42. It's Not Me
I struggle to loosen Kat's grip on my neck. "You mess around with my friends, and you pay," she hisses angrily. She removes her hand from my throat. "What do you mean...mess with your friends?" I sputter, still gasping for air. "You know exactly what I mean," she says nonchalantly. "First you steal Niall, then Zayn." I prop myself up on my elbows. "I didn't know you liked Zayn, too," I say truthfully. "Well, I don't," Kat tells me in a duh tone. "But if I can't date Niall, then I'll settle for Zayn." Kat's words make me want to throw up. "That's terrible," I say. Kat shrugs. "Maybe so. But if you didn't take Niall in the first place, I wouldn't have to settle for Zayn." I shake my head in disgust. "But that won't be the problem anymore," Kat says, grinning. She really is going to kill me. She pulls out the knife she was going to kill me with earlier, and tests it on the tip of her finger. A small drop of blood dots the edge. "Now Niall will be all mine," she says, flourishing the knife in the air. She pauses. "Unless of course, he dies," she adds. "You're disgusting," I spit at her. "Says the boyfriend stealer," she replies tartly. I decide this is as good a time as any to try and run. I bolt up and sprint to the door. Why isn't it opening? The knob feels jammed, but with what? I'm about to turn to the window, but Kat blocks my way. "Going somewhere?" she asks. I jerk my knee up and hit her in the stomach. She groans and backs a few steps away. I whirl around and start to unlatch the window. Once it's unlatched, I start to slide it up. I sneak a quick glance behind me to see if Kat is coming near me. To my surprise, she's still doubled over in pain. I jump and wiggle out the small opening until I land on the ground. The wind is knocked out of me temporarily. When I can breathe right again, I jump up and run to Liam's cabin because it's the closest. I pound on the door until he opens it, wearing shorts and nothing else. "Ally, are you okay? What happened?" Liam says immediately. Lacey appears behind him. "Kat was in my cabin and she...tried to kill me again," I say quickly. "Again?" Lacey says. I explain what happened earlier. "Is she still there?" Liam asks. I shrug. "I don't know. I just ran." Liam nods. "Let's go see if she's still there." We start off to my cabin. "Sorry to wake you up in the middle of the night," I tell them. "No problem," Lacey replies, smiling at me. "There's Kat!" Liam exclaims, pointing. All three of us run after her. I'm the first one to reach her and Liam is close behind. Kat slows down and looks at us. "Stop trying, Kat. You're going to jail. You tried to kill me more than once," I tell her, putting my hands on my hips. She takes a deep breath. "I'm not the one behind all of this," she says slowly. I roll my eyes. "I'm done with your lies, Kat. Of course you are." She shakes her head. "No. It's not me. It's Ava."
