Later that night, we're all sitting huddled around a small fire near the lake. "Hey Emma, you better watch out," Louis says. "The lake monster might come and get you!" Emma shakes her head, but she's smiling. "You sure that's not just Devon?" Aubree quips. Everyone laughs except for Emma. "That was last summer, guys. Chill." The serious look on Emma's face quiets our laughter. "Speaking of relationships, how are you and Brandon?" Zayn asks Aubree. Even in the darkness, Aubree visibly blushes. "We're fine." Niall elbows me. "Have you thought about a song to sing on Saturday?" I bite my lip and shake my head. "Crap. No, I actually completely forgot. Sorry." Niall shrugs. "No, don't worry about it. But I was thinking we could sing Forever Young." I smile. "Yes! I love that song!" Niall smiles too. "Hey, Ally," says Liam. "Yeah?" I reply. "We have something to tell you, something we just thought you know if you're going to hang out with us this summer." Harry takes over. "Me and Louis are, um, together. We just wanted to make sure that didn't make you uncomfortable or not want to talk to us or whatever." I shake my head emphatically. "No, I'm fine with it. I would never not talk to you because of something like that." Soon enough, Kat, Zayn, Liam, and Aubree have gone to bed. "Time to prank," Emma whispers to me. "Already?" I ask, surprised. "Won't they wake up?" Emma shrugs. "Probably not. Kat and Aubree are rooming together and they both sleep like the dead." She pulls rolls of toilet paper out of her bag. "The oldest trick in the book," she tells me. "But we do it to someone every year." Harry stands up. "I'm coming with you guys." Emma nods and gestures toward the cabins. "Let's go." Louis, Harry, Niall, Lacey and I all tiptoe after Emma through the grass. Suddenly, Emma stops. "This is their cabin," she whispers. We all grab toilet paper and set about covering the cabin in it. It only takes us a few minutes, and then we hear someone moving inside. Lacey gasps. "Run! To the lake!" We all take off sprinting, hoping we didn't just get caught. Niall and I fall breathless onto the dock a moment later. "We should go swimming," he suggests. "The water usually isn't that cold." I must grimace or something, because Niall quickly says, "We don't have to." I look down over the dock at the water below. "No, I want to, I just...how deep is it?" Niall considers this. "I'm not sure. Not too deep. Why? Can't you swim?" Oh, great. Now he thinks I can't swim. "I can swim, I just don't like deep water that much," I reply. "Oh," Niall says. "We won't go out far. Please?" He stands and holds out his hand. I take it and he pulls me up. "We'll jump together," he tells me. "What is this, the Titanic?" I joke but I nod in agreement. "1...2...3!" Niall shouts and we plummet into the murky water. When my head slices through the surface of the water, Niall is grinning at me. "Maybe it is cold." I shiver. "Just a little..." Niall looks concerned for my well being. "Should we get out?" A loud crack of thunder startles us. "Maybe we should," I say, looking up at the sky. Rain begins to fall on my upturned face. Niall grabs my hand and leads me out onto the small stretch of sand. Thunder rumbles again in the distance, and we start to hurry toward the cabins once more. Niall drops me off at my cabin first and says goodnight. "Goodnight, Niall," I reply. "I had fun today." He nods. "Me too, Ally. Goodnight." I've been in bed about ten minutes when Emma walks in. "Where were you?" we say I unison. Emma laughs. "Everyone stayed behind once you and Niall left. I think he likes you." I blush. "He just met me." Emma winks at me. "Maybe so, but that won't stop him." Even once Emma is asleep, I can't help thinking about what she said. Does he like me? Do I like him? Eventually I fall asleep, these thoughts turning over and over in my head like a washing machine.
