I nervously unpack my things, careful to only use half of the hangers they provide us with. My roommate hasn't arrived yet, and I'm hoping she's nice. The door flies open, and it reveals two girls standing there, one with blonde hair, one with black. The blonde says, "I'm Emma! I'm your roommate! This is Lacey." I smile at them both. "I'm Ally," I reply happily. She seems nice enough. Lacey greets me too, and then Emma says, "Are you coming to the dining hall? They're serving lunch. You can come with me and Emma and meet some other people too." I nod, considering this. "Sure, okay." I follow Emma and Lacey out the door and across the grass. "How do you know where you're going?" I ask them when the cabins have disappeared from view. Emma giggles. "This is my fourth year here. Same with Lacey, and same with everyone you're about to meet." I stifle a groan. If everyone has known each other for years, how will I be accepted into the group? When we reach the dining hall, there are 5 boys and 2 girls waiting for us. The girls introduce themselves as Kat and Aubree, and the boys in turn say their names are Liam, Zayn, Harry, Louis, and Niall. They all start chattering about something that happened at camp last year, and I grimace. If this is how it's gonna be all summer, I might as well leave now. Then Niall sits next to me at the table and smiles at me kindly. "So this is your first year here, huh?" I nod, a little embarrassed by the attention. "Yeah. I've never been to camp before." If he's surprised by my answer, he doesn't show it. "What classes are you doing?" he asks me. I think back to the papers I filled out with my parents. "Sailing, tennis, film, and photography," I reply after a moment's hesitation. "I have sailing and photography too," Niall tells me. I smile. "Good. I was worried I wouldn't know anyone in my classes." Kat, hearing our conversation, agrees. "That's how I was my first two years. But now I know a lot of the people here, and soon you will too. I take tennis, so we'll be in that together." I feel relieved, no longer worried about the classes. "Can I go out to the soccer fields any time I want?" I ask Niall and Kat. They both nod. "Yeah," Niall says. "Hey, you play soccer? So does Louis. He'll be thrilled to find someone who understands it like he does." Without a pause, Niall calls Louis' name. Louis turns around. "Yeah, Niall?" Niall points at me. "Ally here plays soccer." Louis grins. "Cool! Want to play after lunch? The soccer fields aren't too far from here." I nod, and say, "Yeah, sure!" We turn back to our lunches. "So, Ally, where are you from?" Aubree asks. "Chesterfield," I say. "Hey, I used to live there," Liam replies. "Guys!" Lacey squeals, interrupting us. "Look over there! Devon is back!" Emma flushes a bright pink and turns her face to the table. Harry pokes Emma. "Ready to rekindle the flame?" Emma buries her face in her hands. "There was no flame!" Zayn explains to me that last summer Emma and Devon had a fling. I nod. That's what I had guessed. After lunch, Louis nods at me. "Ready?" I stand up too. "Yeah. Let's go." Niall follows us out and around the dining hall to the soccer fields. There are soccer balls laying on the deserted field so I take one and kick it to Louis. "I'll be back," Niall says. Louis and I nod and keep playing. A few minutes later Niall is back with a guitar. He sits down on the sideline and starts softly playing and singing along. Louis joins in, and I'm stunned at their voices. They're both amazing singers. Eventually, I gather up the nerve and sing under my breath with them. "You're really good," Nialls tells me. I blush and look down. "Thanks. I don't usually sing around people...so that was different for me." Niall smiles. "You don't have to be shy around us, Ally. Really." Louis reaches into his pocket, pulls out his phone, and reads something on the screen. "Sorry Ally, but I forgot I promised Harry a swim. We should play again sometime, though." He runs off toward the lake, which I can see shimmering in the distance. "On Saturdays, we have karaoke, and I think we should do a duet together," Niall says bluntly. I look at him, startled. "You don't have to if you don't want to," he hurries, looking ashamed. I take a deep breath. You can do it, Ally. "I'd love to," I tell him. "What song do you want to sing?" Niall shrugs. "I don't really care. Do you?" I shake my head. Emma runs up, breathless. "Guys! Hurry up! We have to start planning our pranks for this year!" Niall looks at me. "We can figure it out later." Then we run after Emma. I was going to try and avoid boys this summer, but with Niall being around, it doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
