The Only Reason

I was lying. There's actually one person in my life that gets me. One person that never jumps to judge me. He's the only person I can talk to. But the thing is, I don't even know his real name.

I call him Thomas. I met him on one of those chat roulette things and we started talking. At first it was that awkward getting to know each other phase but now we can talk about anything, sorta. He's the only person I can trust.

7. chapter 7

Calum's POV

I watch as Mary's car leaves the school parking lot and drives down the street. I head over to my car and open the door but someone slams it back out of my grip.

"Well if it isn't the star player, team captain of the Mavericks. How's it going Calum?"

Standing before me is the captain of the Eagles, Derek, and his two friends, Nathan and Justin. They always had it in for Ashton and I since we all go to the same football camp over the summer.

"Good, now what do you want?" I glare at him.

Derek chuckles. "Why do you think I want something? I just came here to talk. That's all. Who was that pretty girl you were just with? I didn't know you actually had the balls to ask someone like that out."

I can feel my fingers curling up in fists from anger. "Leave her out of it alright. It's none of your goddamn business."

"Wow, calm down Cal, don't want ya driving with that temper." Nathan smirks.

"Get out of my way assholes." I get in my car and start the engine. The guys are laughing outside of the car as I drive by them so I flip them off.

"See you at Victoria's party!"

Once I get home I change out of my football jersey and into some of my normal clothes. Black ripped skinnys and a muscle top. I grab a beanie and head out the door.

When I make it to Mary's house, I knock on her door and she opens it quickly.

"Hey, sorry I'm late." I tell her. "It's okay. It gave me more time to choose an outfit. How do you like it?" Mary twirls around to show off her clothes.

"You look beautiful." I kiss her cheek and lead her to my car.

"Are you excited?" I ask her. She shrugs. "It's not like we can be together there. I'll be alone or maybe with Michael."

"Why are you always hanging out with him anyways?" I snap. I didn't mean to get angry but she's always with him. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a crush on her.

Mary frowns. "He's my friend. You know I don't have many."

"I know. And it's probably my fault. It's just that I can tell he likes you, and not just as friends. I didn't mean to get angry." I feel Mary's hand on mine as she intertwines our fingers together.

"Calum you have nothing to worry about." She pecks my cheek.

A few minutes later we arrive at Victoria's party.

"So do you want to go in first?" She asks. "Let's go together. Honestly I don't care what people think." I tell her.

"Really?"

I stare at my girlfriend before kissing her lips softly. "Really. I'm done hiding us."

We walk into the party hand in hand. When people come up to greet us they don't even notice that we're a couple.

"I think everyone's drunk." Mary says while scanning the crowd. "I guess so. Want a drink?"

I don't give her time to reply because we are right beside the kitchen. I had her a cup of coke and grab a beer for myself.

"What is this?" Her face is all twisted and I can't help but laugh.

I take a sip. "Coke and rum."

She stares at me before taking another sip. "I guess it's alright."

"Wanna dance?" I question as I put my beer on the counter.

"I don't know Calum. I'm not that good."

I roll my eyes and grab her hand. "I already told you that you're good. Don't be shy."

Mary's POV

"Don't be shy." Calum smiles at me before leading me onto the dance floor.

I can't help but look around to see if people are staring but no one is. It feels like Calum and I are the only ones in the room.

"This is weird. Me being at a house party. With you." The song changes to a slow one so Calum wraps his arms around my waist. I place mine around his neck and stare up at him.

"Did you ever imagine us like this?" I ask. I can feel Calum's grip tighten around my waist. He looks deep into my eyes for a second before nodding his head.

"I remember when I first saw you back in grade 9. You looked lost and I wanted to help you but I ended up making fun of you instead. I guess I did it because I liked you but it doesn't make much sense."

The song changes again to a more up beat song. I look around and see the couples are grinding and making out on the dance floor.

"We can go back to the kitchen." Calum suggests.

"Let's keep dancing. Do you know how to grind?" Calum stares at me in shock but nods his head.

"Cool." I turn around and we start grinding. Once the song finished Calum pulls me into the kitchen. He grabs his beer and I get another drink.

"Who taught you how to dance like that?" Calum breaths out. I shrug. "I guess I'm just talented." Calum laughs at my comment but quickly stops when he sees something.

"Cal? What's wrong?" I follow his eyes to see that he's looking at his friends that are walking towards us.

"Hey guys. What's going on?" Michael wraps an arm around my shoulders and stares up at Calum.

"Uh. Nothing. Just hanging out." Calum speaks slowly. I look at him with a desperate look but he just shakes his head.

"So Mary, I was wondering about that date I wanted to take you out on." Michael says. I don't have any time to respond when Calum burst out.

"You were going to ask Mary out?" Calum exclaims. Michael nods his head. "Ya. Do you have a problem?" He asks.

Calum takes a long drink of his beer before putting it on the counter. "Actually, I do." He says whilst wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Calum I don't care what problems you have with Mary. I like her so you're going to have to deal and be my friend." Michael says as he takes a step before me like he's protecting me.

"You know what? Me neither." Calum turns to me. "Mary I'm sorry for all the horrible things I've said to you over the years. I'm sorry for making you feel like shit. I can't take away the pain I put you through but I'm trying."

Calum looks at Michael and then to Ashton and Luke. "I'm over hiding who I really am, well to you guys. I'm not just that football jerk that everyone knows. Not anymore."

"What're you trying to say?" Ashton questions.

"I-I—"

"He's trying to tell you that someone has changed him and that someone's me." Calum smiles at me as I walk over to him and wrap my arms around him. He has this goofy grin plastered on his face before he kisses me gently.

"No more secrets." He tells me. "No more secrets." I repeat.
