Ignis and Glaciem

I am different to the other kids, in more ways than one. I mean, no-one really fits in in high school but I just feel different, though that could be down to the fact that I’m a Wise One. My name is Doe. I’m not entirely sure why my parents named me so but I think they said it was something to do with how innocent I look when I sleep and how fragile I can be...

4. Unconcious

When I walked through the front gate, I could see Fabien sat where we usually do, talking on his phone. I couldn’t hear anything but as I started to walk towards him, he noticed me and I am pretty sure I saw him mouth “got to go, Doe’s here”. He put his phone in his pocket and smiled at me.
“Morning. Doe, are you feeling okay?”
“Um, yeah. Fabien, what’s going on with you?”
“I-I can’t say. Sorry. It’s just… look it doesn’t matter. Sorry for leaving so abruptly on Friday. I didn’t want to I-just, never mind.”
“Fabien, I-“ but the bell rang and cut me off.
“Look, I’ll see you in English”. He walked off to registration. What was that about? He seemed like he wanted to tell me whatever this thing was but couldn’t. What was so secret that he couldn’t tell me… well, I can’t tell him I’m a Wise One, I suppose.
I walked into registration and sat down near the front of the room where the air conditioning was blowing the most. I felt even more dizzy now and heat coursed through my veins for the first time I can remember for a long time. The edges of my vision turned blurry and I started to feel extremely sick. I put my hand up to tell the teacher that I felt ill. She told me to go to the toilet if I thought I was going to be sick so I stood up, got my bag from under the table and walked out the door. I made my way up the corridor so I could walk past Fabien’s registration room and see if I could see him.
As I got close to his registration room, Fabien walked out of the door and stepped towards me.
“Fabien, why are you out of registration?”
“I need to call my mum about something so I was going to the office. Doe, are you okay, you’re more pale than usual.”
“I-I…” my head went dizzy and my vision went dark. I stumbled forwards and began to fall towards the floor. Someone caught me by my waist and stood me back up straight. I blinked, trying to get the darkness out of my eyes and I felt really warm. I never feel warm, I mean, everything around me can be warm which makes me uncomfortable but my body itself is never warm. I heard a ringing in my ears and something else.
“Doe, sit down here whilst I get a teacher”. It was Fabien. He sat me down, my back against the wall and walked back into registration to get his teacher. My sight began to come back and so did my hearing but I still felt warm and very, very sick. I loosened my tie and took off my jumper in the hope that I would cool off but no such luck. Fabien and his form teacher came back into the hall and helped me stand up.
“Mr Locke, could you take Miss Smith down to the office and have them ring her parents. She is obviously not well enough to stay in school.”
“Yes, sir”. Fabien took my arm and helped me walk slowly to the office. When we got there, he sat me down on the settee and went to tell the receptionist what happened. She rang my parents and Fabien then told them what had happened too. Once he’d finished talking to them, he sat next to me.
“Your dad’s coming to get you. Apparently, Ivory threw up this morning before he went to drive to college and had to stay home. Your mum said he had a temperature and almost fainted too. There must be something going round”. He paused and looked at me. “How are you feeling now?”
“I don’t know”. I looked down at my hands. My fingertips were no longer a slightly blue-y colour but pink and they didn’t feel cold against the rest of my skin.  I stood up and looked out of the window to see if I could see my dad coming up the hill but there was no one there. The edges of my vision started to darken again and I had to grab the windowsill to stop myself from falling to the floor. I waited a minute to see if it would pass but it only got worse and I dropped onto the carpet.
Everything was quiet except a voice. Fabien’s voice saying my name. I woke up a second later; my body ached. Fabien lifted me up and lay me down on the settee. He brushed my hair away from my face and put his palm on my forehead. He made a worried face and linked his hand with mine. We sat like this until my dad drove up the hill.
My father walked through the doors and saw me lying on the couch and looked worried too, like Fabien. He helped me stand up.
“She fainted again, just a couple of minutes ago and she feels very warm”
“Okay, thank you for watching her Fabien”. He nodded and walked back to registration. He had never called his mum after all of that.
My dad strapped me into the front seat of the car and put the air conditioning on. He never did that, he always put the heating on when he got in the car but I guessed it was for me.
It was a quick drive home because there was little traffic. The sun continued to shine and it was all I could concentrate on. It had never shined this brightly before. I knew something was going on now and I hoped that my parents had managed to find out by now.
We pulled up on the drive and my dad helped me out of the car and into the house. He hadn’t spoken the whole way home so he must have been thinking about something.
I sat at the bottom of the stairs and took off my shoes. It took me ages to untie my laces because my hands were shaking so much but once I had finally taken them off, I drifted upstairs to my room and lay in bed. My head hurt but I wasn’t tired so I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling, picturing Fabien. I was glad to not be at school but I missed him and I didn’t think I’d be in a fit state for school for a few days so I probably wouldn’t see him for a little while. I decided that I would call him this evening if I could. The sound of his voice made my heart flutter.
I grew warmer so I kicked my bed sheets onto the floor and turned my pillow over. I tried to lie still but it made no difference. I sat up and looked at my palms wondering if I had enough energy to use my powers to cool down. I still couldn’t decide but thought I would risk it anyway so I traced the outline of a snowflake onto my palm with my other hand then pulled up and a snowflake appeared. I willed it to become bigger and it turned into a small flurry of snow then left it to float above my bed, the frozen magic covering me in an icy blanket. I felt much calmer but drained of energy so it wasn’t long until I drifted off.
