Counting Rainbows

Amberly Kane is an intelligent, pretty college freshman. It seems like she has her whole life ahead of her, and then she meets the gorgeous Mackenzie Baxter. This is a fictional story, but a lot of young adults, college students, and even high school students, can relate to the events that unfold in Amberly's life.

1. Surprise, in 3...2...

"What if he doesn't let me redo the assignment?" My best friend Theo asked frantically. He nervously fixed his curly brown hair.

"Relax, Theo. It's only the second week of classes. I'm sure Professor Smith will make an exception to his no redo rule if you ask nicely." I reassured him. He still looked nervous and unsure.

"Will you go in there with me?" He pleaded. His navy blue eyes burned into mine.

"Yes, I will go in there with you." I smiled and place a hand on his shoulder. He shot me his signature crooked smile, then turned and walked into the open door of the classroom.  I followed behind him.

Professor Smith was sitting at his desk, grading papers. His hand moved swiftly as he scribbled notes on the paper, then flipped it over face down.

Theo cleared his throat. Professor Smith looked up and studied Theo and I. "Umm, excuse me, Professor. I'm Theodore Shaye, I'm in your Psych 101 class."

Professor Smith gave him a slight not. "Yes, I recognize you. What do you prefer to be called, Theodore or Ted?" He asked. Professor Smith was an older gentlemen . Maybe in his late 40s, early 50s. His hair was more grey than his natural brown color, and the age marks on his face were obvious and apparent.

Theo smiled. "Neither, I go by Theo."

Professor Smith smiled. "Well, what can I do for you, Theo?" Theo seemed to relax a bit, probably because of Professor Smith's casual attitude.

"I know you have a strict policy on redoing assignments and I know it's completely out of the question to ask, but could I possibly redo the last assignment?" He asked, sounding a bit frantic at the end. Professor Smith eyed him wearily, then wheeled his chair over to his computer, and clicked a couple times.

"Mr. Shaye, I already graded your assignment. You got a C+. I don't see what all the hoopla is about." He told him.

Theo cringed at the letter grade. "I know, and I've never gotten lower than a B on anything in my life. I need to redo this. Please, just this one time." Theo begged.

See, the thing about Theo was...well, he was a bit of a nerd, and a huge perfectionist. He needed to succeed at everything or he went insane.

Professor Smith picked up his glasses on his desk and put them on. He studied Theo closely, then gave him a small smile. "Just this one time, Ted." He told him.

"Thank you, sir! I promise you won't regret this. I'll have it on your desk by Monday." Theo vowed, with a big goofy smile.

"I'll be sure he gets it done, Professor." I told him. Professor Smith looked over at me.

"Are you his girlfriend?" He asked me.

I burst out laughing. "No, we're just friends. I'm Amberly Kane." I informed him. People are always mistaking Theo and I for a couple. We have been best friends since the third grade and have been inseparable ever since. Of course, I've never thought of him as anything more than a friend. He was basically family. He'd always been that dorky kid that I loved.

"I don't believe I have you in any of my classes." Professor Smith noted.

I shook my head. "No, sir."

"What's your major?" He asked me.

"Either Human Physiology or Biology." I told him.

He nodded impressed. The same look I got from everyone when I told them what I was thinking about majoring in. My dream was to be a surgeon. That was my dream since I was 7 years old. My fascination with helping people has always been apart of me, and being a surgeon seemed like the best path to do so.

"Okay, well we better get going. I got a paper to write. Thanks, again." Theo said, and we walked out of the building. We headed towards my dorm which was on the east side of campus. There were two different campuses for girls and guys. The girls' dorms were both on the east side and the guys' were on the west.

"Thanks for coming with me today. I really appreciate it." Theo thanked, with a crooked smile.

"Ah, don't mention it. What are friends for?" I replied. Just then my roommates, Genna Chambers and Kanon Knight, walked up.

"Hey, Amberly. Hey Theo." Genna greeted.Genna was an average looking 19 year old. She was a redhead with nice brown eyes. She was always in a good mood, and had an amazing singing voice too.

"Where have you been?" Kanon asked.

"Theo needed moral support asking for a redo on his assignment." I told them.

"And I really appreciated it." He said, slinging an arm around me and giving me a kiss on the cheek. "But I need to go and get started on that so I'll see you guys later." And he started to walk in the direction of his dorm.

"Bye, Theo." Genna and Kanon said together. They watched him walk away, then turned to me when he was far enough gone.

"Okay, that boy is totally in love with you." Genna said. Kanon nodded in agreement.

"No, he is not! We're just friends! He's like a brother to me! I've known him basically my whole life." I told them.

Kanon rolled her eyes. "Oh, please. He is totally and completely, head over heels in love with you. He has got it bad, I can tell." She informed me. We started walking back to our dorm.

"Oh, come on you guys. Theo does not have feelings for me.He knows we're just friends." I told them. They both rolled their eyes.

