Ignis and Glaciem

I am different to the other kids, in more ways than one. I mean, no-one really fits in in high school but I just feel different, though that could be down to the fact that I’m a Wise One. My name is Doe. I’m not entirely sure why my parents named me so but I think they said it was something to do with how innocent I look when I sleep and how fragile I can be...

1. Sets

Walking home from school was peaceful. It was cold and the breeze was sharp but I liked it that way. School hadn’t exactly been the best day and to be honest, I’d rather not talk about it. I never particularly liked high school, it was hard. I am different to the other kids, in more ways than one. I mean, no-one really fits in in high school but I just feel different, though that could be down to the fact that I’m a Wise One. If you don’t already know what a Wise One is, it’s basically what mortals call a witch. I have magical powers but only to a certain extent, see if both your parents are Wise Ones and so are all of your siblings unless there is at least ten years between all the siblings who are, you are a Set. If not, your just a family. There isn’t much difference except when you’re part of a Set, you share powers. Everyone has a specialty which they are strongest at but the other people in your Set will have the same power just slightly weaker. I suppose if you’re mortal this might take a while to get your head round but I’ve grown up in a Set so to me it seems normal.
Anyway, getting back to the fact about me not fitting in. I don’t generally act like other people, my friends say I’m ‘unique’ and I suppose we’re all different but we all have some common interests except I don’t know any other Wise Ones my age. No one at school knows I am a Wise One and it’s not that I don’t want them to know but they most likely wouldn’t understand and unfortunately, I don’t have any memory erasing powers. My whole group of friends are very close but I don’t know if they could accept me being a Wise One.

A strong gust of wind broke my thoughts just as I was approaching my house. The house was quite big, I mean, we’re not very wealthy but I have three sisters and two brothers so we’re not exactly a small Set. I walked up the stairs to my room. My room is the smallest because I am the youngest and it’s the warmest, one of the worst rooms in the house for one of the two only Glaciems in my set. Oh yeah, forgot that, there are two, I guess, types of Wise One, fire and ice or Ignis and Glaciem. Most Wise Ones are Ignis and a small minority are Glaciem. There isn’t much difference except that Igni perform better in hot, clear weather and don’t like rain, wind or cold much whilst Glaciems perform better in cold, snowy or rainy weather and don’t like hot weather or cloudless skies much. As I said, I’m a Glaciem so having a warm room isn’t the most helpful and it means that I can’t practice in my room because I can’t concentrate properly. Unfortunately, this was the only room left by the time I was born and I couldn’t share with my sisters for two reasons, one being that four girls in one room would be ridiculously cramped and also the fact that all of my sisters are all Igni and so that room is the warmest in the house. My brothers don’t share because they are opposing elements and my parents couldn’t split the room so it was warm and cold enough for both brothers. If you’re wondering why I don’t share with my brother who’s a Glaciem like me it’s because we don’t exactly get along. He’s quite, well, cold. That happens a lot with Glaciems, they can be quite bitter and sharp although I seem to have escaped that, I mean, I’m no angel but I am nothing like my brother. My other brother is much kinder. He seemed to escape the short temper and hot-headedness of an Ignis so he is generally quite calm. My sisters do have a fairly short temper but they are okay most of the time and we all get on well although they don’t have a massive amount of patience so they find it too difficult to teach me their specialties.

Nevertheless, I never introduced you to my family. There’s my mother, Alys, who’s an Ignis and my father, Rowan, who’s also an Ignis. They are very kind and not that strict, although of course, they have a few rules to keep us safe. My father is a sort of noble among Wise Ones and my mother is too, although she wasn't always but she became a noble by being very skilled in healing. Nobles in the Wise One society is not like in the mortal society. People earn status by being particularly skilled in their magic or even when respected by many or very wise. I suppose we as children of two noble parents would be nobles but until we reach twenty-one, we are still counted as minor Wise Ones. By twenty-one, our powers should be fully formed and from then on, we master them. But putting that aside, I was introducing my family. First, my oldest sister, Anya, who is nineteen and is leaving for university soon. She wanted to go sooner but my mum needed to make sure that her powers would be safe whilst she was away however, she is a little less than two years away from no longer being a minor and will be able to earn the title of noble so my parents are not too worried anymore. After Anya, there’s my two brothers. They are twins but complete opposites. My brother Faren, the Ignis, is exactly seven minutes and seven second older than Ivory, my Glaciem brother. They are both seventeen, almost eighteen but only Faren acts like it. Ivory is always annoyed at my brother, even when he’s done nothing wrong. He acts like seven minutes and seven seconds makes a huge difference and that he is ignored all the time. I love Ivory but to be quite honest, I don’t like talking to him much. He’s usually very dismissive although occasionally he can be okay. It just depends. After my two brothers, there’s my sister Sierra. She’s sixteen. There’s not much to say about her, I suppose. She’s very nice but sometimes quite impatient although she loves taking me out clothes shopping, which I don’t mind because I quite like the way she dresses and when she’s older, she wants to be a fashion consultant. Next, there’s Leven. She’s fifteen nearly sixteen like Sierra and she’s not like most Igni. She’s generally quite quiet and she mostly just reads in the attic. My parents often wonder if she is in fact a Glaciem but she can’t stand the cold and doesn’t have enough patience to talk to people for very long. My parents home school her because she is both too impatient and too smart for school. Because she reads so much, she knows things that most thirty year-olds don’t know and so she wouldn’t learn anything at school. The fact that she is impatient is another matter. Being an Ignis, my sister could quite easily blast everything in a ten metre radius. She wouldn’t mean to but if she got too scared or pressured, she could hurt a lot of people. That’s why she stays at home. She is very nice when you talk to her and she gives me lots of books that she has read and thinks I might like but I don't talk to her much so I don't end up making her annoyed. As you can probably tell, my Set isn’t the most normal of Sets or families but we do love each other and would always protect each other no matter what.

Oh, it almost slipped my mind, I didn’t introduce myself. My name is Doe. I’m not entirely sure why my parents named me so but I think they said it was something to do with how innocent I and pure, at least I think that was the word they used, and how fragile I can be. Seeing as I am a Glaciem who isn’t particularly bitter, I am fragile like ice. I suppose Wise Ones take characteristics from their element and much like ice, I will crack and melt, though not literally, if I undergo too much pressure. I am the most sensitive in my family and get easily agitated though I try not to show it. I am different I suppose.
