ella

I swear to god, the sun is heating up. Hotter and hotter, it must be getting closer. I go to sleep in my own sweat and I wake up in my own sweat. The world is changing, but you stay the same. You keep me sane in this heat. You keep me alive, for the world knows I would've melted.

3. home

{I know I'm a week late but it's been busy around here! So sorry!!}

I jump off my bike after placing it along the porch of the house I currently call home. I run up the stairs and immediately notice that it's hotter in here than it is outside.

"Why's it so hot?" I question really no one but instead wait for a response.

"Air conditioning isn't working," said my foster dad as he entered the foyer, his dress shirt covered in wet sweat marks. "Did you see your mother today?"

I nodded. "She was talking about Daddy."

"Wow," he started. "It's been a long time since she's talked about anyone."

"I know, but, actually she did say something that caught my attention."

"What's that?" He asked as he moved across the floors opening all air vents he could.

"She kept talking about how he was supposed to be there with her. To meet her."

My foster dad stopped and looked at me, too hesitantly. "Oh."

"Do you know what she's talking about? I normally wouldn't ask--."

"No, no, Ella yes you would be asking. I don't know why she talked about your father like that."

"Oh, well why didn't you tell me Daddy and you were friends?"

His eyes went wide, like they could bulge out of their sockets. "That was a long time ago."

"What does--."

"Ella!" I didn't finish and instead looked up at the stairs to meet eyes with the brown eyes.

"Liam," Geoff started. "I need you to go pick up a new air conditioning unit."

"Sure," he said.

Geoff started to walk off but before he could disappear he spoke, "Take Ella with you." Then he was gone.

"Ready?" Liam looked down at me. It frustrated me that Geoff wouldn't talk about my dad or my mother. It upset me that it feels like I'm in the dark.

I nodded and followed him to the garage. We got into his black Corvette and made our way to appliance warehouse.

"What's up?' I heard Liam say.

"Nothing," I lie.

"Really? Your face says differently."

Was he really looking at me. "It's nothing, Liam."

"It's something. Did your mum say anything different today."

I really didn't want to but I gave into him. "She started to talk about my dad and your dad."

"My dad?"

"Yeah," I looked at him, "they both worked together."

"In Government?"

"Yeah."

"It doesn't really surprise me, really." I quickly looked back at him and he glanced at me. "Why else would you be basically given to my dad?"

I believed him, but something still wasn't right.

"What do you think Government is doing?"

"What are you talking about, Ella? Just because you're mum said something--."

"Whatever," I snapped. "I knew you would defend them."

"Defend them! El who would I be defending?!"

"Your dad," I say bluntly.

"What do you think they're lying about?" He parks outside the warehouse and turns to look at me.

"My parents," I tell him. "Besides what about the weather? It's bizarre."

"I don't know about your parents, but I highly doubt Government controls the weather."

Sure, they don't. "It's on 2022, Liam."

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything, Liam! Government is going to start an apocalypse, and we're all just pawns."

"You're talking bullshit," he says as he gets out of the car.

"He has you fooled, Liam," I say as I also get out of the car. "They have us all fooled."

He walks around the car and stops in front of me. "How can one afternoon with your mother make you so interested in everything going on? This is treason, El. Government will have you thrown in prison for talking the way you do. Just stop it. You need to stop worrying about the world around you, Government has it taken care of."

That's what they want you to think. They have this planned. They know what they're doing. They're starting a fire and making us get fevers we can't sweat out. So we'll burn up.

Just burn up.
