"Do you want to meet up tomorrow?" Ansley asks. "I can tell you if Ally still suspects anything." I shift my weight on the top step and it creaks. I freeze. "Did you hear that?" Ansley says. "I didn't hear anything," Zayn replies. "You're just imagining things. Let's meet up here tomorrow again. Same time, 3:00. Ally will be at camp." I hear them stand, so I race down the stairs as quietly as I can and wedge myself in between the grand piano in my living room and the wall. I really don't like small spaces, but I take a deep breath. It's either this or being caught by Ansley and Zayn. The front door opens and closes. I hear Ansley humming and opening the fridge. Finally, I hear the jingle of her car keys and she leaves. I stand up slowly and think about what I just overheard. There's a slim chance Ansley didn't kill Ava, but at this point it really sounds like she did. I check my phone to see what time it is. Lacey won't be here to pick me up for a while yet. She has film class right now. I call Louis. "Hey," he says when he picks up. "Hey," I say. "Are you busy?" I hear a muffled voice in the background, then Louis saying, "Shut up! It's Ally!" The voices stop talking. Louis comes back on the phone. "Sorry. And no, I'm not busy. Why?" he says. "Can you pick me up?" I ask. "Yeah, sure," he agrees. I give him my address and he tells me he'll see me in fifteen minutes. I sit down on my couch to wait. I'm not sure who was in the background, but why would Louis have to say that he was on the phone with me for them to stop talking? I'm still confused when I hop into the passenger seat on Louis' car fifteen minutes later. "Why did you tell whoever you were with it was me you were on the phone with?" I ask as Louis pulls out of my driveway. He sighs. "Shit. You can't tell them I told you. It was supposed to be a surprise." I raise my eyebrows. "A surprise?" Louis sighs again. "Niall is out of the hospital. He was going to surprise you when you came back. Please act surprised." I shake my head. "Why am I not surprised that you're the one who gave it away?" I say, smiling. "Ha ha," Louis says. "But you're right, I'm horrible at surprises. Once we had a huge birthday party for Harry and I accidentally told him about it the day before it happened." I laugh. "You guys are so cute," I say. Louis blushes. "You're blushing!" I cry, pointing. "I am not," Louis says indignantly. "Whatever, Tommo," I reply. "Where's Niall?" I ask when Louis pulls into the parking lot. "Okay, I'm not spoiling two surprises in one day," he says. "Follow me." He leads me to Liam and Niall's cabin and flings open the door. "Umm," I say, stepping into the cabin. Louis pinches me. "Act like you don't know what's going on," he whispers. "Why are we here?" I ask in a monotone. "Louis told you, didn't he?" a familiar voice says. "Niall!" I exclaim. Niall appears from behind the bathroom door. "Thanks, Lou," Niall says, hugging me. Louis steps toward the door. "That's my cue to leave," he says. I laugh. "Don't blame him." When Louis is gone, Niall looks down at me. "I've been waiting to do this for a while," he says and pulls me closer to him. I look up into his blue eyes. "I love you," he says before kissing me.
"I don't have any proof, so you might not believe me and I understand that," I tell Officer Johnson. "But they did say they were meeting at my house tomorrow at 3." Officer Johnson nods and writes this down. "Tell me what you heard," he says. I tell him everything and when I', done, he says, "I want you to do what you did today. But tomorrow you'll have a recorder with you, and police will be waiting outside. I'll be with you inside." I nod and we go through the details of the plan. "I'll see you tomorrow then," Officer Johnson says and I walk out of his office. "Okay," I say. I'm so nervous already I feel like I might throw up.
When I pull up to my house at 2:55 exactly the next day, I see Zayn's car is already in the driveway. Perfect. I signal to the car across the street and Officer Johnson gets out along with a few other policemen. Officer Johnson and I quietly open the front door and sneak up the steps. "Don't step on the very top stair," I whisper. He nods in affirmation. I turn my recorder on. "I didn't get to talk to Ally at all today," Ansley says. "I couldn't find her. No one knew where she was." Officer Johnson had told me not to talk to Ansley because she's considered dangerous, so I told everyone to cover for me and say they didn't know where I was. "That's okay," Zayn says. "I don't think anyone suspects what we did." I hear a sigh, and then Ansley says, "I'm just worried they'll find out. I don't want to go to jail." Officer Johnson nods at me, and then he springs into action. He thunders up the last few steps and pushes the door of Ansley's room open. "Hands up in the air where I can see them," he bellows. Ansley whimpers. I stand behind Officer Johnson. A few other police rush into the house and up the stairs. "You're under arrest.." Officer Johnson recites. Ansley's eyes lock on mine as she's being handcuffed. She gasps. "You traitor," she spits. Zayn looks up too and sees me. His face is unreadable. As Ansley is dragged past me, she spits in my direction. "You're my sister," she says. "Yeah," I say right before she's led downstairs. "And I wish I wasn't."
