Why did Maleficent bestow her 'gift' on Princess Briar Rose? Some believe there is a reason for everything, but no one has asked for one in the case of Maleficent, the mistress of all evil, as that's what she was regarded as. There is a time to blame. There is a time to curse. There is a time to find out the truth of Maleficent.

A different take on the story of Sleeping Beauty, giving a reason for Maleficent's 'evil.'

3. Walking Through the Forest

The next day, Queen Maleficent left her crumbling castle, and descended down the dying drawbridge to go through the forest. She had not left her palace in years, always asking her Raven to find the secrets of the land for her. Today was different. Today she had to leave her house, as there was a threat to her kingdom, a threat she knew all too well.

Stefan's ancestors had stolen the south land from Maleficent's parents, and after their death Maleficent (who was only young) could not banish Stefan. When she became of age, she was given her full powers, in this in itself scared Stefan's fathers, and so they left to the North, as the land was also infertile. Maleficent regained control of her parent's land, but now it seemed Stefan had the confidence to trespass over it again, with another army. Maleficent had to find out why. There was something else the Raven told her, which made this visit more important. It seemed the child had golden hair.

This was unheard of, and Maleficent felt she would make quite an entrance, today of all days, as this was the day of the girl's christening. Maleficent had her plans of what she must do to the girl, because if she grew and married, Maleficent could face another war, one in which she would be outnumbered. The Raven also mentioned her small lips were as red as the ancient rose, that of which Maleficent had not sighted since her youngest of youth.

Maleficent kept walking through the dying land that she knew she had poisoned, and heard the tree's groan and murmur to her as she did so. The Raven flitted around and along side, as he acted as Maleficent's longest companion. Maleficent also struggled with the idea of how Stefan came to the decision of coming toward her land, as she took many decisions to make sure know one did.

She made the castle look haunted and crumbling, she even gave herself an enchantment, making her grow horns, so that rumours would spread of 'the fierce beast that lived in the castle.' As Maleficent neared the castle, these thoughts ran through her mind, only making what she would do the child more severe, mainly for her parents.

And so, just a few minutes later, Maleficent came close to the castle gates, and without being seen melted into a small ball of green light, rippling invisibly through the air, to the child's christening.