"Whatever." Genna smirked.

We got back to our dorm room and were relaxing for a little while. Kanon walked over to her closet and puled an outfit out. It was a pretty, sparkly top with a short skirt. "Should I wear this tonight?" Kanon asked us.

"What are you doing?" I asked, sitting up on the futon.

"I have a date." She answered, with a smile.

Genna immediately stopped typing and spun around in her chair. "Ooo, with who?" She asked.

"Mackenzie Baxter." Kanon answered, with a bright smile.

"Who's that?" I asked.

"Probably the hottest guy on campus! He's a junior, star football player, and he's a gentleman. I've only talked to him like six times, but I got the gentleman vibe from him." Kanon informed us. "And he's going to be here soon, so I need to get ready."

After about a half an hour or more of primping, she was finally ready.

"Soo, how do I look?" She asked, with her hands on her hips. Gorgeous. I answered bitterly in my head. Kanon was naturally beautiful, but when she was all made up, she was stunning. She had perfect blonde hair and such a beautiful, unusual blue eye color. Plus, the tiny waist and nice boobs helped too. It was unfair really, and I was jealous. I'm not ugly or anything, but compared to Kanon, I was a pile of four week old garbage.

"Great." I answered, with a forced smile. Then, there was a knock on the door.

"That must be him." She said, fixing her hair in the full body mirror one last time. "Do you guys think I should wear my hair up like this? I'm having second thoughts. I should definitely wear it down. Or maybe a braid somewhere." Give me a break...  I didn't think girls actually acted like this.

"Your hair looks fine, just answer the door." Whoops, that came out way more harsh than I intended.

"Alright, alright...jeez." She said, and opened the door.

"Hey, Kanon." The sexy male voice greeted. I craned my neck so I could see him... and saw him I did. The single most gorgeous guy I had ever seen. A perfect face, perfect hair... beyond perfect body. His dark blonde hair and blue eyes were enough to make any girl (or guy for that matter) swoon.

"Ready to go?" He asked.

"Yeah, I just need to grab something in the bathroom quick." Kanon answered. That was girl code for 'I need to fix my hair again.' "You can come in if you want." He stepped in and closed the door behind him. "These are my roommates Genna and Amberly." She introduced, then stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

Mackenzie shook Genna's hand. "It's nice to meet you." Mackenzie said, politely.

Genna blushed, then nodded. "Likewise."

Then he turned to me, studied me for a second, then tilted his head to the side. It reminded me of a dog begging for a treat.

"I've seen you before. Are you on the swim team?" He asked.

I nodded. "I am. Have you been to one of our practices before?" I asked. I didn't remember seeing him, and I definitely would have remembered seeing him.

"Hardly. I was at one for like 5 seconds. I was dropping something off for your coach. She's my mom." He told me. "You were on the diving board, pretty into it. You didn't notice me, but I definitely noticed you." He said, with a heart stopping smile.

I giggled. "I'm surprised you recognized me, I had my swim cap and goggles on."

"I could recognize that face anywhere." He said, with a wink. I could feel the blood rush to my cheeks, and the slight chuckle told me he noticed.

Kanon came out of the bathroom then. She had taken her hair down like she had it earlier in the day. This girl was so indecisive.

"Okay, I'm ready now." She said, flashing him a stunning smile and flipping her hair over her shoulder. I rolled my eyes. Oh, brother. "Should we get going?" She asked.

"Yeah," Mackenzie answered, "It was nice to meet you girls," he said, then looked right at me. "I hope to see you around." And then they left.

"Okay, that guy was beautiful." Genna said.

"You're telling me." I sighed.

"He was totally vibing on you." She told me, with a smirk.

I could feel the blood rush to my cheeks again, and giggled. "Do you think so?" I asked, sounding like a little school girl.

She nodded. "Totally."

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Not just any knock, it was the beginning to Survivor's 'Eye of the Tiger.' Which was Theo's signature knock since the 5th grade. It was his favorite song, and if you kept him waiting long enough he would start singing it.

"Come on in, Theo." I yelled, through the door. Theo swung the door open.

"Hey, ladies. I come with movies." He said, and held up a stack of dvds in his hand. He closed the door and came and sat next to me on the futon.

"I'm gonna go get a snack." Genna said, flashing me a grin. I'm guessing that had something to do with the conversation we had earlier about him having the hots for me...

"So, how's your paper coming?" I asked.

"Great. Definitely getting an A this time, and I have you to thank for that." He said, giving me his crooked grin.

Then I realized, this wasn't the same goofy kid I met in the third grade. Well, he was still goofy, but he was grown up. He was... handsome, I realized. He had finally grown into his ears. Something in my expression must have set him off. He leaned in and kissed me, softly and slowly. There was so much passion and emotion and desire in the kiss, it was unexplainable. He backed out and pressed his nose against mine.

He smiled. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that."
