My phone buzzes from my nightstand and I reluctantly grab it. Seeing that it's Zayn, I feel relieved. We need to talk. "Hey," I say into my phone. "Hey Ally," Zayn says. I put my phone on speaker and settle back in my bed. "I'm glad you called, we need to talk about some stuff," I say cautiously. "Sure," he agrees amiably. "If we're going to...uh, do this," I say, blushing. I can't bring myself to say the word dating. I don't know exactly how I feel about Zayn yet. "I need to know why you sent those messages to me and did everything else along those lines." I take a deep breath, anticipating his response. From the other end, Zayn sighs. "It was all Kat. She told me if I didn't do what she said she would ruin me. And I believed her because Kat...well, let's just say she has a way of getting what she wants. She told me exactly what to say in those messages and what to say to you when I saw you. None of it was actually me. I swear. I do have feelings for you, Ally. Kat just made me do those things because she thought you would ditch Niall for me and then she could have him. Now that you left camp, she probably has already kissed Niall." I feel a pang in my chest hearing him say that. "Do you believe me?" Zayn asks. "I promise you I am telling the truth. I don't know what I can do to prove it to you." I do believe him. But I also believed Kat when she told me about Niall's summer flings. Just one thing isn't adding up. "But Niall didn't deny having a relationship every summer," I muse thoughtfully. "Why?" I pull at a stray thread on my comforter while I think. "He did usually date someone each summer," Zayn tells me. "But I don't think it was as bad as Kat made it out to be, you know?" I nod and then realize he can't see me. "I know," I reply. "So you believe me then?" Zayn says hopefully. "Yes, I believe you, and I know how you can prove yourself," I respond. "How?" he asks. "We can go back to camp and see how Kat is acting around Niall," I say. "But she can't know we're there..." Zayn agrees right away, saying, "Leave that to me." We plan to go back tomorrow in the morning so I can still have the afternoon with Ansley. "I'll pick you up around 8:30," Zayn says before hanging up. "Okay, see you then," I reply and hang up. The anticipation of what might happen tomorrow keeps me awake most of the night.
"Hey," Zayn greets me when I slide into the passenger seat of his car the next morning at exactly 8:30. "Hey," I reply, yawning. "You want to stop at Starbucks and get coffee?" he asks me, seeing me yawn. "Nah, we should probably get going," I say. "I'll have plenty of caffeine later." We reach Camp Lincoln in about twenty minutes. We carefully make our way to Niall's cabin, figuring that's probably where Kat would be. "I told everyone except Niall and Kat that we were coming," Zayn tells me. I nod. Outside of Niall's cabin, I stop dead in my tracks. "You okay?" Zayn asks, looking back at me. "Just worried what I might be about to see," I reply and nervously step forward. Zayn boosts me up so I can faintly see into the window. My breath hitches in my throat when I see Kat pressed up against the wall, kissing Niall. At that moment, Kat turns and sees me. She pushes Niall away and points. I jump out of Zayn's hands. "Run!" I squeal. We turn and sprint back toward the car. We roar out of the parking lot and drive a few streets over before Zayn pulls to the side of the road. We look at each other and burst out laughing. "Oh...my...God," I say, barely able to get the words out I'm laughing so hard. Zayn leans over to me and kisses me through my laughter. For some reason, I'm not sad about what I just witnessed. I'm just happy to be here with Zayn.
