Why did Maleficent bestow her 'gift' on Princess Briar Rose? Some believe there is a reason for everything, but no one has asked for one in the case of Maleficent, the mistress of all evil, as that's what she was regarded as. There is a time to blame. There is a time to curse. There is a time to find out the truth of Maleficent.

A different take on the story of Sleeping Beauty, giving a reason for Maleficent's 'evil.'

2. The Queen Under Threat

The Moon rose over the dark land, and night cast its eerie shadow over the Queen's castle. On the outside lay tattered green fungal bricks, with a stiff drawbridge and old flags, hanging ripped from the battlements. The forest tree's all closed their ominous eyes to sleep for the night, as did the dirt, dead, and dust on the ground.

The light from a staff can be a powerful one, and the only light left in the castle was emitted by that staff, which glowed a white green against the dark and blue of the Moon. The light was felt especially by the woman in the high tower which roof had worn away. The cold flooded in over her face, and as she heard the cry of a Raven, her spiked headress lifted, showing a face of divine beauty and wickedness to the Moon.

She laughed and gave her grin largely to the Moon, as the Raven swept down into the tower, and perched itself on her staff.

"Come, come my pet," Queen Maleficent purred, "What news do you have for me? Is the land still a wasteland? Is there still no life? Is my tranquility disturbed?" She turned round to her face her thrown, a giant skeletal structure, made of the bones of those she had conquered. As she walked toward it, her Raven pet squawked, and when she finally sat down, she heard the news the Raven's fear carried.

"King Stefan? Tresspassing on my land? No!" Queen Maleficent's face twisted and snarled into that of anger, and she gripped her ebony staff tightly, as the green white ball on top of it began to glow brighter. It began to shift into an image, picturing the tyrant King Stefan marching with his troops toward the abandoned castle but twenty miles from here. His troops looked tired, and Maleficent spied Queen Leah, Stefan's wife, and she was holding a baby. Maleficent knew what this meant. With anger, she lifted her staff and slammed it on the stone floor in anger, shooting green rays of sharp light, jetting through the air and then through the sky.

"They dare travel here from the north? And with a new born child! A descendant of the cowardly tyrant! They will reach the abandoned castle by nightfall, and then who knows what or who they shall conquer next… I must…" Maleficent put on a charming yet devious tone, "Pay them a visit, welcome them to the South. Maybe bestow a gift to their new child…" Maleficent eyed her Raven friend, as she began to draw up a plan in her mind.

"Come my dear, go back to Stefan and his troops. Find information we can use to help ourselves. Especially about that beautiful baby." The Raven squawked with glee, and flew up and out of the tower into the night sky. Maleficent through back her head and laughed, as a plan was coming together, to ensure Stefan would not act, and in the future would have no child to act with.
