The Woman Who Won His Heart

Paul Gabriel Black had just moved to Cania, for his new job as Events Director for Defence and Safety in Paire Amster Events. Leaving his girlfriend back home in Mirinthul, who refused his offer of joining him in Lightham and start a new life together, he was determined to persuade her to come and lay out all the reasons in the world that they'd both work out alright.

Scarlett Lee Ryder, researcher for Paire Amster Events had a principle in life: never get into a relationship with colleagues. She was doing just fine for three years with the company, until this new guy suddenly shows her interest.

Paul didn't want to lose his girlfriend, but it was out of his hand if she won't do anything to help their relationship. There are other women in Lightham anyway, and most Paire Amster female specie are obviously dropping hints of liking him, except for Scarlett Lee Ryder

The month came so quickly without Paul noticing. He was busy as hell, driving from Cania to Lorwick, another state of Obrana country, where MAGDO exhibition will take place in a few weeks. He's been into lots of meetings, with exhibitors, and partners for the exhibition even weekends included because MAGDO will be in the next three weeks.

Luckily that week he stayed in Cania, all meetings were done by video conferences so he was relaxed and he needed it. But other than that, everything went smoothly with the preparation for the exhibition. Paul went out for drinks with Kevin and Vincent on Friday night and went back home around two in the morning.

He woke up that morning around eleven, took a shower and decided to eat out. He locked the door of his flat and started for the elevator just in time for Lee to emerge out of her flat wearing a tight tattered denim short that was an inch above her ankle, she had a white shirt which tips reached just above the waistline of her shorts. She was wearing flip flops and her hair was tied into a messy not at the back of her head. She smiled at him as she headed for the opened elevator which he held for her.

"How is the director of defence?" she asked as they descended.

"Exhausted," he answered smiling at her. She smelled like fresh flowers, and he love the scent playing on his nose. "What about you? How are you?"

"I'm good, busy with the defence database." she answered.

"Where are you headed?" Paul asked.

"I'm having brunch at Bennie's Parlor. What about you?"

They reached the ground floor and Paul walked out with her. His car was on the basement, so why the heck did he walked with her on the ground floor. "I really don't know where I'm headed. I actually wanted to eat too."

"You can come with me if you want," she offered, as they stopped just before the exit door.

"Really?" he asked.

Lee nodded her head.

"Will it be okay with your boyfriend?" he asked. He didn't trouble just in case.

"I don't have a boyfriend so you don't have to worry about anything at all."

Paul raised an eyebrow.

"What?" she asked.

"How come you don't have a boyfriend? You are such a gorgeous girl to not have a boyfriend." He was stating facts. Paul found her really gorgeous, even when she doesn't wear make up. She's got thick lashes, and pinkish cheeks, and her lips were apple red, and she has got the fairest skin among all the women in Paire Amster. There wasn't any freckles or any smudge marks on her at all, she is flawless!

"Thanks Paul, I don't need to be flattered." she answered.

"Well it's true," Paul said honestly. "So where is Bennie's Parlor?"

"Down Tarnstead Beach," she answered.

"Come on, I'll have brunch with you."

Fifteen minutes later, she and Paul were sat in a table for two on the second floor of Bennie's Parlor. She love Saturday brunch at Bennies which she does every weekend except when she's out of town to visit her parents in Lorwick or when she's out with her friends or her team.

"So do you have a family here?" Paul asked as the two of them started their meal.

"I am from Lorwick originally," she answered and took a sip of her watermelon shake. "My brothers are spread all over the state,"

"Nice. How far is Lorwick?" he feed himself with beef dumplings.

"Six hours drive from here," she answered. "What about you? Which state are you from?"

"I'm from Mirinthul,"

"Oh, twenty hours flight!"

Paul nodded his head. "Have you been there?"

Lee nodded her head. "When our eldest brother got married five years ago. His wife is from Mirinthul I forgot which state. Is your girlfriend here with you?"

"How did you know I have a girlfriend?"

"Because you look like you have a girlfriend," she answered.

"How can you tell?"

"You never show interest with the women in our office," she looked at him.

Paul smiled. "Very observant of you."

"Thanks," she smiled back. "So is she here?"

He shook his head. "No she isn't," the last time he talked to Jewel was two weeks ago and it wasn't a long conversation at all. She was in a hurry so he let her go.

"You got no plans to bring her here?" Lee asked.

He looked into her eyes. "She doesn't want to leave the country."

"Oh," she said. "Then you have to visit her every month."

"Maybe after the event,"

"Oh yeah I forgot about MAGDO!" she said shaking her head.

"So why don't you have a boyfriend?" it was his turn to ask her questions.

Lee sighed chewing her food then answered when she swallowed it down with her watermelon shake. "Because no one asked me on a date."

Paul raised an eyebrow. "I doubt. What about the boys in your team? Don't they find you attractive."

"It's embarrassing if I ask them right?"

They laughed.

"How long since the last relationship?"

"Four years I think. I kind of lost count." she answered.

Paul nodded his head. "You must be enjoying your job. I read that people who are dedicated and who loves their job don't seem to have time to go out on dates. Except for those who's got a relationship already."

Lee shrugged. "I don't know. I guess it's just coincidence. The last boyfriend I dated we lasted for like a year. I never last more than a year with my past relationships, I really don't know why."

"Sorry to hear that,"

"How long have you been with your girlfriend?" she asked.

"Four years,"

"Wow!" she gave him an approving nod. "Both of you are keepers."

He was not sure this time about his relationship with Jewel. Their conversations had started to drift into that emptiness and Paul knows very well where they were headed. He didn't want to let go, after MAGDO he's going home to talk to her. He knows Jewel loves him so much and he's sure that she didn't want to end their relationship at all. A few weeks more and he will be seeing her again.
