20. The Ugly Truth

Two perfect weeks passed without any worry or second thoughts. It was almost too good to be true. I went to Lucas’ house every night and we would hang out in his room for hours on end. He would pick me up twice a week from rehearsals and we would grab an ice-cream from around the corner. Brian had gotten himself a temporary job at the nearby supermarket, I don’t think the manager knows that he will only be working for another week or two. Mum and dad have been calling us every night and I can hear them and Brian having serious conversations that I am not allowed to be involved in (they know that we are in Sydney now).

The White Opera is in 3 days. Everyone at my rehearsals is getting excited but you can see the costume designers are getting extremely stressed. On Monday I tried to ask one of them what our dresses would look like but she snapped back at me saying, “Mind your own business and stay out of my way.” I was getting to know everyone there and I was finally starting to fit in. There were these two twins Charlie and Alex, I always practice next to them when we can choose our positions.

I look at my watch. I am standing outside of the Opera House waiting for Lucas to collect me. His car honk sounds from down the road, I frown, pretending to look upset about his appearance. But when I see his grin I can’t help but grin too. “Are you excited?” he asks me.

“Excited for what?” I pretend to play dumb.

“You know!” he gave me a playful nudge, I am teasing him, I know exactly what to be excited for. My performance in the Opera House.

“You bet!” I enthuse, he laughs and steers towards the hotel I am staying in.

“How is your dad?” I ask, his expression hardens, “I am going to tell him about mum tonight.”

“Oh. Do you want me to be there?” not knowing how to respond to this I rest my hand on his shoulder.

“You don’t need to see it.” he reassures me. I really want to be there to comfort him but at the same time, I don’t want to get in the way of things. “He will understand, I’m sure.”

“How can he understand when his wife cheated on him and is now somewhere in the world giving birth?” Distress is the first evident sign of uneasiness he had shown in a couple of weeks.

“To be fair, she shouldn’t have dumped all of her troubles on you. She is your mum and you are her son, it’s just unfair!” Lucas’ behaviour is concerning…he isn’t ready to tell his dad everything, but he knows that it is the right thing to do, I hope. Lucas drops me off at Hannah’s house and I give him a quick reassuring kiss before he leaves.

“So why do you think Jacob killed Sophie?” I ask Hannah in her bedroom. We have been having a long conversation about this topic (we had been itching to talk about it). “I know that he had some issues but I didn’t know that they were that bad!” I point out.

“Well he had been on medication according to him, but maybe he got so angry that he just stopped taking it?” Hannah knows more than I did so it is frustrating when I can only get bits of information out at a time.

“So are you saying that he killed her because of his medical issues?”

“Pretty much.” She replies, sounding defeated by Jacob.

“So what should we do? Report him to the police?” I am open for suggestions, there is nothing we can do now to change anything…nothing anyone did will change anything…

“The police have already caught him. It was in the newspaper yesterday.”

The news doesn’t faze me, I have learned to expect the unexpected over these last few weeks. It doesn’t even surprise me that it is in the newspaper, I never read it so I’m not up to date. So long as Jacob ends up in prison, Sophie can rest peacefully in her grave.
