Why did Maleficent bestow her 'gift' on Princess Briar Rose? Some believe there is a reason for everything, but no one has asked for one in the case of Maleficent, the mistress of all evil, as that's what she was regarded as. There is a time to blame. There is a time to curse. There is a time to find out the truth of Maleficent.

A different take on the story of Sleeping Beauty, giving a reason for Maleficent's 'evil.'

12. Stefan and Maleficent

"Maleficent! Maleficent! Face me you murderous wretch! Maleficent!" Stefan stumbled through the forest, with a drunken sword, screaming for the one who he believed had murdered his child. He continued to shout and scream, until, he heard a laugh in the distance. A dark cackle, and the noise of a staff banging on the ground.

"Why, King Stefan. What brings you hear, on a dark, sleepless night like this?" Stefan turned.

"I come for you Maleficent!" Stefan ran at her, but with a bang of her staff, Stefan found himself ten feet away from Maleficent, sprawled on the floor. Maleficent laughed.

"Oh Stefan, don't be silly. You have not wanted to see me for sixteen of your daughters years!"

"I did not want to see you Maleficent, yes, but it seems you appeared to my daughter!" Stefan stumbled upward and stood facing Maleficent.

"Appear to your daughter? Your daughter knows nothing of my existence!"

"Is that so? Is that why the prick of a spindle lies on her finger?"

"The girl has never seen a spindle in her life, Stefan, have you had too much wine?"

"The only wine I drink is from the cup of sadness and despair," Stefan pointed at Maleficent, "That of which you have created! As well as the spindle that stabbed her finger!" Maleficent continued to laugh, as her Raven squawked.

"Oh, Stefan. It took you so long to notice," Stefan wretched as Maleficent paced around him, "It took you so long to notice that I sent your daughter into endless sleep. It took you so long to notice that she had been gone for so long. It took you so long to notice that she fell by my spindle's hand," Maleficent leaned into Stefan's face, "And you never did notice, that from such far distance, it was still I who killed your wife!" Stefan let out a muffled shriek.

   "How, wonderful!"

"No!" Stefan thrust his sword at Maleficent, but using her staff she sent it away, and pushed Stefan back to the floor.

"I still do not see why, Maleficent. Why kill my daughter? Why does this evil writhe inside you?"

"Stefan, did you not hear the curse I left on Briar Rose?" Maleficent paced around Stefan, as his face twisted into a look of confusion, "Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger, on the spindle of a spinning wheel, and fall into a dark sleep like DEATH! The curse will last until the end of days... only the opposite emotion to mine can change it."

"She is in no sleep, Maleficent! She is only in death! The life has left her, the breath and beat gone to bed. She is no more." Maleficent stood confused.

"What trickery is this?" Stefan pointed at Maleficent.

"First, you kill my wife. Then my daughter and you deny it? I name you, forever, the Mistress of All Evil!" Maleficent laughed, yet again.

"My evil only stretches to her sleep. It is not me you should be hunting for evil further. I suppose I do feel awful for taking the credit off someone else's exquisite work."

"I shall tear you apart, Maleficent! I shall bring my army and hunt you down, tearing away that evil that lies in your bones! Then I shall try to revive my daughter."

  "You shan't, Stefan. You shan't."

"What power do you possess now, witch?" Maleficent leaned close to Stefan's face.

"Hunt me all your life, or stay with your daughter." Stefan looked into Maleficent's glowing green eyes. From below, a twisted root sprang, slowly. It creaked as several thorns thrust out of it, between Stefan and Maleficent. Maleficent stepped back.

"Choose wisely Stefan! You have but seconds!" Stefan's face turned into disgust, and knew where he had to be. The thorns would separate the castle from the outside world, and turned. He ran as thorns sprang behind him, the laugh of Maleficent sounding in every spindle-like point...
