Why did Maleficent bestow her 'gift' on Princess Briar Rose? Some believe there is a reason for everything, but no one has asked for one in the case of Maleficent, the mistress of all evil, as that's what she was regarded as. There is a time to blame. There is a time to curse. There is a time to find out the truth of Maleficent.

A different take on the story of Sleeping Beauty, giving a reason for Maleficent's 'evil.'

9. The Day of Maleficent's Promise

Bells and chimes rang out from the castle tower, and as she walked through the forest, Maleficent could hear chants about the Princess.

"Happy Birthday Princess!" She heard, as the joyous tyrants of Stefan ran drank and sang in the castle. The Raven told Maleficent that Briar Rose and Stefan were walking through the castle, and had just come out of it's tall structure into the courtyard. Maleficent could see the gates of the castle, and listened to Briar Rose and Stefan as they spoke at the gates.

"Father, the sky is shining brighter than ever today, may I go into the woods for a few hours, to enjoy it?"

"Anything for my Princess." Stefan beamed at his daughter, and watched the rose's spring from the ground as she ran. When she was out of sight, Stefan put on a face of sadness, and went back through the castle gates. As he turned he saw Greith, who stared and said nothing to him, knowing that the King felt there was nothing he could do to save his daughter from Maleficent's curse.

Briar Rose ran into the forest, ducking and diving through tree's and rose's, and sunlight, and all kinds of life. Then she came across a very different specimen. She looked behind her and saw the sunlight follow her steps. When she turned, she screamed and stopped, as who should she run into? Maleficent, standing in the shadows. The sunlight shone somewhere else, and Briar Rose panted as she stared into the green eyes in the shadows. Briar Rose slowly stopped, and began to laugh.

"Such darkness around you. Don't be afraid." She held out her hand, beckoning Maleficent to come out of the shadows.

   "I'm not afraid."

   "Then come out."

"Then you'll be afraid," Maleficent stepped out of the shadows, as Briar Rose stared in awe at her, "Do you fear me child?"

"No. No one should live in such darkness," Briar Rose pondered for a while, "I know you. I know your voice." Maleficent smiled her glittering smile.

"Where, Princess? I hear yours is the beauty of this kingdom."

"Once upon a dream, and the way your eyes, shine."

"Visions are not always what they seem child." Maleficent smiled as the song she sung Briar Rose when she was a child was a command, so that she would trust Maleficent the day she next met her, which was of course, today. Briar Rose gazed at Maleficent in awe.

"My child, I feel it is your birthday."

   "Yes. Today I turn sixteen."

"A very special day. I think I might have  a gift for you."

"My father warned me never to leave with strangers."

"Then we shan't leave." Maleficent banged her staff on the dirt, and green light swirled around the ground. Briar Rose stood back as the light twisted into three separate objects. Briar Rose did not know what they were, and she stepped back so she would not get touched by the green. The green light spun into what Maleficent knew were spindles, but what she and Briar Rose did not know would be Briar Rose's death.
