2. Chapter 2

When I reached the beach, I swiftly pulled myself out of the water onto some smooth rocks. As I cautiously scanned the cove I noticed there was a small group of people on the far side of the beach, gathered around what I think they call a 'fire'.

I opened my satchel, rummaging around for the note the Siren had given me.

The Siren was a beautiful mermaid with flowing blonde hair, bright blue eyes and a stunning purple and pink tail that seemed to sparkle even when there was no light. She had control over magic and often created spells to help our underwater kingdom thrive. The Siren wasn't an evil sorceress or anything like that, she was a very kind being but was good at keeping a secret. She was my main friend and quite a motherly figure in my life, I know I have a mother but she tended to be busy most of the time so I normally went to the Siren instead.

She had made a spell especially for me so that I could swim to the shore and become a human, something I had always dreamed of.

The piece of paper contained simple instructions:

1. When you finally alight upon land, your tail will be gone and legs you shall have.

2. Beware when water touches skin, fifteen seconds 'til the return of your fin.

I squinted my eyes in an attempt to read the last rhyme, but somehow it had gotten torn and I could only make out:

3. If a true love's kiss should come around, your feet w........

I frowned at the page, how was I supposed to find out what it meant? Brushing it off, I put the paper back into my satchel, taking a deep breath. This was it. I was going to have legs and feet!

I wriggled completely out of the water, a strange tingling sensation filling my whole body. I stared at my tail in awe, wait it wasn't a tail anymore; the shimmering blue scales at my waist has changed into smooth skin and it was slowly working its way down my lower half. Suddenly, there was an extremely weird feeling as my tail separated, becoming two long, slender legs.

My face lit up with excitement and I jumped up quickly, only to discover the rock was slippery. I nearly toppled back into the waves before regaining my balance. Slowly, I lowered myself back into a sitting position and stretched my new legs out in front of me.

Then I realised that my lower half was naked. I hadn't brought anything with me due to the fact that, being mermaids, we didn't have clothing for our tails there was no need for it.

Grabbing my satchel I searched for something to cover myself with, and pulled out the green sash I always carried incase my parents told me I wasn't looking 'princessy enough'. I wrapped the piece of scarf-like material around my waist, opening it out so it acted as a mini skirt.

I stood up, carefully this time, and tip toed across the rocks onto the golden sand of the beach. The people around the 'fire' were laughing together. I edged closer, trying to make out their faces, I wanted to see if they looked like how the books described them.

As I crept near I saw that there were five young men and two young women, one of the boys, who had blond spiked up hair, was holding a strange instrument type thing.

He suddenly looked up and noticed me, I quickly stepped back, fright taking over, retreating into the cover of shadows.

"Hello? Are you alright?" I heard his voice call out to me. I didn't know what to do, fear had rooted me to the spot.

What if he knew I wasn't a proper human? What if humans really did want to harm the mer people?

Before I knew it, he had stood up and was jogging over to me, standing beside me within a few seconds.

"Are you alright, love? You seem quite scared." He said in a soft tone, reaching out to touch my arm. I flinched as his gentle fingers landed on my shoulder, many different scenarios flying through my head, all of them ending in disaster.
