The White Opera

In a world that’s falling apart, Lillia Jane seeks to find the light. Dancing is her soul and passion, but it isn’t always the answer to her problems. She witnessed the murder of her best friend Sophie and won’t be forgetting the feeling of isolation any time soon. Lillia’s parents have moved to Queensland for the summer so now it’s just her and her older brother Brian, as they embark on an amazing adventure through Sydney Australia.

23. Surprise Surprise!

My phone is going off, ringing from across the room at full volume. I jump up out of my seat and stride over to the coffee table, almost tripping over my feet. “Hello?” It is still early so my voice sounds like a frog with a cold.

“Lillia? Lillia! Are you okay?”
“Mum? You never call me.” there is a pause on the other end of the phone.
“Sorry honey, dad and I have been tied up with some things at home. How is Sydney? When is your ballet performance?”
“I’m fine, I’m with Hannah at the moment and Sydney’s good. My performance is in 2 days, I am kind of nervous…this is a big deal for me.” I don’t really want to engage in a deep conversation with her because I am still mad.
“Wow, you really are growing up!”

Hannah comes back and takes the phone from me.
“Hi Mrs Jane! How are you?” she was saving me from a lifetime of awkwardness! I grin, and she rolls her eyes at me, “thanks” I mouth without a sound. I couldn’t hear the stuff mum is saying but whatever it is, Hannah is taking it all in like a sponge. I play with the cushions on the couch while I wait. When the conversation is finally over Hannah says, “Right well we better get you home.”

I find all of my things and we both set off for a long walk to the hotel. “You seem awfully cheerful.” I comment to Hannah, prodding her in the elbow. She gins, “You are so bad at hiding things!” I gush, “What’s up?”
“You’ll have to wait until you get back in your room!” now she is giggling which makes me laugh too. What on earth does she know that I don’t?

When we get back to the hotel I check in and take the rickety elevator up to my room, at this point Hannah can’t contain herself and she looks like she is about to burst. The room is dark and silent when I come in, but when Hannah turns on the light I see…my parents? “SURPRISE!” Everyone shouts. Brian and Tia are sitting in the far corner of the room, Lucas and his dad are standing side by side near my bed and my parents have gotten up from some stools and are now hugging Hannah and I in the doorway.

“Lillia we couldn’t miss your performance! We also came here to report that your grandma is okay, she was near death, her lungs were swollen and filled with fluids but the doctors managed to keep her alive.” This was too much to handle, grandma was going to be okay and my parents just flew to Sydney to see me perform in the Opera House! Tears of happiness blur my eyes as I give everyone a hug. Hannah comes up from behind me and says, “Your mum told me they would be coming today so I got you here as soon as I could!” I squeeze her tight and remember how Sophie used to do this to me.

Lucas comes over to me next, “I talked to my dad. He was angry at first but not at me. I think my parents are going to split up.”
“Oh Lucas that is awful! Are you going to be okay?”
“I’m gonna be fine, but there is good news.” I struggle to imagine what could possibly be good about this scenario.
“Because my parents are splitting up, my mum will probably take our house when she gets back, which means that dad and I are going to need somewhere to stay. After lots of talk last night we decided that it would be best to move to Adelaide.”

My mind is fuzzy from everything that is going on and then I register what he just said. “Lucas that means we can still be together!” I squeal loudly, crying even more.

From now on Sophie is a part of my past, she is a happy memory but nothing more. I am not going to let myself be swallowed by dread and sorrow because I will be looking forward into the future and what destiny awaits me.
