The next day I wake up early, dress, grab my soccer ball, and head out to the fields. I warm up by running four laps around the field. Halfway through my final lap, I see a figure materialize in the distance. I finish running as Niall walks up. "I thought I'd find you here," Niall says, his eyes twinkling. "You were looking for me?" I reply, tightening my ponytail. He blushes. "Yeah, I guess so," he says. "No one else wakes up early. I didn't know if you did or not." I shrug. "Sleeping wastes time when I could be doing something productive. You have sailing later, right?" I add. "Yeah, at noon," Niall tells me. "Okay, me too," I say, happy Niall will be there too. "Be my sailing partner?" he asks. "Sure," I agree amiably, trying to sound nonchalant. Inside though, I'm hoping I won't be completely horrible at sailing. "So you've done sailing before?" I say. "Yeah, for two years," Niall says. "An experienced partner," I reply, smiling. "That's probably good considering I've never sailed before in my life." Niall nudges the soccer ball laying at my feet. "Wanna play?" In response, I kick the ball away from him and dribble it down the field where I swiftly kick it into the goal. Niall holds up his hands in mock surrender. "I can see you're better than me already." I look down, flustered. "You can't be that bad." Niall takes the ball, backs up, and then passes it to me. "See? I'm pretty bad," he replies when the ball goes wide. "With me teaching you, by the end of the summer you'll be a pro," I joke. "I have some doubts about that," Niall tells me. "But I guess we'll see." We practice for another half hour or so until Lacey and Emma run up and tell us that everyone's going to breakfast. "We'll be right there," Niall promises. Together, we walk toward the dining hall. "How long have you been playing soccer? You're really good," Niall says as we walk. "Next year will be my ninth year. I've been playing since fourth grade," I respond. "Wow," he replies. "That's a long time." I nod. "Yeah." When we reach the dining hall, a couple of boys call out to Niall. "Tell everyone I'll be right in," he tells me. I nod and locate Emma. Once seated, Liam pokes me. "Hey, Ally, guess what?" I turn to him. "What?" He grins. "Niall likes you," he says. His eyes fix on something in the distance. "There he is now. You should talk to him about it." I blush and look down at my plate. Niall slides into the seat across from me. "Hey guys," he says, oblivious to what Liam just told me. "Oh hey, Niall," Liam greets him. "We were just talking about how you have a crush on Ally." Niall glares at Liam. "Should we talk about how you have a crush on Lacey now too?" Lacey looks up from her conversation with Kat and Zayn. "What? I heard my name," she says. "Liam has a crush on you," Niall offers. Lacey turns to Liam for confirmation, who in turn shrugs and says, "I'm not gonna deny it." Lacey smiles a little. "Liam, can we talk after breakfast?" Liam nods. "Yeah, sure." Niall looks at me again. "Can we talk after breakfast?" I play with my ponytail. "Yeah. Actually I'm done now." We both stand and walk to the side of the dining hall where there's a bench. We sit, and I say, "Do you like me?" Niall scuffs his shoe against the dirt. "Yeah. I'm sorry if that makes things super awkward between us now. That's not what I wanted to accomplish. If you don't want to be my sailing partner now, that's fine. I understand." I shake my head. "No, no, this hasn't made anything awkward between us. And I still want to be your partner for sailing. I...I like you too, I just, I don't know. We just met, so I feel like I want to wait a little before we, yah know, date or anything." Niall smiles, looking hopeful. "I can respect that." Later, on the lake with Niall, I realize I haven't called Ansley at all. "Shoot," I mumble. "What's wrong?" says Niall worriedly. "I forgot to call my sister, and I told her I would. I'll just have to remember to do it after we're done." Unexpectedly, Niall leans in and kisses me. When he pulls back, he apologizes profusely. "It's okay," I keep repeating but he doesn't seem to believe me. When we're back on shore, Niall mutters something about meeting friends and that he'll see me later, and he hurries off. Is it bad that I enjoyed the kiss?
