screen is my X-ray. She points to my stomach and looks at me. "What? I don't see anything!" I say. She shrugs and takes a deep breath. "Dani, you're about two months pregnant!" I touch my belly.

"What?" I say, shocked.

"That means you can't carry on initiation."

"I don't care! I'm going to, whatever you say. I don't have to tell people!"

"Dani, you'll be able to tell soon. I'd get it over and done with before people start rumors!"

"But, how?"

"Well, yes. But still we..."

"These things happen, Dani, honestly, there is another way out of this."

"Abortion? No! That's cruel, so cruel!"

Eloise nods and shows me out. I hug her and walk over to Harrison. We kiss and leave the clinic our hands interlocked. Just like we're married. I think. I take my hand away from his and put it close to my chest. "Dani?" Harrison puts his arm round me and I move away from him. "Dani what the hell?" I hang my head.

"Harrison, it was bad and good news."

"What happened?"
"I'm two months pregnant Harrison!"
