20. Giving Thanks

I was sitting in the passenger seat of Vanessa’s car as we made our way to the airport. It’s the day before Thanksgiving, so we have an earlier flight to catch. I was sleepy the whole trip there but tried to stay up so I could sleep during the flight.

To help me stay awake, she started a conversation. “So, what are you going to do when the baby gets here?”

“Well, I’m going to probably get a bigger place before he is born and -” I was interrupted.

“He?” she raised an eyebrow. I just shrugged my shoulders.

“I don’t know, I feel like it’s going to be a boy,” I explained as I rubbed my now noticeable bump.

“What are you going to name him?” she asked, sarcastically saying him in the process. I thought about it for a moment.

“Hm… I really like the name Aiden, but I also like Mason,” I felt the little one move at the mention of the name Aiden.

“And if it’s a girl?” she tested.

“Probably Luna.” By this point, we had pulled into the airport parking lot and made our way inside. Once we were seated on the plane, I quickly drifted to sleep.

I had a nice night as I spent it catching up with my mom and siblings. It feels nice to be back home and surrounded by family. I was met with a lot of questions as well, but I soon grew tired so they let me be.

The next morning was hectic as we all tried to get ready for the day. My mom and I spent most of the morning making dishes for thanksgiving with her side of the family. I made some desserts to take with me when I go to my dad’s thanksgiving dinner.

My brothers sat around, goofing off most of the time before getting dressed. My older sister helped get Brooklyn ready as she got ready herself. I made my way from the kitchen to my room as my mom pulled the green bean casserole out of the oven.

I slipped into a pair of jeggings before pulling a baggy green blouse over my head. I attached the little gold necklace that goes with it to its loops. I sat on my bed as I slid on some brown riding boots to complete the look. I quickly curled my hair into loose curls and made my way back to the kitchen to help take things out to the car.

By the time I got in the kitchen, my brothers and older sister had taken care of everything. “We got it all so just take your pregnant self out to the car,” my brother Aaron joked. I rolled my eyes and smiled before heading out to the car that Aaron, my sister Ariana, and I would ride in together.

I was soon joined by those two while my mom, stepdad, the younger one of my brothers Anthony, and Brooklyn hopped in the other car. My mom led the trip to our aunt’s house and I followed behind her. “Remember when it took you forever to get your license,” Ariana laughed, Aaron soon joining her.

I tried to act annoyed, but couldn’t help it and joined in on the laughter. “Yeah well, at least I got it in the end,” I defended. “Remember when we thought it would be Anthony or you to have a kid first?” I looked in the rearview mirror back at Aaron as I said that.

“Yeah, but I guess we underestimated you,” he looked out the window before facing forward again. “Hand me the aux cord,” he grabbed it before I could pass it back to him and put on some rap song. Then, he started to attempt to freestyle along with it. This sent us all into a fit of giggles.

Before we knew it, we had arrived at my aunt’s house. We grabbed all the food and made our way inside. As it turns out, we were the last ones to get there. “It’s about time,” Vanessa grumbled, “Now we can eat.”

Not before we say grace. Now gather around,” my grandma demanded. We all crowded in the living room and held hands. We all bowed our heads as she leads the prayer. “In your son’s name, amen,” she finished.

Everyone bolted for the kitchen, trying to be first in line. There was plenty of food though as we had an array of options to choose from. We had your typical Thanksgiving food like turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and rolls, but we also had things like tamales and nacho dip, and salsa.

Once we were all settled with our food, we shared what we were thankful for. There were a lot of ‘friends and family’ responses. “I’m thankful for all of you of course, and this little one who will be joining us soon,” I shared as I placed a hand on my baby bump, feeling a little kick in the process.

When we finished our food, we migrated to the living room. The guys focussed on watching some game that was on the TV. Us girls talked about Ariana’s upcoming wedding. “We’re thinking about summer next year, around June or July,” she beamed. I was happy for her as she has always dreamed of this moment.

“Good. That gives Alyssa time to lose her baby weight,” Vanessa laughed.

“Haha very funny,” I rolled my eyes. I’m already dreading all the time I’m going to have to spend at the gym to fit my bridesmaid dress.

“Speaking of the baby, what do you think it’s going to be?” my younger cousin Maria asked. I shrugged my shoulders.

“She thinks it’s going to be a boy, but personally I think she’s having a girl,” Vanessa answered for me. This led to everyone placing bets on whether the baby was going to be a boy or a girl. I laughed at everyone’s determination to be right.

I soon received a text from my dad saying he was almost done with dinner, so now would be the time to head that way. I let Ariana and Aaron know and we shared our goodbyes with everyone.

This time I let Ariana drive. I slid into the passenger seat and leaned against the window. After all the hassle of this morning and eating a lot, I felt very exhausted. I slowly drifted off to sleep on our ride to our dad’s place.

Shortly after I was being shaken awake by Aaron, “We’re here.” I looked up and saw the basketball hoop that was set up above the garage. I reached towards the back seat and grabbed the dessert I made before sliding out of the car.

For once, we were actually early. My dad was in the middle of making some cupcakes when we walked in. It seemed as though he had his hands full with all the pots and pans on the stove. “Here let me help you,” I offered, placing the container in my hands on the dining table with all the other finished food.

“Thanks,” he smiled. I finished mixing the batter then placed it evenly in the cupcake pan. “It’s just like old times,” I looked from where I was at the counter at my dad and smiled. He wiped some sweat off his forehead before pulling me in for a quick hug. He then grabbed the pan out of my hand and slid it into the oven.

While we wait for them to cook, we caught up on everything that’s been going on in our lives. I told him about my internship and he told me about his new job position. My other siblings started to trickle in until all eight of us were there.

Once the cupcakes were done baking and cooling, I quickly frosted them with the help of my dad. We left them on the counter until there was more room at the table. I stepped into the dining room and looked around at the choices. There was ham, greens, cabbage, scalloped potatoes, and more.

My dad followed behind me and sat at the head of the table. My siblings and I followed suit. We sat with our hands in our lap and waited for my dad to lead grace. He cleared his throat before starting, “Please bow your heads.” We did as told and waited for him to continue, “Dear heavenly Father, we are gathered here today…”

After a minute or two, he had finished and we began to eat, some of us for the second time today.

You guys! There are only 5 more chapters left and it makes me sad.  Well, kind of because then that means I can start writing the sequel. I already have the first 10 chapters of it planned out and I think you'll love it.

I just want to make a quick note of the names of my family members that I've mentioned in this chapter. Those are not their real names because I not only felt weird using them, but I also didn't have their permission to use them like I did from my cousin Vanessa. They are real people so I want to respect their privacy. I hope all this makes sense. Funny enough though, my siblings (Aaron, Ariana, and Anthony) and I all have names that start with A's which is why I chose those names.

Well, this is going on too long. I don't know when the next chapter will be up. I want to have it up before my birthday on Monday, but it might not be until afterward. Okay, I'm done now. Hope you enjoyed reading.
