9. Nine

Harrison kicks his apartment door open. He lays me on his bed and strokes the hair out of my face. "It'll be OK!" He says. I don't know why but I begin to laugh. I place my palm on his cheek. "Harrison, I have two broken limbs! How can it be OK?" I laugh again and he smiles at me. "I'll sort you out!" He says. He leaves the room, I presume to get medical equipment.

He re-enters holding dressings, bandages and the like. He comes over to me and starts nursing me. He starts on my leg and I don't watch him I just close my eyes. I feel his hands against my arm now. I keep my eyes shut. After a while I slowly open one eye. He looks up at me and smiles. I smile back at him and lean forward so my mouth rests against his ear. "Harrison," I whisper, "I- I love you!" I take myself away from him and look at his face. His smile wavering, his cheeks heating up. He leans towards me and his lips touch mine. Do I trust him? How can I after Clese? But, I can. Because I love him.

I wake up the next morning, my arm and leg in a plaster cast, my head resting on Harrison's chest. He is already awake and reading. I slide myself up so I can see the pages of the book. He looks down at me and kisses my forehead. He reaches around me and his hand sits on my shoulder. I lean my head against his shoulder and read the words he reads. We sit there for a while, silent. He eventually shuts the book and puts it down on his bedside table. He slips out of bed and goes to the mirror. He begins to shave. "We'll have to get you a wheelchair if you want to go out and I'll get you your stuff from the dorm later," He turns round and looks at me uncertainly, "That is if you want to stay here!"

I smile at him, "Of course I do!" I say. He turns back round again and finishes shaving.  He gets changed into training gear. "Do you want me to get all your stuff?" He asks as he stands by the door. "Yeah!" I say. He walks out, gently shutting the door behind him.

"You should have seen Gemma's face this morning!"

"She was so sadistic!"

"But we totally got her back for it!"

"Yeah and then she like contorted and was making snake noises!"

"And I smashed her in our fight!"

My friends stand in a circle reporting on their day. I smile and laugh as they tell me of the events from the day, but secretly, I am wishing I was there too. Harrison enters. I sit up. "Harrison!" I call across the room. He looks round at me and waves. I nod at Bee-tee, she knows what to do.

"Oh my god! Harrison!" She runs across the room and grabs his arm. He turns round. "Dani is having these really bad pains in her leg!" Harrison comes over behind her and barges through the crowd to me. "Are you OK?" He says. I smile and nod.

"Yeah I just wanted to talk to you!" He sighs in relief, I continue, "I was just wondering if I could go out with this lot tomorrow, in the wheelchair!" He nods and ruffles my hair. I give him a look that says not here! And he nods and leaves me with my friends.

Harrison brings me soup on a tray. I sit in bed and spoon the hot liquid into my mouth. He sits at the table next to me. Once I have finished he takes the tray out and sits down next to me on the bed. He takes my hand his and rubs his fingers up and down my bones. I smile at him and kiss his cheek.  I lean back, so my head rests on the soft pillow. Harrison slips down next to me. My head falls onto his shoulder. His hands reach for my hair. He takes a couple of the wavy golden strands and twirls them round his finger. "Who could have thought," He says, "Dani Eaton, most popular kid in the whole of Dauntless, my girlfriend!" I don't know what to think of it.

"Why?" I ask, "Why me?

"You say that like it's a bad thing!"

"I don't know whether it is yet!"

"Because you are wonderful!"

"You are clever, selfless, kind, honest, peaceful and brave!"

Does he know? How could he? I smile at him and lean forwards. Our lips touch. Warmth rises up inside me. He pulls me closer. I wrap my good arm around him. I feel his hands running up my back and I place mine on his face. I cup his cheek and we stay there. I wish I could stay there forever.

There is a knock on the door. Harrison pulls himself from me and sighs. He gets up and walks over to the door. He opens it and I see my dad there.  "I am here to see Dani!" He say. Harrison steps back allowing dad to enter. He runs over to me and embraces me.

"Are you OK honey!"

"Yeah!" I nod, "It'll be fine in a couple of weeks. I'm gonna go in a wheelchair to training tommorow any way."

Dad strokes my hair, "My brave girl, my brave, brave girl!"
